Philip Kimmey just finished his junior year of college when he decided to quit college and start his own business. Kimmey was never allowed to have a dog growing up, yet he has always had a deep love for them. His dream was to start his own company revolving around the idea of dog-walking/dog-sitting. So instead of getting a full-time job during the summer after his junior year, he started pursuing his dream of starting up this company. Rover.com became his website, which currently has around 200 employees working for it, and is worth almost $300 million. Kimmey recently acquired a big competitor, DogVacay, which has allowed massive company expansion for Rover. Currently, Rover.com is a website that you can enter in your information (location, dog type, what service you need), and it will supply you with what you need for your dog. Rover currently offers dog boarding, house sitting, drop-in visit, doggy day care, and dog walking services.
This a great idea and I love how practical it is. He didn’t create this insane product that changed the world, he created a product that helps the everyday person take care of their dog.
This is a great example of someone creating a business out of an innate desire/passion. This guy loved dogs and simply wanted to create a company revolving around something he loved. Props to him!
It is interesting that Kimmey took an approach to connect those who need a service performed and various vendors willing to exchange their service for money. It gets rid of the need to look up multiple places to get and compare a few separate tasks for your dog. Also very impressive that they acquired one of their largest competitors.
This idea makes it much easier for busy dog owners to find someone who can take care of their dog while they are away. This idea solves a huge need that almost every dog owner faces whenever they go somewhere that does not allow dogs. Kimmey is a very innovative entrepreneur.
This is a really cool idea, and it definitely took guts for him to drop out of college as a junior! Entrepreneurs must take risks, and he definitely took one at a young age. I’m so impressed by the massive success of his business, but it makes sense because it definitely meets a need for a huge audience. Also, I loved the pictures of dogs!
I find it very interesting how he made a business for dog care because he never was able to have a dog of his own. Some businesses are started for very interesting reasons. Kimmey realized he had a passion for working with dogs so he decided to create a business out of his passion, that is new and different.
