Brittany Canty: Co-founder of Comfort Eats

Brittany Canty is the co-founder of a brand called Comfort Eats. This business idea came about when she was visiting her best friend and co-founder, Reina in New Zealand. When Brittany visited, she came with her suitcase full of snacks from back home that her friend had missed so much. The joy that it brought her friend made them think- how can we ship comfort food to people that can’t find these foods where they live?

Brittany Canty

This is exactly what Comfort Eats does. Brittany and Reina have an online shop where people can have their favorite American snacks shipped to them while in a different country. They said they have seen people from other cultures become interested in their business too, not just Americans who are traveling. Brittany says her past experience as a product manager has given her lots of experience with their business. She tries to set one goal to accomplish a day, giving her freedom while also getting something important accomplished for the business.

Brittany says that she would give her younger self the advice of “trust your gut!”. She explains the world has a way of putting insecurities on young people and making them triple check everything. Her and her friend started this business as young entrepreneurs and they succeeded by being passionate in this one area.

Brittany says that listening to their customers is most important in running Comfort Eats. Their voice is most important in getting the right food delivered that will bring joy in so many ways. Brittany and Reina will continue to grow their business, reaching many people who miss the taste of their hometowns.

Bella Weems: Origami Owl

Bella Weems is a 28-year-old who is the founder of the jewelry company Origami Owl. At just 14 years old, she turned her passion into a business after her parents told her she would have to earn her first car. Origami Owls main product is called the “Living Locket” which is a locket which you can add in your own, personalized charms to. This is unique because each charm can represent the persons hobbies and interests and showcase them when they wear the necklace. Bella also sells bracelets, earrings, and other accessories.

Bella is a busy kid entrepreneur, but she still allots time to give back. She started the “Owlettes Initiative” in which she personally mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs ages 12-17. Bella shares tips with these kids and any advice from her success story. I think this part of her business is truly inspiring because she found a way to help others as well as keep up a successful business.

Bella says the best part of being a kid entrepreneur is, “…being able to encourage kids of all ages to not be afraid to reach for their dreams and never let anyone tell them they’re not good enough or their idea isn’t good enough.” Bella’s business Origami Owl not only lets people express themselves through their jewelry but inspires young entrepreneurs to take the risk to start making something they are passionate about become big.

Mikaila Ulmer: Founder of “Me & the Bees” Lemonade

Mikaila Ulmer is a 17-year-old girl who started her own lemonade business at a very young age. The business idea started after young Mikaila got stung by a bee and wanted to learn more about bees to overcome her fear of them.  At age 4, she started a business by creating a very small lemonade stand. Very quickly, this turned into the business “Me & the Bees” as a result.

Mikaila is widely successful, at just age 9, she struck an $11 million distribution deal with US supermarket giants Whole Foods Market. Mikaila has also been invited to the White House twice, featured on Good Morning America, NBC News, Forbes Magazine, and Time Magazine for her entrepreneurial success. Mikaila is very busy; she juggles school, her business, and public speaking. The unique thing about her business is that 10% of her brand’s proceeds are donated to bee conservation charities. It is amazing how she used a challenge of hers (getting stung by a bee) to learn more about it and start up a profitable and charitable business.

Mikaila’s lemonade recipe is unique because it comes from her great Grandmother Helen’s flaxseed lemonade. It is fresh-squeezed, and each bottle is made with care. Her family has a huge part in helping her business thrive. As an extension to her business, Mikaila has created a “Bee-to-Z guide” for young entrepreneurs. Here, young entrepreneurs can find inspiration, business tips, and more to make their big ideas come to life. A very inspirational quote from Mikaila reads, “My generation—we’re the future,” Mikaila says. “When we grow up, we’re going to be the people who are the presidents and the leaders of the world. […]  If we start at a young age making a difference, donating back, giving back, when we grow up we can do that on a larger scale.” Mikaila’s business proves that, just like the bees, you are never too small to make a difference.

Raelynn Heath: Rae’s Materials

Raelynn Heath is an 8-year-old girl from Missouri who started her own jewelry business at the age of 4. She specializes at making bracelets which she sells on Facebook and Etsy. Raelynn was recently featured in the “1 Million Cups Black Entrepreneurship Showcase” on Feb. 2

8, 2018, at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Raelynn started making her bracelets out of plastic but upgraded to using acrylic and bubblegum beads when she was 5, and even uses materials like polymer clay. Raelynn also enjoys upcycling items such as chip bags, duct tape rolls, and old clothes. Raelynn’s business is unique because she has a generous purpose in creating most of her work. She gives bracelets to community members who have experienced recent trauma. Her big heart is a motivating factor of her business. Rae’s Materials is also unique because Raelynn has created this business at such a young age. Being able to create these bracelets at the age of four is a special talent, and it is amazing that she is using her talent to help those in need.

