Nick D’Aloisio was only 15 years old when he began working on his app Summly. The app works by summarizing news content into just a few of the most important sentences, allowing news stories to be read quickly. It auto-updates once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Within the first week of release, Apple featured the application in its ‘New and Noteworthy Apps’ section. This caught the attention of billionaire Li Ka-Shing, who provided Nick with $300,000 in venture capital funding. With this new funding, Nick was able to assemble a team and greatly improve Summly. Once the app gathered 250,000 users it caught the attention of Yahoo. Yahoo then acquired Summly for a reported $30 million US dollars.
I know some people that use Summly on a regular basis, and they all say that it was a wonderful experience and would highly recommend it. It’s amazing to think that a 15 year old took this idea and made it into what it has become today.
Now with everyone saying they are so busy that they cannot keep up with current events. This app allows everyone to get the news they want/need in a compact amount of space and time. This app will be great up younger people looking to be involved but not spending all their time looking for sources.
