Seth Berkowitz is the creator of Insomnia Cookies, a bakery chain that offers freshly made cookie delivery. Seth founded this idea in 2003 while he was attending college at the University of Pennsylvania. He would bake cookies and bring them to other students late at night. After recognizing how popular this new concept was, Seth decided to expand his business.
In 2004, he opened his first retail store for Insomnia Cookies.
Today, Insomnia Cookies has over 100 stores across the United States. Most of these are located on college campuses. Seth Berkowitz has done an excellent job marketing his brand to this specific audience. They offer delivery from 10am to 3am, making Insomnia Cookies the perfect treat before class or during a late night study session.
Successful Insomnia Cookies stores are not only found at universities though. As the brand’s popularity grows, there is an increasing demand for everyday home deliveries and special event catering. Seth Berkowitz’s creativity allowed him to put a unique spin on the concept of a traditional bakery, which is what ultimately made Insomnia Cookies such a big hit among many different crowds.
Wow, what a great idea! He took something he loved to eat late at night and sold it to people around him, and now he has a huge business! I love that he specifically targeted college students, and has really figured out what it takes to be successful in that market. I wonder how he does the delivery, if he drives or walks or both. Awesome story though!
it is so neat how he turned just a nice little service he did for his friends into an incredibly successful business! It is also really neat to see how even though he started out just catering to students at one campus, he has been able to expand to more campuses, and now is broadening his market to people other than students and catered events. He is a great example of how to grow a business.
How interesting! I wonder if this entrepreneur has thought of expanding his food service to more than just cookies. Although cookies are usually a college favorite, if Seth decided to expand his menu to more than one type of tasty treat, he could attract many more customers.
I find it really interesting that he has become so successful in a market where there are already a ton of other huge competitors. Businesses all around the country make and sell delicious cookies, but the key with Seth is that he differentiated his product by making it available at a time when no other cookies are. I think that is an awesome idea, and it took keen observation to see what niche needed to be filled in the cookie market.
Seth had a really great idea. Seth saw an opportunity and a need and capitalized on it. Also, I’ve actually been to one of the Insomnia Cookies retail store in Kent, OH.
I’m a big fan of insomnia cookies. I just had it this past weekend. When you walk into the store you’re instantly hit by a fresh bakery type smell because when you order you get the freshest cookies. Seth was very innovative with his product and he will be successful for a long time.
Practical, useful, and genius! Definitely a business that students will take advantage of! Can we get one to GCC please???
As a cookie enthusiast, I can say that this idea is fantastic. Most people here at GCC order out pizza late at night but that doesn’t work for those of us who are lactose-intolerant. But fresh baked cookies?! Yes please! Thanks for sharing about this entrepreneur!
