After getting sick of his sister only selling “girly” scented candles at a school fundraiser, 14-year-old Hart Main came up with the idea of selling only “manly” scented candles with hopes of changing up the candle industry. He succeeded after receiving an initial investment of $300, and started developing candle scents aimed toward a more masculine consumer. These scents include campfire, sawdust, freshly cut grass, pipe smoke, and more. His business took off, and ManCans are currently being sold in over 60 stores across the country. He has sold over 9000 candles so far, and will continue to innovate and change the candle industry.
This is a really cool idea, and I definitely have seen Main’s products sold in some stores. It’s true that candles are mostly marketed to girls, so it is so impressive that he was able to find this gap in the candle industry at such a young age!
Its always cool to see someone bring innovation to an area that seems devoid of it. I mean how much innovation can one bring to the candle business. But he we see some great ingenuity.
Going off the other comments, I agree. How can you be innovative in the candle industry. Somehow Hart did by seeing that the marketing strategy was lopsided towards women. I think it’s pretty cool that someone can take a “sleepy” market and reinvigorate it.
Way to go Hart! Not many kids I know would have the drive to make their own business off of an annoyance. As Prof. Sweet always says “find the pain.” Pain is where the sale is!
That is is a great idea! There is already a market for candle buyers, however, he simply changed the target market towards men. Although just a simple pivot of an idea, this company shows the importance a simple change can be. Also surprised that such a young teen thought of this before another business like “Yankee Candle”.
