Abhas Suman- Music Producer

Abhas Suman is a young music producer that started from a very young age. The young entrepreneur released his first ever song when he was only 17 which was a huge hit. The young independent music producer is very successful and has released songs to the Netherlands radio station Sound Wave. As a young lad, he was very curious how music artists made music without any real instruments so he started his own gig. There over 200+ projects on his computer that were a wide range of beats. He believed that as an artist 30% of your work was talent and 70% of your work was advertising and being discovered. He knew that he needed to get his work acknowledged so he started sending tracks to other companies.

Suman starts his days by responding to emails that are urgent and listening to calming music. He stresses the importance of recording ideas and thoughts. Sometimes a good beat hits him in the middle of the night and he has to record them in his paper. The excitement of his passion is growing because people in India went from not knowing what the internet was to being on the internet all the time and discovering new things. This has greatly impacted his mission to get his name known and out there. The main goal of his is to become very well-known around the world and not just in his home country. Suman says it is very important to set goals and keeps a list of what he wants to accomplish everyday. Because the music industry is everchanging, Suman is always looking for new beats, styles and lyrics that can connect to people all around the world but can influence people to think.

When I think about music and the true skills of being a true entrepreneur, Travis Scott comes to mind. He is in a category of of his own when it comes to creativity and pure music development. He has amassed a following of over 22 million people and has an overall net worth of 70 million. He is a lyrical genius and no one can compete with him. He single handle produced Owl Pharaoh putting him in the mix with other artists like Kanye West. This was followed by his second mixtape, Days Before Rodeo. Which was one of his most successful mixtapes, reached the top 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. This put him at the top of his competition where he remains, he will continue to make more fire mixtapes in the future.

Daniel Ek: Spotify

Daniel Ek is the founder of Spotify, the music streaming service that revolutionized the music industry and how we listen to music. Ek was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1983. When he was just 13 years old, he began his own business where he created websites for businesses in his school computer lab. He recruited fellow students to help him. By the time he was eighteen years old, he was making $50,000 per month and managing a team of 25 people. Ever since Ek has continued to be innovative in creating content. After he sold his online advertising company, he partnered with Martin Lorentzon to create Spotify.

Ek wanted to make a music listening service that allowed users to listen to music for free, without having to pay for downloads. At the time, the biggest contenders in the music industry were downloadable music platforms like iTunes. However, behind the scenes, the problem of piracy in the music was a big one, and it was one Ek believed that his platform could tackle. Since most options for downloading music were expensive, users had to pay per-song or album to download, so, people flocked to illegal music downloading sites so they could own songs for free. Rather than regarding this as a problem for the law to deal with, Ek realized the problem was because of a larger problem in the music industry. If he could create a music listening service that was better than pirated music, people wouldn’t want to download music illegally.

With Spotify, listeners could stream music for free, with occasional advertisements. If listeners preferred to listen to music without ads, they could pay for the premium service, which ranges from $5 to $15 dollars a month depending on the plan.

Investors, however, did not see it as likely that Spotify could succeed in the music industry. Some thought a streaming service wouldn’t generate as much revenue as downloadable music platforms, such as iTunes, where users have to pay per download. Ek launched Spotify in 2008, and the program now has more than 70 million premium subscribers worldwide and has a market value of $26.5 billion. Spotify has had so much of an impact, that it pushed Apple to branch off of iTunes and launch their own streaming service, Apple Music. Spotify has changed the way people listen to music and Ek’s company is proof that entrepreneurs really can change the way people see an industry.

The Quick Rise of Martin Garrix

Martijn Garritsen, better known by his stage name Martin Garrix, has revolutionized the music industry in recent years, specifically the ways in which artists market themselves. In a period of three short years, Garrix went from an unknown DJ and producer to the #1 DJ in the world and a global icon.

