Jeroen Cappaert was originally an engineer for NASA. But he found that he had an idea he wanted pursue. So he left NASA with two others to begin Spire Global. Spire was formed to specialize in data collecting from networks. They have launched twelve successful Earth observation satellites. The organization started out on Kickstarter. Then it moved into an incubator where they raised enough money to create their ideas and put them into motion. They launched their first satellite in 2014. Eventually they stopped creating the satellites and began to move into educational technology. They still are creating more advanced satellites and have a constant flow funding for their work.
That’s so cool to see that a job such as NASA started him off super well with his future aspirations. Satellites require a ton of work and only the experience of NASA may have provided him with the confidence to proceed in his endeavor.
I think that it’s a fantastic idea to create technologies that help us learn about our home planet. I’m interested to know how their educational methods differ from Google’s Earth or Maps.
