During the school year, one website always rises hugely in popularity among students.
A popular study tool, Quizlet has provided quality studying help to all levels of students. A website and app that allows teachers and students to study through use of flashcards and study sessions, Quizlet has gotten many through midterms and finals. Designed by a young entrepreneur with personal insight to a need, Quizlet was founded in 2005 by high school sophomore Andrew Sutherland. He designed it at first to help him study for his French vocabulary and after acing his test, shared it with his friends.
Andrew applied a little bit of the 0 to 1 method to his project which has been part of making Quizlet so successful. It took until 2007 to be released to the public but has since come to be realized as one of the first steps into education gamification. When he saw the impact Quizlet was having on students everywhere, Sutherland dropped out of MIT where he was pursuing a computer science degree to give more attention to his project.
A personality trait of entrepreneurs is willingness to pursue risk and take opportunity when it shows. After having taken a break from Quizlet to work on his education, Andrew fully committed to growing his business. A student designing with students in mind, his approach was correct from the first.
His care for his users and their platform has continued to grow. In addition to the base platform’s effectiveness, Sutherland did not stop there. “The most important thing that I realized during this process was how to treat my users. They’re Quizlet’s biggest asset.” With a business mind and courteous personality, he decided that interaction between user and owner would be part of what made Quizlet exceptional. Andrew Sutherland replies personally to each message, furthering the positive impact his company has on the world.
This was very interesting to read and learn more about considering that I have been using Quizlet since middle school! I think the fact that Andrew was a student himself solving a problem that other students had/have shows that he was super observant in his environment around him. I like how you discussed that an important part of being an entrepreneur is also being a risk-taker. Andrew definitely took a risk when he took a break from his education to focus on his business. I also really like that he learned to adapt and make Quizlet a platform that paid close attention to user experience and interaction.
Wow this is incredible!! I have just been thinking lately about how successful and helpful quizlet is and this is so inspiring to hear that it was created by a high schooler!! Also, that’s so interesting that he decided to drop out of MIT to focus on it. I wonder if he thinks that was worth it? I’ve noticed that other successful people in history sometimes drop out of college to pursue something important, but if it were me I could never be so audacious. This is such a good story; thanks for sharing!
Quizlet is the only reason I am able to pass half of my classes! The app and website are fantastic! It is so interesting to read the story and read that the creator dropped out of MIT. I think it is important to remember that some entrepreneurs make sacrifices to create their dream or work on their project.
No wonder Quizlet is so effective, it was created by a high schooler who understood the pains of studying! I never realized this before, but now I can tell that he understood this educational problem well enough to create a better solution than others who were trying to understand students’ pain from other perspectives.
As a user and lover of quizlet myself, I found this to be an interesting article! I am also very thankful that this entrepreneur thought of this idea. It is extremely useful and has made studying so much easier and effective!
I think that it’s so respectable that this widely used resource was created by someone at such a young age! It does make sense that it would work so well for students, because it was created by one. Andrew also is living proof that college doesn’t immediately cause success, because he achieved it even after he dropped out of MIT. I personally use Quizlet for every exam I have, and am extremely grateful for this innovation.
