For a young teen a silly joke became a money making venture. Hart Main’s sister was selling candles as a fundraiser for school and he said that they smelled too girly. He then had the idea to create manly scented candles. His little snarky comment has turned in to a success. Main has flavors such as campfire, bacon, fresh cut grass, grandpa’s pipe, and more. He had an initial investment of 100 dollars and his parents invested 200 dollars. He now has sold 9,000 units and is in 60 stores around the nation. Main has decided to keep to his studies mostly due to the fact that he’s only 14. Maybe one day his idea for the ManCans’ will take off and be see in Walmarts. It’s so cool to see how these young teens can find ways to create small successful businesses.
It’s pretty humorous that such a small remark can grow into a successful venture. Especially at such a young age having that entrepreneurial mindset is great!
As someone who is currently experimenting in candlemaking, this article is so inspiring. I loved how he got his initial idea from his sister, but identified a problem and came up with a solution with his own twist on it. The initial investment he had is also parallel to the imaginary one we were granted in our first activity. It’s amazing how much he did with that.
He definitely has a market with my brother. We went on a Bed Bath and Beyond trip the last time I was home and I turned around to find him standing by the candle aisle and having the time of his life smelling every one. I think there is actually a large market for masculine candles that, until now, I have not heard of being tapped into.
This is a very interesting story. Innovation can start at any age and anywhere. What I like most about this idea are the names for candles. This young entrepreneur is willing to take risks with the candles that he produces. I would not initially except a bacon candle or a fresh grass candle to smell good, but he is willing to take the risk.
I found this story very interesting. I never would have guessed something like a fresh grass candle would sell, but he has proven that it can! It is pretty amazing that a silly joke could turn into such a successful company. It serves as a great reminder that we are never too young to make a difference, no matter how small it may be.
I really like this concept because it is inherently funny. When you think of young boys you don’t really associate them with good smells (maybe smelly socks and pizza rolls). This is a good example of finding a niche market and capitalizing on an oversight in an industry.
This is really awesome. A 14 year old kid taking a risk starting his own business is one of the great benefits about this county. His flavor bacon would be one which I would love to have. His simple idea will take him far so long as he keeps working hard.
