With Christmas being right around the corner, my mind thought about all the different ideas people have and gifts people give throughout the season. One thing that stuck with me is how it seems that for some odd reason, ugly Christmas sweaters are always a huge hit. With this topic in mind, I then researched the web. It was easy to find information, there has been so much success. The first article I found mentioned a young kid named Jack McCarthy who has been selling ugly Christmas sweaters since the either grade, and has had a year where he earned $50,000. The article then mentioned that Jack said although he doesn’t plan on selling sweaters forever, he doesn’t think the industry is going away very soon. While I was impressed with Jack’s success, the second article out did Jack. I read an article that was released last year about a company in Detroit (UglyChristmasSweater.com), where they were on pace to sell $5.5 million dollars worth of ugly Christmas sweaters. Fred Hajjar, cofounder of the company, said he was expecting it to disappear at some point, but he said the craze has only gotten stronger. It blows my mind that an ugly Christmas sweater can get so much attention. To me, it just shows that sometimes seemingly “ridiculous” ideas can actually be a diamond in the rough.
Yeah this is crazy, especially the unexpectedness of this seasonal product. I also was expecting the fad to only last maybe a few years, but it is still going strong.
This just goes to show that there is a market for anything. It’s quick money made over the holidays that many entrepreneurs would wish they had thought of.
Who doesn’t love ugly Christmas sweaters? This is an idea that I never want to die. The Holidays are supposed to be filled with tons of spirit, and ugly Christmas sweaters capture this idea. Plus, I was on UglyChristmasSweater.com to check out their stuff, and they have a 3D Christmas sweater where a moose’s head is sticking out of the front of the sweater, and it’s butt is sticking out the back of the sweater. Talk about ugly, but creative!
This is a great example of how one can be successful by pivoting in an industry that others may ignore. Who would have thought that Ugly Christmas Sweaters would be such a huge industry, but it turns out that people have found a way to be very profitable in an industry many others overlooked.
