John Zimmer is the co founder of the ride sharing service Lyft. Zimmer started his company on his university campus at Cornell. He soon had 20% of the student population signed up and promoted it with guerilla marketing while wearing frog and beaver suits handing out flyers. Zimmer did not take a salary in the first 3 years of Lyft’s operation after quitting his job on Wall Street at Lehman Brothers. In 2014, Zimmer was recognized by Forbes as 30 under 30: Technology. He found his inspiration from a problem that he saw when he was driving home to upstate New York on his breaks from school. He wondered why there were empty seats around him! He then took that inspiration and blew it up and is now available to 95% of the American population.
Lyft is a innovative way to travel and get around especially when you do not have access to a car. It allows the connection of people who needs rides and people that have empty seats in their car. The drivers will get paid for their service and the riders receive a ride when they otherwise could not. This has transformed the way that rides work and definitely has cut into the taxi service.
I think that it is so neat that Lyft was able to start on the campus of Cornell. Zimmer believed in his business so much that he didn’t take a salary for three years. I love that when he experienced a problem, he came up with a way to solve it.
I could be wrong but I think taxi drivers have their own union, which as a classic Grove City College conservative, I’m pretty anti-unions. I love that Lyft has competitive prices compared to taxi services, and their vehicles are kept so clean. It’s so easy being able to track where your driver is and knowing what kind of vehicle they’re driving. Also great that Zimmerman didn’t take a salary for 3 years and used it to invest in his company.