Garrix’ career took off in 2013 when he released the club hit “Animals,” a single that jumped to the top of many dance and pop charts in Europe and America. Receiving over one billion views on YouTube to date, this track opened many doors in Garrix’ career, enabling him to work with major artists such as Ed Sheeran, Usher, Avicii, Khalid, and others. Propelling himself into the spotlight at the young age of seventeen allowed Garrix to market himself based on his youth in addition to the strength of his new collaborations. Furthermore, working with mainstream artists created more exposure than Garrix would have gotten from solely doing his live shows.

As he became more popular, Garrix began changing his style to incorporate more elements from pop music, broadening his audience in the process. He started his own record label – STMPD Records – just last year, the mission of the label being to help up and coming artists get their music heard. With a new record label, promised collaborations with more global artists, and his position secure at the top of DJ rankings across the world, Garrix shows no signs of slowing down. In bringing about change in the ways record labels market their younger artists and get them exposure, Martin Garrix transformed the music industry while simultaneously bringing dance music into the mainstream. These effects can be seen in recent years as younger artists are commonly receiving opportunities to collaborate with bigger artists because of the ways in which their management chooses to market their talents. Garrix’ raw talent and business savvy created the perfect storm as he experienced one of the quickest surges in popularity that the music world has ever seen.

A “Seven Nation Army” Could not Hold Jack White Back

Jack White, famous for being the lead singer of the White Stripes, still impacts the world with his music and brilliant mind. Despite the early 2000’s band breaking up, Jack White continues to crank out his own solo albums, one of which he released this year and climbed to the top of the US 200 Billboard. With deep, often strange lyrics, and screeching, distorted guitar melodies, Jack White tops his performances off with color coordinated clothes, instruments, and lights. Along with producing his own albums, he opened up Third Man Records in 2009, a combination of a record store, studio, and concert venue. After opening up another branch of Third Man in Detroit in 2015, White felt inspired to extend it into a large vinyl-pressing factory in 2017 called Third Man Pressing, making it the only place where records can be made-to-order. Ben Blackwell, co-founder of Third Man Pressing and nephew of Jack White, says that “For Detroit to continue moving forward, you need to have different ideas. [Manufacturing] is a field that’s driven by creativity. That’s something this city has always been flush with.”

Jack White, while often considered an acquired taste, is one of the most creative and innovative musicians of this decade.  Not only does he have a creative mind, but also a business-like one. Throughout White’s career, he has faced many struggles and criticisms, but he still held his head up high and worked his way to fame. “There are many people out there who will tell you that you can’t,” White says,”What you’ve got to do is turn around and say, ‘Watch me.'” Jack White’s passion is to turn music back into the raw, emotion-filled expression that it used to be, and no one can get in-between an inspired man and his dream. White not only revolutionized the rock n’ roll industry, but he also demonstrated the flexibility of the title of ‘entrepreneur’. Jack White is a living example of where creativity, hard work, and talent can take a person.

The Innovation Of Music Through Spotify

Spotify is a music listening app that has transformed the world.

Spotify was created by, 31 year old Daniel Ek, as an application to allow the user to listen to any music and create playlists without paying anything. The way Spotify makes money is through advertisements in between songs.

Originally, Spotify started out solely on computers. In 2013, things changed, Spotify launched an app to allow smart phone users to also stream music. In 2013, Spotify had 24 million active users that streamed over 4.5 billion hours of music. This completely transformed the consumers experience in the music downloading industry but has reduced the profits of artists around the world, because nobody has to buy the songs anymore.

I believe Spotify is in trouble the next several months because of the growing number of artists pulling their albums off of Spotify. For instance 2 weeks ago, Taylor Swift, pulled all of her songs from Spotify to increase her profits by having fans pay full price for the new album, 1989, which just came out. Swift made a smart move, but it could start a movement by artists around the world to remove their songs from Spotify and all other free music listening applications.

Daniel Ek, founded his first company when he was only 14 years old. He has the drive of an entrepreneur to do whatever it takes to succeed. He is currently worth $400 million dollars and is making a significant difference around the world through the evolution of streaming music.

In entrepreneurship, your age doesn’t matter, your drive for success is what will carry you farther than ever before.
