I decided to make my blog post a bit different this time, and focus not on entrepreneurs in America, but rather ones in other countries. After doing some research, I found a lot of upcoming entrepreneurs in Africa, specifically helping their own country. One that I found interesting was Senai Wolderufael from Ethiopia. At 28, she started a company called Feed Green Ethiopia, which produces and exports popular Ethiopian spices, like shiro, mitmita, korarima, and berbere. They also serve more well-known spices, like hot chili pepper and cloves. Wolderufael created the company to help the needs of Ethiopian diaspora in America and Europe (meaning Ethiopians who moved elsewhere and can no longer buy authentic Ethiopian spices), but has recently expanded to shipping within Africa as well. Interesting enough, the company only employs women. It’s headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.
I personally love hearing about the different companies that are outside of America, and how their businesses develop based on their own culture. Instead of getting your every day spices from the grocery store, maybe it would be fun to try some of these authentic Ethiopian spices!
Some of my friends love cooking foreign food, so I’m sure they would be very interested to hear about this! The foundation of providing spices from home is a very personal way to connect to the target audience. I can only imagine what it would be like to move to an entirely new culture/country, and it would be hard not having comfort food or the ability to make comfort food in a new place. I also like that they are employing women in a place where women need to be empowered!
Through my research, I have also found the increasing trend of entrepreneurship in Africa. There is so much potential there for businesses that we would never think of. Feed Green Ethiopia is a perfect example of this. It’s so inspiring to hear about new and growing enterprises like this one! Thanks for sharing!
