David Karp is a 37 year old American Entrepreneur who started Tumblr. Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website. David Karp founded Tumblr is 2007. When David was 14, he dropped out of school and started working as an intern for an animation producer. When he was 17, he moved across the world to Japan to learn more about technology. While in Japan, he began working for a U.S. base company which helped him gain experience. Karp’s idea of Tumblr was great because it was created right when phones were becoming popular and it provided people with a place to take pictures and post them. It also allowed them to write blogs and so forth. Karp integrated many entrepreneurial principles into his business such as taking risks and being adventurous, being observant and fascinated, and figuring out that you don’t have to follow every rule. These principles that Karp incorporated into his business is the reason why he is so successful. When Karp was interviewed about Tumblr, he said that he sees Tumblr not as a network but as a product he’s designing. He continues to say “we’re striving towards perfection”. Karp is innovating even years after Tumblr launched because that’s what a good entrepreneur does, they innovate. Karp inspires me in my own thinking and innovation because I feel like in order for me to be successful with opening a business, I need to be more like Karp in the way that I put myself out there and that no matter what people say, good or bad about what your making, you just have to keep on grinding and it will work out in the end.
This is awesome! I think it’s so cool that he realized he liked technology so early on in his life and was able to pursue it by dropping out of school and moving to Japan. I think we can all learn from him that if we realize a niche or skill, we have we should pursue it because it could open a door!
This is a really cool story! I think it’s awesome that David Karp was able to be so successful despite dropping out of school. I also think it is very interesting that he went to Japan instead of Silicon Valley or a different country. He shows that you can succeed if you work hard and capitalize on opportunites.
