SPIKEBALL
According to iddictive.com, Spikeball is a volleyball-like game where two teams of two compete to keep the ball in the air before spiking it off a circular trampoline like net on the ground. Originally marketed as a beach game, it’s now taking off in backyards and parks across America.
In the 1990’s seven guys attempted to launch Spikeball to sell in stores like Toys R Us marketed towards kids. However, it didn’t go as planned and Spikeball was removed from shelves shortly after its launch.
Following this indecent, Chris Ruder, Co-Founder of Spikeball overheard feedback for nearly a decade of how people wished Spikeball would relaunch. Finally in 2009, Spikeball relaunched and Spikeball was a hit!
Today nearly 125,000 people play Spikeball and absolutely love the game!
I would definitely recommend Spikeball! It is a family fun game for all ages. The first time I played the game, I couldn’t stop because it was such blast. We played for 3 hours!
Chris Ruder took a big risk relaunching Spikeball after failing the first time around, but it goes to show sometimes when you take big risks, big rewards follow.
This is my favorite game to play on the beach.. I LOVE the story behind how Spikeball became a big sport and personally can attest to their solid customer service and have had some positive experiences.
I think that products like this that make a “comeback” can often lead to demand that would be far greater than if it never went away in the first place. A great story and a great game!
Spike Ball seems to be pretty popular among the kids in my hall. I’ve never heard of it before coming to college but its a cool idea and I will probably invest in a net of my own. Also the story about how it was first introduced at Toys R Us is interesting because I think the game is geared more towards older kids.
I have always seen people here playing it outside especially towards the beginning of the year and wanted to give it a try but never got the chance. It looked like the people who were playing it had a lot of fun though for sure!
I have always wondered what this game was called! It is often seen being played on GCC campus, and although I usually cannot grasp the concept of it, I would really love to try to play. Outside “lawn” games have become such a large hit lately, including Corn Hole, and Kan Jam, and I simply see this just as another product to have around at a party to entertain your guests, or just have around and play with family and friends!
I didn’t realize that this failed the first time that it was launched, it’s such a popular game now! The camp that I volunteer at over the summer has had this game for a few years now, and it’s always a camper favorite. I personally have never played, but I know a lot of people who have and who love it.
I played this game with the lacrosse team in California at Laguna beach this past summer. Laguna beach is known for all the volleyball, and everyone was so amazed by Spikeball. It is really cool to see how fast something like this can catch on.
It’s ideas like this that make you wonder why you couldn’t think of it first. What an innovative idea this was to go from nothing to a sport played on every beach, campus, party, and park in the country. Spikeball has become the game to play and is extremely active and fun. Great idea.
