When looking at the world of online dating, lots of apps come to mind such as Tinder, Zoosk, and Eharmony, but none are like the new app named Bumble, which allows Women to make the first move in a relationship. When looking at how Bumble started, this is a very unique story indeed. Whitney Wolfe Heard, the inventor of Bumble, first started in college by finding a project named “Help Us” which aided areas that were affected by the BP oil spill. How she raised money for this project was by selling Bamboo bags which reached much coverage from celebrities’ and many other famous businesses. After this successful project took off, Whitney then expanded into launching Tinder which now is a very prominent and successful dating app that allows single people to find the right person for them. After being vice president of marketing at Tinder for some time, Whitney then moved into finding Bumble which allows Women to make the first move in the relationship and ultimately creates gender equality. Whitney really has made a successful company which is estimated at one billion dollars and 360 million registered users.
What is unique about this Whitney Wolfe Heard is her ability to never settle for less. After creating the Help Us project and launching Tinder, she could have stopped there and settled but she didn’t. She innovated the online dating world by letting women take the reigns in the relationships. What drives Whitney as an entrepreneur is equality. When looking at her story, Whitney really didn’t like the fact that women weren’t equal with men in the online dating world and she saw a chance to innovate that and make it successful. She ultimately took a simple idea and created lots of meaning behind it. What makes Whitney’s business idea most interesting is simply thinking outside the box. Online dating has already been accomplished, but never has gender equality been incorporated into the mix like Whitney did with her app. Vision, passion, innovative, Resilient, and Persistent are all examples of entrepreneurial traits that Whitney exemplifies throughout her business venture. The way Whitney is innovating is simply by incorporating gender equality into the world of online dating. Whitney is so inspiring to me because she ultimately teaches every entrepreneur and businessperson not to think in their own corner or not to stay in their own little space even if an idea has been invented. Finally some principles I have learned from Whiteny would be to never settle for less or never stop striving. After Tinder, Whitney could have been done with inviting and innovating but she didn’t stop there. She ultimately created something great and amazing.
I like how resourceful Whitney Wolfe was, as she had to sell bamboo bags. You can clearly see how driven Wolfe is when it comes to dating sites and equality. Wolfe did a nice job of innovating an idea that has already been done so many different ways; Wolfe turned the online dating idea on its side and made it her own. I learned a lot from all of Wolfe’s accomplishments for example, never settle, persist through problems, and so many others. Well written, nice job.
It is interesting that she is going into a very crowded red ocean, not a blue ocean. However, even though it is a crowded market and I have never visited a dating website or app, I have heard of this through advertising. Creating new ideas in a crowded market is perhaps more impressive than entering a blue ocean.
I appreciate Whitney Wolfe Heard’s drive. It’s inspiring to look and see strong women who broke into a predominantly male business, turning the whole thing on its head. Whitney created something that would empower other women in an industry that has always fostered sexism, which is a win for women across the board.