Raelynn hopes to increase her business to other areas of fashion as well but knows that school is her first priority at the moment. She hopes to study in Paris someday and get a degree in fashion. It is impressive that Raelynn has such a clear idea of how she wants her future business to expand at such a young age. Raelynn’s mom is in the process of helping her get a business license for Rae’s Materials, and her mom suspects that she could be on her way to a millionaire at age 16. Raelynn’s hopeful outlook and creativity has gotten her far in her entrepreneurial journey, and she will continue to grow her jewelry business using her great skill.

Stephanie Purcell: Redesigned Classics

Stephanie Purcell is a young entrepreneur who founded the company Redesigned Classics. This is an interior design business focused on eccentric, new, and often vintage design styles. Stephanie works with her husband who is part of a real estate investment business. I thought this was interesting because it allows her to express her design ideas on houses her husband is showing.

Stephanie’s business is different from other interior design businesses because she focuses on re-purposing items, being low-budget, and making the space unique. Often times interior design is extremely expensive, but Stephanie’s goal is to lower that cost while still getting the same, amazing design elements in a home.

Stephanie is also a freelance producer, so often times she spends her days working on projects for that job. Her typical day can vary a lot, but she has a blog for her interior design company and writes many articles. To stay organized, Stephanie creates many weekly lists in order to stay on track. She also keeps a monthly list for her design goals for the month. I think this is an essential aspect of a business; making lists ensures that things are getting done to keep it up and running.

To begin her interior design process, Stephanie first meets with the client to bounce ideas around and get a feel for what they want in their home. After this, she creates a 2-D concept online for what the space will look like. I think this is very unique and differentiates with others who may just draw out the space. Stephanie’s use of modern technology is a helpful aspect to her business.

Stephanie says her background as a Producer has given her many helpful management skills needed to run her business. She recommends that when starting up a business that you don’t do it all on your own. There are many mentors and resources out there to help you grow your business.

I believe Stephanie’s business Redesigned Classics is an innovative way to design and recreate homes. She uses her producer skills as well as the help from her husband who is a real estate agent to make her business flourish. Creating low-budget, re-purposed, and unique spaces is the heart of her business, and it has gotten her very far in her entrepreneurial career.

Jacob Landis-Eigsti- Jacob LE Video Production

Jacob Landis-Eigsti is the founder of Jacob LE Video Production which helps companies gain new marketing and video production clients. He has run his own business for 10 years now and is very successful. Jacob says he started this business because he saw many businesses struggling to tell their story and connect with others online. He wanted to use his marketing and video production skills to help other businesses.

Jacob’s business is very innovative because he uses the internet to communicate with people on how to grow their business through video. I found it unique that his goal is to teach people how to market their businesses better, instead of only trying to make his business the best. He is very selfless in this sense.

Jacob says he starts off each day by making a to-do list with three things he wants to get accomplished for the day. He also turns his phone off for 90-minute blocks in order to get tasks done without getting distracted. Techniques like these demonstrate a focused business person. He also said a success strategy of his is to always follow up with a client or business partner you’ve been talking to. This allows for closure or further conversation with peers.

Facebook, Instagram, and online video advertising are some of the things Jacob focuses on helping people with in his business. We are becoming more and more dependent on social media every day, so I think it was very innovative of Jacob to incorporate this into his business. If people are unsure how to market themselves online, it could be the downfall to their business. Jacob LE Video Production is an easy solution to help small/medium businesses with these advertising techniques.

Being a marketing major, Jacob Landis-Eigsti specifically inspires me to grow in my marketing knowledge so that I can eventually help people in the way that he does. In an interview with Carlyn Runnels he states, “Also, learn business skills first as an entrepreneur. It’s important to be good at your craft, but business skills and sales skills are incredibly important.” This inspires me to learn the basic business skills first, because this will set the foundation for being able to help people with all kinds of businesses, like Jacob does.

Below is a series of blog posts Jacob has posted on a site called Medium in order to assist with marketing, social media and video strategies.
