When i think of college students my mind is immediately fixed on the crippling student loan debt that comes along with the education. That is where Ryan Cypher had the entrepreneurial idea to use college as a tool to get work. So he started the landscaping “The College Yard Guys.” He started this company with the idea in mind that people would be more willing to pay college students to do their yard work, and help them pay for their education, rather than pay professionals. The College Yard Guys are fully equipped and have experience in many areas of outdoor yard work. They are capable of mulching, edging, moving heavy landscape rocks, planting, trimming bushes and trees, and mowing. Ryan was right in his hypothesis that people would be more willing to pay college students despite the lack of proper experience. This lead to them always having plenty of business and helped pay off some of the steep cost of college. College yard guys continues business even after its founder has graduated college. Now heading up the company is Ryan’s younger brother, Jeffrey Cypher. This has given their community a good cause to put their money towards while also getting landscaping work done in return.
This is a great concept. It is a perfect example of how the perception of a product or service is much more important than the product/service itself. Even though these laborers don’t have as much experience as professional landscapers, their portrayal of services is much more valuable.
I can attest to people wanting to help out college students by having them help with yard work; last weekend a group I’m involved with on campus did yard work for professors and we were very successful in terms of donations.
There is definitely something unique and fun about the idea, and I think homeowners like helping out young kids. The business creates more a personal connection with clients, more so than professional landscaping business probably do.
This story is really familiar to me because in High School I had a landscaping business called College Bound Lawn Services. Just like College Yard Guys, people in my area were willing to hire me over other professionals because I was saving for college. This shows that if you can tie a benefit people are willing to support to your business, your business will thrive and do well.
This is cool how they differentiated themselves as college students, using that for their advantage. People seem more likely to participate in things when they think they are doing something good and helpful. Therefore, it makes sense that people are more willing to pay for this business because they feel like they are doing good.
This company is decent, I could think of better, but I guess the idea behind it is pretty good and they have proven their concept
This company sounds like a great idea honestly. I am unsure of the current state of leadership of the company as I feel that Jeffery Cypher will run the company into the ground. But perhaps I am wrong, but I’m not usually wrong.
