Jocie Hagan and her husband, Ethan, started their own business of renovating houses. It started just by helping friends with slightly more advanced small house projects, but as their name got around their project sizes grew just as well as their popularity. To capitalize off of their growing name, they started a blog/vlog which incorporated primarily how to’s about various around the house projects. They partnered with Home Depot, which got them discounts on the materials and furnishings that they use in all of their projects. They also had on their blog lists of what materials were necessary for all of their projects in addition to comparisons between similar materials and proper examples of when each is appropriate to use. Additionally, Jocie connected her crafting and artistic skills to this business, and they also posted how to’s for a wide variety of artsy projects and décor. She does everything from simple diy wall art to full room theme painting to cute art projects to do with kids. Jocie engages her daughters in the family business, which also helps to grow their name. This serves as the primary money maker for the couple to raise their family on, and they have big plans in store for the future of their business.
Home renovation is always a popular topic. Some people are interested in how to save money by improving their home on their own. Other people are looking to spend money on new décor ideas. If the family can become big enough on their vlog/blog then they can make a nice secondary income to the business.
One thing this generation lacks is the ability to skilled labor, like carpentry. As this generation progresses to living by themself maybe of they will relay on youtube videos when something needs to be fixed, so I think this business will continue to thrive for them. I am also interested to see society handles so many more kids going to college instead of doing skilled labor, like carpentry.
As someone who is passionate about home renovating and interior design, I admire this couple for using their innovative minds to create something big and impactful. I think this idea is an interesting combination of creativity and business. I also find it interesting that the couple used social media to advance their company further.
I think the idea that this business was built on a relationship really goes to show that entrepreneurship isn’t a solo adventure. Entrepreneurship should be collaborative and Jocie really proved that. Her and her husband created a connected and household name renovating business with just 2 people. I like how you showcased this story
