Thomas Fields

Thomas Fields was a successful high school basketball player when he suddenly began to suffer devastating knee injuries that ended his career. While in recovery he couldn’t play basketball the same way he used to due to his knees, but he also saw a problem with the lack of affordable sports equipment. This gave him an idea of an affordable shooting net that could extent to twelve feet and then retract back and fit in a backpack. The name of his company is called GRIND Interactive and their main product is called the grind machine, which is a portable shooting machine that catches basketballs and “passes” the ball back to the athlete. This is a great invention as the market for these types of machines has been rapidly growing the past ten to fifteen years. I also love seeing young athletes realize there is more to life than their own athletic career, and pursuing careers in business all while tying their business back to sports. Fields’ use of his own pain both literally and figuratively, helped him create a now booming business that helped land him on this years Forbes Under 30, a very prestigious honor.

Evan Hafer

The market for coffee is one that is excited and ever changing, but it can seem boring to the normal person. This is where Evan Hafer comes in. Black Rifle Coffee Company brings a new twist to how coffee is made and branded. Black Rifle Coffee is a veteran owned and operated company that strives to make great coffee for a great cause. Their website says they specialize in small batch coffee and have many different varieties of roasts and profiles. While I myself don’t usually drink coffee, many of my friends have drank Black Rifle Coffee and they love it and what the company stands for. Being a veteran owned company, many of the company’s objectives go towards serving the military, veterans and their families. In their mission statement, they have a vision for their company to hire ten thousand veterans to work and make a living outside of the military. On top of this, they have a fund called the BRCC Fund, which supports the military and first responders financially, as well as serving to help the environment. Hafer has created a truly inspiring and patriotic company that strives to help bring great coffee and great change to the United States. He is an inpsiration and shows what a little bit of ambition and a vision can do for young entrepreneurs.

Jack Haldrup

In the world of soap, there really is not much variety, especially for men. 3 in 1 and 5 in 1 shampoos, all with the same three scents, men can find it hard at times to find a soap that works and smells good. That’s what Jack Haldrup thought when he created Dr. Squatch, a soap brand designed for men. He created the company to make organic bar soaps that smelt and felt good on the skin, and that did not smell like the soap men had been using their whole lives. With scents like pine tar, grapefruit IPA, goat’s milk and many others, Haldrup had created a brand that challenged the status quo of mens hygiene and sent it into oblivion. I have used Dr. Squatch products and am a fan of how the soap smells and feels, as they have bars that have differing levels of exfoliation for different types of skin. Haldrup saw this problem of soap and that no one was doing anything about it, and seized the opportunity and has never looked back. They have gone fully into catering to men, especially in how they brand and advertise their products, with most commercials being in the woods, with a man with a beard and long hair talking aggressively about soap. So while at times the company may seem like a joke, their products show that they obviously do care a lot about soap and serving the needs as it pertains to men’s hygiene.

Taylor Lewan

To people familiar with the NFL or Michigan Football, the name Taylor Lewan is not new to you. Lewan, a former First round pick and current Tennessee Titans tackle found his start in entrepreneurship a good time after he began his NFL career. On top of being almost a perennial Pro-Bowler, he has begun publishing almost weekly podcasts that include himself, former teammate Will Compton, and numerous guests which have included the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Larry the Cable Guy, Brian Urlacher and many other popular football and pop culture figures. The name of the podcast is “Bussin’ With the Boys”. The reason for this is simple: the podcast takes place in an old school bus, and it is hosted by the boys (Lewan and Compton). The podcast has become ultra successful as Barstool Sports eventually started sponsoring the Boys, widening their audience and influence. Lewan’s podcast is constantly near the top of the charts and they even started selling merchandise and clothing with his brand on it. The reason I believe Lewan is a good example to use for a young entrepreneur is because he did not try to reinvent the wheel. Podcasts have been a rapidly growing market for many years and Lewan noticed this and thought his platform as one of the League’s best players would be a good opportunity for him to not only have fun but maybe make a little more money.

Matthew Mullenweg

It is very fitting when talking about young entrepreneurs to talk about Matthew Mullenweg. In 2004, when Mullenweg was not even twenty years old, he created a site named WordPress, which I am currently using. WordPress has become one of the world’s premier content management sites and is the most used blogging website in the world. Mullenweg, a Houston, Texas native, created the company while he was a freshman at the University of Houston, before he dropped out to continue running his company. Soon after he moved to San Francisco the company took off. They recruited top businesspeople from various companies such as Yahoo! and others to try and bring WordPress to the forefront of internet communication. On top of WordPress, Mullenweg is the CEO of another company called Automattic, a play on words of the founder’s first name. This company is a distributed company so all of the employees get sent to different places to do remote work. Most of these jobs are tech and blogging related, with many jobs specifically set up to try and help their sister company WordPress. Mullenweg can be seen as an inspiration that even though you could be a freshman at some University you can still make a big global impact. Am I saying everyone should drop out of college and make a company? Not exactly, but innovation at a young age is definitely a desirable trait I wish I could utilize in a similar way Mullenweg has.

De’Coldest Crawford

De’Coldest Crawford is a Wide Receiver from Shreveport, Louisiana. His name alone has brought him social media fame from a young age, and his play on the field has given him an opportunity to make a living from it. Now a freshman at the University of Nebraska, De’Coldest has the ability to pursue NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals to make money while in college. De’Coldest, as ironic as it sounds, recently signed a deal with an Omaha-based air conditioning company, SOS Heating & Cooling. The deal involves him appearing in commercials and ads for the company, one of which has gone viral on the internet and has received over 5.2 million views. As an athlete, it is really cool to see other athletes my age branding themselves in a positive way and beginning to set themselves up financially for when they graduate from college. It is also a great way for Crawford to show a sort of professionalism in the way he handles himself and his assets he is receiving from this deal. The idea of these NILs is very interesting to me, being a collegiate athlete, because it is nearly impossible to have a job in or out of season because of my schedule, so NIL deals seem to me to be a great way for athletes to bring in a little extra money, food, or gear while at school.
