Ryan’s Recycling Company

At the very early age of 3, Ryan Hickman knew he loved the idea of recycling. He went to the recycling center with his dad and found it his passion. Ryan didn’t like seeing bottles and cans on the ground, and unlike most kids, wanted to do something about it. He started asking his neighbors to keep their bottles and cans for him to recycle. Of course, the word had spread, and people loved what he was doing. By age seven, he was running his own recycling business in Orange County California. In his seven years, he had recycled nearly 1 million cans and bottles. He was doing Earth Day, every day!

Because of his passion, Hickman was recognized with several awards and recognitions. He appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Pickler and Ben Show, Little Big Shots, and was featured on NBC, CNN, CNBC, PBS, Fox News, Amazon Prime’s Self Made series, Australia’s channel 7 Sunrise morning channel, Huffington Post, Voices of America, David Wolf, AJ+, UpWorthy, Now This!, AOL, Mini Moguls, 60 Seconds Docs, ATTN, KBS, USA Today, Univision, Good Morning America, The TODAY SHOW, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, CBS Evening News, and ABC World News. He was also recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2017. He was also selected as Top 15 Kids Changing the World by MSN, 40 Kids Who Have Changed the World by Good House Keeping in 2019 and 2020, 2020 List of Kids of the Decade Changing the World by Reader’s Digest and was featured in TIME Magazine for Kids. He was also nominated for Kid of the Year by TIMES Magazine. He ALSO partnered with Old Navy and H&M for his eco efforts across the world.

Not only was Ryan featured in several top news, and he also founded the nonprofit organization Project3R. He also co-founded Recycle from Home.

Let’s just say, Ryan is truly making a difference in the world, and it shows, his age doesn’t prohibit him from succeeding and sharing his passion to others.

If a kid like me can make a difference, anyone can, too,” Hickman says. “When we all do just a little bit, it adds up to a huge difference. Thanks for helping me clean up our planet.”

The ManCan Candles

Meet Hart Main, inventor of the ManCan Candles, not to be confused with the Man Can Candles Co. At the early age of 13, Hart was looking to buy a $1,200 bicycle after doing a triathlon on an old bike. After that, he wanted to get a real Trek bike, but his parents told him he had to buy it himself. In response to needing the money, Hart had teased his sister about the girly scents of candles she had been selling for a school fundraiser when he came upon the idea of making masculine candles for men. His mom encouraged him to make scents that would be more alluring to guys. At first, Main didn’t think much of the idea. He made scents he thought would appeal to men, like Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Grandpa’s Pipe, New Mitt, and Fresh Cut Grass to name a few. What makes his candles even more unique is that he makes them in soup cans, which speaks for in his name, ManCan Candles. He started in his kitchen, and soon after, found himself making candles at Beaver Creek Candle Co., and selling his candles across nearly 15o stores in the United Sates. He was making 20,000 in no time and has built the number to hundreds of thousands.

While his business is still running 10+ years later, Hart also wrote a small book with his father, encouraging other young entrepreneurs to try new things. Hart showed the power of a young mind by building such a business with little resources. His hard works shows in his ambitions of doing a triathlon at the age of 13, and then creating an entire business of candles. It goes without saying, anyone can be an entrepreneur if they apply themself to their ambitions.

Lavish by Grace

Meet Sherline Raaw, a young entrepreneur who created a Christian apparel business during the pandemic. Sherline first had been waiting tables for five years but knew that she didn’t want to be a server all her life. Tired of her life as a server, Sherline needed change. She decided to join the Air Force for stability and for their benefit. During her time joining the Air Force, Sherline also just got proposed to by her boyfriend of four years, while still in tech school, and trying to move out of her parents’ home. Despite her busy schedule. Sherline still found time to be with God.

She kept having this idea of Lavish by Grace in her head, but she didn’t know where to go. Asking God for guidance in her busy schedule, she looked to Him for what to do next. Right in 2019, when the pandemic hit, everyone was at home. That’s when she really found time and got to design her brand more. During her time at home, she noticed the lack of minimal Christian apparel and decided to aim her business in that direction. She started creating minimal(istic) matching loungewear that still embodied Christ. Her own idea took 2 years before she launched it. This idea had been brewing for quite some time, but thanks to Covid, she really got to invest her time in it.

The mission of Lavish by Grace is, “we live in a world where everything runs out and everything has a limit. However, God’s grace, which has been lavished upon us, does not. There is no better word to describe it than lavish. Lavish by Grace was founded with the intention of sharing my faith and raising awareness of Jesus Christ using minimal and comfortable clothing,” says Raaw. This beautiful idea brings a strong community together with simple and comfortable clothing.

Despite her busy schedule, Sherline was able to launch Lavish by Grace, woman apparel, during the pandemic. She wanted it to be more than just minimalist, cute loungewear for woman though. She wanted to create a community centered on Christ and comfort. With her company, she’s done well to sell at high-quality apparel while continuing to foster the Christian mindset. Her business is only at its wonderful beginning!

