The world of charity has remained a sleepy industry for decades. Much of the general population is oblivious to the numerous opportunities available for monetary donation. A young man, Jack Kim, came up with a solution to this problem.
Benelab is a web-based non-profit organization founded by high-school student, Jack Kim as a means to provide foundations with the support they require. Through the creation of a new search engine, people can donate directly to various organizations. Although similar search engines exist, almost all of them are designated for-profit organizations that take a percentage of each donation for themselves. This platform was designed to create significant impact through what can be boiled down to crowd funding.
Featuring a unique practice of donating 100% of their search engine advertisement revenue to a unique cause every month sets them apart by making guaranteeing significant impact, creating a greater sense of community. Additionally, BenelabĀ is made up of high-school volunteers exclusively.
Kim is pursuing a remarkable idea through Benelab. Very few millennials have the ability to take on the charity industry like he has and pivoted to solve a problem in a new, innovative manner. His tenacity and confidence inspires others to take action and pursue their entrepreneurial ventures, even if the timing isn’t perfect.
I really like the name an motto of Benelab. The business is also very interesting for being 100% non-profit. I think having all volunteers in high school definitely helps with that as if adults were to run this they would need to take some profits to sustain their full time work. Very cool business!
It is interesting to read about a non-profit organization because these days there are not a ton of them. I agree with the previous comments about having high schoolers being a great place to find volunteers because they don’t need to also have a full time job.
It’s cool to see a guy this age starting a non-profit business. Most people at this age only care about making money so it really cool to see what jack cool is doing. Donating to a charity can often be a big hassle and is some of the reason people don’t do it more often. This search engine is simple and easy and hopefully will help people to donate. I also like the idea of having high-school volunteers!
This is one of the most unique non-profit business models I have heard in a while. Jack Kim is smart to pull volunteers from high school students because it allows him to donate all the ad revenue. Kim could have chosen to make a profit. It speaks to his character that he chose to keep it a non-profit.
I think that this website is ahead of it’s time. It is so cool seeing someone have a passion for Charity and want to make sure that the charities get 100% of the donations given. I also thought it was super smart of him to make it a search engine so if someone wanted to donate to a certain cause but didn’t know of any specific organizations they are able to find one that fits their desire. Great post!
