Ed Hardy and Kit Logan are prime examples of millennial entrepreneurs. At ages 16 and 17 they have created and developed a steady revenue stream based off of an app called “Edge.” This app is targeted towards skiers and snowboarders alike looking for what lift lines are busiest, how far and fast they are going, and the ability to compare speeds with others. This application is connected with Facebook and FourSquare, location based media tools, so skiers and snowboarders can connect with other users.
With this new technology, skiers and boarders can search which slopes are busiest, which lifts are backed up, and also what restaurants are locally available. Lift operators have said that this will aid them in being more efficient as they can use the GPS technology to track lift lines and slope traffic.
As an avid skier myself, I love the idea of being able to forecast which ski runs I should avoid while tracking my speeds and racing my brothers.
Hardy and Logan’s app has already launched in Apple’s app store and has attracted many investors, giving the company plenty of venture capital. Logan stated, “Once we have built enough users, the aim is to become the Waze of skiing.” These young entrepreneurs have clearly established themselves in the ski and snowboard market and are well on their way to entrepreneurial success.
This seems like an awesome app idea. An app that doesn’t suck up time or entertain, but enhances an experience. I don’t know much about skier problems, but lift wait time seems like it would be high up on the list of gripes. These two guys have truly seemed to solve a problem.
This sounds like a great app for a niche market! My only concern would be using the app with gloves on. I wonder if they could make it more voice-controlled so you didn’t have to take your gloves off every time?
This is a really great idea! I have being skiing and snowboarding my entire life and this is something I would use in a heartbeat. Currently, I look at web cams of the specific lifts on the website while skiing to find the shortest lines. This is a great business idea. Great post Hannah!
