Hart Main

Hart Main is a 14-year old that came up with the idea of manly scented candles when he was teasing his sister about the girly scented ones she was selling for a school fundraiser. Although she didn’t expect him to fully pursue the manly scented candles idea himself, he did, and the idea has turned into a nationwide success. Main put in an initial investment of $100, his parents put in $200, and they all worked together to develop the candles as a group. The available scents include: Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Fresh Cut Grass, Grandpa’s Pipe and more. Today, ManCans candles are in over 60 stores across the country and have sold about 9,000 units. Main will stick with selling ManCans’ inventory until he has to shift his focus back into school in the fall. I mean, he is only 14 after all!

Although the success of this idea is apparent, it began as something much less than what you might think. “It started as a joke,” Main says of the origins of his company. “It really wasn’t meant to turn into anything serious.”

I believe there is a lesson to be learned in Hart’s story. The lesson is that sometimes we may think of our idea as a joke or someone might disapprove of our idea, but that idea just might be worth a lot of money to other people. The only thing you can do is put it into action!

Mobile Monopoly

Adam Hortwitz, a 15 year-old high school sophomore, grew up in the Pacific Palisades and discovered a mean-spirited gossip blog that become extremely popular throughout his school and with his classmates. However, concerned parents took down the site only weeks after it was set up. Adam, being the clever young entrepreneur that he is, had a newfound desire to find online success in the world of business.

Adam’s started Urban Stomp, a website where he posted music and the locations of parties in the area he lived. He made a minor profit by selling clothes through affiliate links but this was just the start of his creativity in the online world. Adam proved too successful as Urban Stomp drove over 800 people to one party, which led him to shut down the site only 2 weeks after it kicked off.

Learning from these mistakes and taking inspiration from other, more positive sources, Adam now teaches people age 15 and older how to make money online. His online information courses, Mobile Monopoly and Cell Phone Treasure, teach readers how to use tools like cellphones to create a steady cash flow on your own time. Adam’s program has taught thousands how to turn their cellphones into a treasure that generates hundreds of dollars each and every day. In fact, his programs are so effective that each of these companies earn well over $200,000 a year in direct sales alone.

So for a kid that likes to play Call of Duty and ride a skateboard, Adam Horwitz is doing pretty well for himself. It just goes to show that anyone can be innovative their own way to be successful with the tools in our world today!

“Water” You Waiting For?

When he was just eleven, Richie Stachowski found his family’s vacation to Hawaii frustrating as he couldn’t speak to his father while they were snorkeling. Such an awful problem to have, right? That evening, after their snorkeling adventure, he began drawing designs and ended up spending his $267 of savings to build a prototype underwater megaphone. Richie’s product, appropriately named the Water Talkie, was built using a small plastic cone, a blow valve and a mouthpiece, allowing swimmers to talk to each other under water.

This completely solved his problem of not being able to talk to his father underwater! The young inventor patented his invention and started Short Stack LLC, a company name inspired by his love for pancakes.

The young entrepreneur took a few days off school to present Toys “R” Us with his idea and was shocked when he received an order for 50,000 units! Other retailers, including K-Mart and Walmart, soon followed, and his Water Talkies were the hit of the summer of 1997, netting Richie’s company around $500,000 in revenue.

Three years after inventing the Water Talkie, Richie sold his company and the rights to produce his inventions to Wild Planet Toys in San Francisco. This company then went on to produce more exciting underwater products like a pool pogo stick, underwater binoculars, and Pool Peepers- swim masks that make a child appear to be an animal or creature of some sort when coming out of the water. All Richie’s inventions are still available in stores as well! Maybe we can all get some Water Talkies and have our Elevator Pitches underwater next year!

Richie Stachowski’s journey as an inventor is an inspiration to all of us, proving that creativity, simplicity and fun are a good foundation for successful product ideas.

PopCap Games

In 2000, John Vechey founded what is now one of the most popular computer video game creators of all time. With the introduction of Steam, an online platform that provides users with installation and automatic updating of games on computers, community features such as friends lists, and even cloud-saving capabilities, the PC gaming industry is being revolutionized right before our eyes.

Beginning on August 30, 2006, 17 of PopCap’s products became available via Steam. In keeping with PopCap tradition, each PopCap game offered through Steam is available for a free trial period as well as for purchase. Some of PopCap’s most popular games include Bejeweled, Chuzzle, Peggle, and Plants vs. Zombies. These titles became so popular that on July 12, 2011, Electronic Arts (EA) announced it was buying PopCap for $650 million with an additional $100 million stock option.

PopCap’s leading title Bejeweled has sold more than $50 million units across all major platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, iPhone, and Android. Now, the business is a part of EA Games and the creator, John Vechey, is worth over $60 million. This just goes to show that no matter who you are, you can come into any industry with your creative ideas and make an impact.

Million Dollar Hobbie

The niche hobby of video games is something almost all kids enjoy. Whether it’s playing with friends or others online, video games have made their way to being one of the biggest pastimes of our generation. However, gaming has only really been thought of as a hobby until recently. With the introduction of Twitch.tv and the ever so popular YouTube, playing video games has taken a HUGE turn from what it used to be. This leaves our generation wondering: what if you could play video games for a living?

For one millennial entrepreneur, this dream became a reality. Jordan Maron, more famously known as Captain Sparklez, is a professional gamer who turned his hobby into a career on YouTube and Twitch.tv. Not only is he a self-made entrepreneur, but he does it while doing one of his favorite things. He uploaded his first video on July 1st, 2013 so he’s a bit of a newbie in the YouTube world, but still a big success. He originally started out posting guide and help videos for those who were stuck on different levels of Minecraft, but he didn’t just stop there.

Captain Sparklez turned his channel into the place to be for all things gaming including instructional videos for other games and parody video comedies using some of the most popular video games. He also uploaded some cool music videos, which helped him gain popularity in the comedic part of YouTube. He’s now one of the most profitable stars on YouTube and is worth $8.2 million.

If you’re curious about his channel you should check it out on at: https://www.youtube.com/user/CaptainSparklez\

The Beauty of Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter provide tons of help for small businesses in raising capital and getting their name into people heads. However, one idea by a young entrepreneur took this business for a spin when Indiegogo was created in 2008 by Slava Rubin. Being a graduate from Wharton University, Rubin is the Co-founder and CEO of Indiegogo- one of the first and now largest crowdfunding websites on the internet.

The site runs on a rewards-based system, meaning donors, investors, or customers who are willing to help fund a project or product can donate and receive a gift, rather than an equity stake in the company. However, Rubin has stated that the company is interested in moving towards equity funding in the future once laws around it become clearer in the U.S.

In 2014, Indiegogo launched Indiegogo Life, a service that people can use to raise money for emergencies, medical expenses, celebrations, or other life events. Since Indiegogo Life does not charge a platform fee, fundraisers keep more of the money they raise. Indiegogo Life is a great example of forward-thinking from CEO Slava Rubin and really displays the customer-satisfying and personal direction he wants to take his company, which I really admire.

By the end of this year, it is predicted that global crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter will double annual revenues, to $6 billion worldwide. Under Rubin, Indiegogo has become a leader in web-based crowdfunding, having raised $15M in Series A funding from Insight Venture Partners and Kohsla Ventures a year ago. Rubin has played an influential role in working with the White House and helping to finalize the rules and regulations for equity crowdfunding in the United States.

Recapping, Slava Rubin is an extremely inspirational and successful millennial entrepreneur and his company continues to grow larger day after day. I found it very interesting learning more about his story and young business. I also explored Indiegogo and found some crazy product ideas and absolutely loved seeing all of these people who invest and help kickstart other businesses.
