Gary Erickson was just another adrenaline junkie/hiker when one day he was an all day bike ride with one of his friends. Being on the trail in the mountains all day, he had to bring food. He had been eating some very unappetizing energy bars throughout the day and finally came to a conclusion when he put the fifth one back into his pocket. He said to his friend and himself that he could create a better energy bar. Over the next two months he experimented with recipe after recipe trying to determine which ones were good and which ones were not. Marketing his product and becoming extremely successful, he was offered 120 million dollars for the company. After much consideration, Gary saw that his company was worth more and he still loved it, so he decided not to sell. The moral of this testimony is that you will be truly happy if you get involved in the fields that you are interested in. Making a slight improvement upon an already existing product is one of the entrepreneurs strong suites, and Gary Erickson is an example of that.
It is very respectable of him to turn down that money and awesome that he believed in himself and his product like that.. im sure it was hard to do
Clif Bars are great! He made a difficult decision to turn down that much money, but his company is probably the better for it with such a passionate CEO. He certainly found a need and filled it – most energy bars are gross!
That’s an awesome story behind cliff bars. I eat them quite often but I never knew how or why they were created.
As a consumer of these bars its very nice to know the story behind them. its always cool to see companies not crack under the pressure of selling
Cliff bars are a great product! I’ve enjoyed eating them over the years after sporting events, and even during my hike in the Grand Canyon last summer. It’s even cooler to see how committed Gary was to his company and his idea that he didn’t sell out when it could have been very easy to do so!
Part of the history of the company is actually written on the cliff bar packaging itself which is great to help promote their company story. Because of that I’ve known part of the story but this is great further insight into the company!
