The college version of the board game Risk. The game GoCrossCampus also known as GXC is an online game that was developed by a group of current and former Yale students. How it works is a group of students from various schools battle for territory on a map of a college campus, anything from a grassy area or a dining hall or dormitory building. They are trying to create a team based social gaming. As a start-up they raised $1 million in venture capital.

There ideas came from a desire to fuel team and school spirit against other colleges and universities. As well as against affinity groups, ultimately taking sports and college rivalries beyond the playing field or classroom test scores and onto every students laptop.

From the reviews to the left you can see that the appeal to this has grown beyond the appeal of college campuses. Professional businesses has found this as an interesting way to create some fun in the work place and some friendly competition. They currently have three functioning games that are available on their website and allow collaboration across laptop users.

Box

Maybe Aaron Levie’s story will inspire us in ENTR 101 to take the elevator pitch business ideas to the next level. During Aaron’s time at USC he was assigned a project to come up with  a business idea. Taking this project he examined cloud storage options and after putting in the extra effort and contacting organizations on how they were storing their data and content, Levie came up with an idea.

He saw that the cloud storage market was fragmented. He saw an opportunity and built an online file storage business as a tool for businesses and individuals to access and store documents and files. After his fall semester junior year, Levie took a leave of absence to launch Box.

At Box’s beginning stage, it was a cloud that companies and individuals could pay to store their their files in the cloud. Being bold, Levie secured an angel investment from Mark Cuban himself after sending a cold e-mail to the billionaire. In 2007, Levie and high school friend and now CFO Dylan Smith, pivoted the business to focus on selling to businesses. By 2012 their cloud had spread to Europe, opening an office in London.

By 2014, this college business idea was being used by 40% of the Fortune 500 companies. Inspiration to the immense potential of a forced business idea project to a globally used and known company.

Together We Rise

College student, Danny Mendoza started Together We Rise after uncovering the horrendous truth of his 9 year old cousin Roger. Roger, was living in a car when Danny learned of his situation. Danny worked while in college to get Roger into a real home. After this close to home experience, Danny created Together We Rise. The mission of Together We Rise was to help give foster children the opportunity to make their own choices. These choices included music lessons, mentoring, sports, athletics, and resume writing. This was designed for kids to become prepared for the age of 18 when foster care comes to an end so that they could move on and be successful outside of the system.

Together We Rise has turned into a campaign site, for other outside organizations fighting for the well-being of youth children and high school students who are limited in resources and opportunity to be successful.

Majoring in Finding a Cure for Cancer

Two students from Dartmouth College, Souray Sinha and Riley Ennis are the founders and now CEO and COO of Oncolinx. Oncolinx, which creates technology that targets cancer and destroys cancer cells specifically and not the healthy cells. With this it helps those facing cancer treatments avoid and bypass the negative, uncomfortable and painful side-effects they face when going through chemotherapy. Oncolinx was founded in 2017 they have formed over 14 partnerships and have six academic collaborations.

The process for Oncolinx began with the targeting platform and technology of Azonafide. Azonafide attaches to tumor cells and both induces cancer cell death and activates the immune system through immunogenic cell death (ICD). Azonafide then led to shared-data and a material-transfer agreement that allowed Oncolinx to work with Azonafide with a patented linker technology. Lastly, was the design of ICD enabling studies which led to an agreement on commercialization and clinical trial strategies.

Currently, Oncolinx is partnered with more than 12 leading pharmaceutical companies and hopes to enter into clinical trials soon. The founders, Souray Sinha and Riley Ennis have a specific goal to work with academic groups and other startups that have to do with protein/aptamer-drug conjugates as well as immunotherapy combination studies.

What a great example of ambitious goals, fighting something that has affected so many and being successful. Then to take that success and open up the door to other students to also have a possibility to be apart of this research and technology.
