After watching a Michael J. Fox Foundation video, Erin Smith began to wonder about Parkinson’s disease. She saw that the facial expressions of patients were different and thought that it could have some sort of medical significance. She did tons of research before finally creating FacePrint. FacePrint is a tool that can be used to diagnose or monitor Parkinson’s disease by using facial indicators. It only needs a webcam and a computer. It is inexpensive and can detect the disease within milliseconds. It has similar facial recognition to Facebook and snapchat. Erin once stated that FacePrint “Is the selfie that could save your life”. It is about 88% accurate and is continuously getting better with more improvements. FacePrint has been featured in large magazines like Fortune, NPR, and Forbes. She has also won several awards for her invention. Currently Erin is working with Michael J. Fox Foundation on a study and to continue research.
This is amazing. As someone who has been a big fan of Michael J Fox and really had my eyes opened to Parkinson’s Disease by watching his comedy show on NBC a few years back, this really is interesting and encouraging to me. Hopefully this young entrepreneur can turn this breakthrough into an even more helpful breakthrough for the Parkinson’s community.
This is a great post to read! I think that this idea is a great way to shed light onto Parkinson’s disease so that others can become familiar with it, along with prodiving those with this disease or prone to it, have a way to monitor it or diagnose it earlier. This creative entrepreneurial idea would hopefully become widely known soon, to provide more assistance to those who suffer from Parkinson’s.
