Prior to being the CEO of Airbnb, Brian Chesky was just an average human living in San Francisco and struggling to pay his rent. Although his company is now worth $3 million he still lives in the same apartment. For those who don’t know what Airbnb is, its quite simple. Airbnb is just a simple service that lets people rent out their homes to others who are coming in town. Brian loves it because he believes its a great way to meet others. The idea all started when Brian and and his roommate Joe Gebbia saw the problem of not being able to sell their rent. They heard there was a design conference in the area and all hotels were booked so they decided to create a website (airbedandbreakfast.com) and rent there living room people to people for $80 a night and they would cook them breakfast. Soon after they both realized that this had to be something everybody could do and they began to create their business. This shows a great example of two regular guys living day to day and seeing a problem and thinking of ways to fix it. Not only did they help themselves, they also helped others with the idea. Those who struggle to pay rent now have a great way of earning a little extra cash. Although it took them a while to fund their company, they did it in creative ways and did not give up. Many might believe this is a very risky business in letting strangers stay in your house. However, because of past vandalism, they now offer $1 million in insurance and even have customer service agents available 24/7 to help if need be. The growth of the company is substantial, who knows where it could go next.
Thanks for the post Jeff. Really a cool thing to invent especially for people who are looking to travel but not wanting to deal with the hassle of finding a hotel. It is also genius because then people can rent out their extra space to make more money! Truly a great business that was sparked by the entrepreneurial mind.
Airbnb is a cool idea. Brian did a great job of finding a problem and solving it with something he is passionate about. It’s also cool that he gets to know so many people through it, and show hospitality to them. You and Drew could start doing this for your room. Maybe even the whole Beta hall! It could be the next step for Brian’s business. You would have to come up with an innovative way to make breakfast though.
