Evan Spiegel, born on June 4, 1990, is the co-founder of Snapchat, and is among the wealthiest of young men in the United States. Snapchat was created in September of 2011, and is a mobile picture and video chat messaging application. Many users enjoy the app because it allows people to communicate and send pictures and videos to one another without filling up the storage of people’s devices, as the app deletes them automatically. The idea of Snapchat wasn’t anything new, but the execution was something that other companies had never explored before.
As stated before, Evan Spiegel has become one of the youngest billionaires in the United States, achieving a net worth of over two billion U.S. dollars. The reason Mr. Spiegel stood out to me is because of my belief that it only takes one good idea to become successful. The idea of Snapchat that Evan helped create wasn’t something incredibly ground-breaking, in fact, it was simply an augmentation of already existing messaging applications. It became successful because it found the issue of messaged pictures and videos taking up too much space, and fixed it with a simple to use application. This single idea not only changed the way people communicate with one another, but also allowed Mr. Spiegel to be able to comfortably retire on the massive success he helped create.
It’s interesting that the idea of snapchat wasn’t completely new when it was started, but that nobody had been able to successfully pull it off. I figured companies that had ideas similar to snapchat would’ve been able to execute the app easier, because they already had the money and resources to do it.
I would agree that the execution of snapchat was different. I think it was also released at the right time as well, since our world today is very photo/video oriented. I am interested to see though how snapchat will grow as many companies are starting to think about advertising on snapchat, or creating their own account to follow.
Snapchat was an incredible idea to start and the updates have revolutionized the idea. Snapchat started as mainly just picture messaging and has been turned into what i believe to be a “Social Media’ platform because of the stories, promoted stories, filters and advertisements. They were able to test the market with the idea and as the following grew they were able to think of ways to make a ton of money.
I think the idea of Snapchat is extremely interesting. It’s so true that the app was just a new adaptation and an easier way we had already been doing things in the past. But he had an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to make this a simple and easy process. Something that this teaches me is that people want things that make life easier. People could already send pictures to each other through messages, but that was time consuming and difficult as it took up storage. I like that he just took this idea and made a simpler process.
It is amazing how successful Snapchat has been over the past few years! I remember when it came out. The idea seemed simple, but it is truly innovative in the way it revolutionized how people send photos. I would not be surprised if Snapchat has changed how people communicate. For example, how much they text or call vs. snapping. I guess that is true innovation then.
I believe that what makes snapchat as successful as it is, is because how often they try and continue to grow and develop their product. People who have the app continuously find new ways to have fun with it because of the effort put in by the developers. It is an amazing product.
