At the age of 14, Fraser Doherty started using his grandmother’s jam recipes to make natural preserves for himself, and also to sell to the local farmers market. Fast forward to the age of 20 and his business, Superjam, is now making roughly 3 million dollars in revenue a year. It’s quite amazing to see that all of this success can come from perhaps one of the most antiquated process out there – ie. jam making. Perhaps the primary reason for Doherty’s success however is the differentiation which has product has from the multitudes of other preserves out on the market. Fraser only makes his jams from 100% fruit, something refreshing considering most competitors’ jams are composed of 50% sugar. So initially, consumers valued the taste, and health conscious side of Fraser’s product, yet his marketing skills took him from a mom and pop type business, to the young mogul that he is today.
In fact, Fraser Doherty has earned exactly 22 prestigious entrepreneurial awards, and at the ripe old age of 24 he is the resident entrepreneur at London Metropolitan University. Essentially, he gives lectures and helps teach other aspiring entrepreneurs some of the necessary steps to take in order to give yourself a chance to make a profit in the open market. Finally, he has released both a cookbook with all his jam recipes, and a book on business; both of which are bestsellers. Clearly, this young entrepreneur has found some model of attaining success, and he revitalized the ancient practice of jam making, showing the entrepreneurial spirit applies to both things created and not yet imagined.

This product is a great example of innovation in a product that has already gone through so many innovations. Fraser took things back to the beginning and made his jam with 100 real fruit rather than highly processed jams that there are now.
This is a Great way to show how the Food market is changing people are pushing for all natural and organic over processed ingredients. It also shows that you do not need to look far for innovation, you can find it right at your Grandma’s house!
