Rare Beauty – Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is famously known for staring on the Disney TV series Wizards of Waverly Place and appeared in other movies. She was also known for being a singer and songwriter with her most popular songs being Same Old Love and Hands to Myself. Now, she is also known as a businesswoman and entrepreneur.

At the age of 29, Gomez decided to launch Rare Beauty, a full collection of makeup, in September 2020. The packaging is feminine yet simple and it is made to be accessible, both in terms of skill and ability. Fans have pointed out that the rounded applicators are designed to be easy for people with arthritis to use. Some of her products include foundation, concealer, blush, highlighter, two different kinds of lipstick, lipliner, brushes, a makeup sponge, and a face mist. She wanted to create products that help people enhance their natural features without altering them. She opened up to reporters while showcasing her Rare Beauty Spring 2022 collection about how her beauty philosophy has changed over the years. She talked about how her past insecurities inspired her to launch a brand that breaks down “unrealistic standards of perfection.”

A major element of Rare Beauty has been its mission to impact, driving discussions around mental health and paving the way for brands and consumers to speak publicly about dealing with pressure, stress, and anxiety. 1 percent of all Rare Beauty sales go to the Rare Impact Fund, the brand’s nonprofit affiliate working to expand mental health awareness and services, specifically in underserved communities.

Personally, I have products from Rare Beauty and will continue to buy from and support her brand because of the story and mission behind it. I have never been into using makeup as a way of completely changing the way I, and I love that she created this brand for the main purpose of enhancing natural features instead of completely altering them like most beauty brands tend to do.

Adam Guild – Owner.com

Adam Guild is a 24-year-old who never finished high school and opened his restaurant-software startup called Owner.com. He co-founded Owner in May 2020 and is the chief executive of the company. Guild grew up in Los Angeles and has been an entrepreneur since high school, which he quit during 10th grade to pursue his business idea. He has received the Thiel Fellowship grant, which is a program created by venture capitalist Peter Thiel for young people who drop out or never attend college. Guild was extremely dedicated to the business and says he has worked 15-hour days, seven days a week, without taking a vacation or sick day for the past six years.

Owner.com is used by independent restaurant owners to create websites with online-ordering features, as well as for other tasks such as running marketing campaigns and improving placement in online search results. They charge a $500 a month fee for the use of the software. It is based in Palo Alto, California and serves thousands on customers in the U.S. Through the use of this software, restaurants save money compared to orders placed through sites such as DoorDash and Uber Eats. This startup has reached a $200 million valuation and, in a job posting a few months ago, the company said they had $15 million in annualized revenue. They said they have since been growing at a rate of 30% month-over-month. Investors in the financing brought Owner’s total raised to $58.7 million.

Overall, I think this is a great story about Adam Guild and his success. This goes to show that with great dedication, you can be a very successful business owner without even finishing high school. They even risked years of their lives, their families, their saving all to pursue their dreams and I think they do a great job of showing that owning a business is possible.

Cory Nieves – Mr. Cory’s Cookies

Cory Nieves is a twenty-year-old entrepreneur who founded Mr. Cory’s Cookies at the age of 6. This is an all-natural cookie store that offers fourteen original cookie recipes such as Double Dark, Oatmeal Raisin, and Sugar.

This all started when he would complain to his mom about taking the bus to school and wanted to buy a car instead. Because of this, he decided to sell hot cocoa in the town of Englewood to raise funds for a new car for his mom. He would sell Swiss Miss for $1 a cup. Then, he would expand his business to start selling lemonade and cookies for a college fund. He started searching online for the perfect cookie recipe and once he found it, the recipe was a hit. That is when he knew he had a business. He would take cookies to local races and festivals and would sometimes make up to $150 on the weekends. At one point, his business was shut down for selling treats baked in a home kitchen, which was a health code violation. He was referred to an attorney and he was able to form a business legally and secure a commercial kitchen.

Mr. Cory’s Cookies has partnered with many other businesses such as J. Crew, Mercedes-Benz, Pottery Barn, Ralph Lauren, Whole Foods, Macy’s, and many more. He was also featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2015, which was a big hit, and he gained an overwhelming number of orders. To scale, he sought out investment and made an appearance on CNBC’s The Profit and he earned a $100,000 cash infusion. He launched an e-commerce site, hired cookie helpers, and started shipping products across the country.

It was not easy making the cookies, but Cory was very dedicated and motivated and persevered through many challenges. Cory’s story is inspiring to many people, and it goes to show that with dedication, you can go from making and selling cookies from your home to a big successful business.
