Joe Gebbia was living in an apartment in San Francisco was struggling for some extra cash. It dawned upon him to rent out a bed in his apartment to people looking for a place to stay at a much lower rate than traditional hotels and get to explore the country with without breaking the bank. He and his friend, Brian Chesky, thought they may have stumbled onto something and wanted to explore the possibilities on a bigger scale. Thus Airrbnb was formed; a company that uses regular everyday people’s homes to create amazing experiences and opportunities to explore the world. People can rent out a bed, room, or even an entire house if they wanted to for a short period of time or even for a year.
The company has become traveler’s best friend while on a budget. Who wouldn’t want to stay in a rustic little cottage in Ireland next to a sheep farm? You can even stay in a castle if you want! A
CASTLE! Now, seven years later, there are over 1,500,000 listings in over 190 countries. Joe has spoken globally about both entrepreneurship and design, and received numerous distinctions such as the Inc. 30 under 30 and Fortune 4 0 under 40. Airbnb is a great example of taking an idea that has been around for a while and turning it into something novel and new. Airbnb has reinvented the idea of traveling.