Dreadhead Films

Meet brothers Julien and Justen Turner, young entrepreneurs in the film industry who do short narrative films, just at the ages of 25 and 21, respectively. Starting close to us, they have their business in Columbus, Ohio. Their inspiration started at an early age, where their parents had VHS cameras. They had the opportunity to use their mom’s old MacBook to play around with iMovie, where they got to play with special effects. They practiced their work first in the Midwest (Illionois), instead of the big cities like Hollywood.

Some of their inspiration flows from Tyler Perry, who made Atlanta a big film city. That’s their goal for Ohio. They don’t plan to move out of Ohio as they build their film industry. Another of their inspirations was The Karate Kid, where they got to see a black kid in a blockbuster film, and with a big afro, which inspired Justen to grow out his hair, which was the reason for the name of their film business.

Though young, their success has been noticed by many. They’ve been featured on platforms like Good Morning America, The New York Times, CNN, and MTV. They’ve also partnered with some big names, like Beats by Dre, Nike, Amazon, Air Jordan, and Adobe. They also received awards such as the Forbes Under 30, Webbys for the Best Video Campaign in Advertising and Best Video campaign for their Nike x Social Status campaign, as well as the gold award for New Director of the Year at 2023’s The Shots Americas Awards.

Their goal is to show their own journey and experience through their filmmaking life, by putting in some type of commentary in their work. At such young ages, they’ve been blessed with many opportunities, but due to their age, they’ve also been limited in what they can do. As they grow their business, they hope to bring longer-film narratives to the area. While they continue to pursue this career, they also want to be an outlet for others in the industry, by supporting other Midwest filmmakers.

Children of Passion – Pocketti Plushies – Sydney and Toni Loew

Meet Sydney and Toni Loew, two sisters whose lives changed right in Middle School. Their product was inspired by an entrepreneur class Syndey had in 7th grade, which allowed her to write out a business, even create a prototype, and then she got to pitch the idea. Her target was 11-14 year old kids, so she chose to go down the toy route, where she created her business, Pocketti Plushies! She wanted something that would differ from other plushies, and decided to add something functional to the plushie by giving it a pocket to hold a phone in. Because her product did so well, she was able to get her plushies launched into a business.

With a rocketing business, Sydney and her sister Toni began their career, creating unique plushies, with powers as they called it. Each plushie was uniquely designed and made with different personalities. They were able to attend several sales events and create television commercials, as well being able to pitch their ideas to schools. They were also awarded several prizes such as Wonder Girls by Women in Toys in 2016.  They were also able to get Walmart as a client!

While their business is run by them and their mother, they also attended school. Sydney is now a graphic designer intern at Disney’s Yellow Shoes internal advertising agency. While her sister goes to USC’s Thornton School of Music, where she is in two music bands! Their love for all things creative is truly inspirational as they continue to grow their business across the world.

Despite their successes, even they have had rejections. They participated on Shark Tank 3 times and got a no each time, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing their business!

With their creativity and passion for innovation, they have created a business they hope to grow across the world. For now, we can appreciate how young these girls were when they began their journey, representing that even in Middle School, anything can be done if you put your mind to it. Success isn’t defined by the number of statistics, but by the satisfaction it gives to the customers and to you.

College Dropout to Millionaire-Ryan Trahan

A Youtuber and Entrepreneur, Ryan Trahan started at 14 to become an entrepreneur. He started a simple water bottle business that would later help make him into a millionaire. Starting his YouTube channel in 2015, Ryan posted about his daily life at college as a student athlete. However, he quickly gained followers due to his creativity and humor within his videos. Having adopted just 30,000 YouTube followers and juggling his business, Ryan was pressured with his college or his business. His school had set a tight rule with him, as a student athlete, making it so he couldn’t brand himself properly while in college. Because of this, Ryan had to choose between a high-risk endeavor or the college route, and he chose the entrepreneurial side. Ryan had the same mindset Peter Thiel speaks of, saying, “I view creating as entrepreneurial. Creating something from nothing has always been ingrained in me.” Thus, his career rocketed. His small water business became a great part of his revenue. The business, known as Neptune, was built to create sustainable water bottles which would reduce plastic waste. With his social enterprise, Ryan also used his business to support several organizations centered around cancer.

While Ryan had Neptune blooming, he also opened up a clothing line called Hydra Collection, which became his personal merch on his social media accounts, as well as another clothing line, Howdy Howdy, and a candy company, Joyride. Creating innovative videos on YouTube and establishing his businesses across the world has made Ryan Trahan into a wealthy, young entrepreneur. From going on live television to creating television series of his own, Ryan meets every corner around the world to grow and engage with his audience.

Ryan is known for his penny-to-a-house series and simply racing people in airports. Through his creative and entertaining work, he has amassed 17 million followers on YouTube with over 3 billion views worldwide!
