Sunday- lawn care

I own my own landscaping company and I make a decent amount off of fertilizing lawns. Those days are soon to be extinct with the new company called Sundayfounders. Sundayfounders is a company who figures out your address and then sends you a personalized fertilizer plan for your lawn with a subscription

Potassium Boost

This idea is amazing because if you take a trip to the local yard/hardware store and look at the fertilizer section, there is an enormous amount of fertilizer selection. Sunday takes the hassle of figuring out which fertilizer and which plan is best and optimizes the best one possible.

It all started when Coulter and his brother, Trent, had the problem of having a new home but couldn’t find a fertilizer that wasn’t infested with pesticide. Their solution, a custom fertilizer that helps take the ease of picking out a new fertilizer. With Coulter having a PHD in turf science, the rest of the business is history.

Hanz De Fuko

If you walk into Hal on a busy day or during a class change, you will most likely see some guys with a really nice, messy/slicked back hair style. Those hair styles have possibly/most likely at some point been fueled by Hanz De Fuko. Hanz De Fuko is a hair styling brand that is know for their higher quality with even better results.

David Alfonzo, the founder of Hanz De Fuko, worked for many corporate companies in silicon valley. After twelve years of working for starting ups, he decided to start one of his own and aimed for a goal of being the most dignified, and different hair brands on the market. David teamed up with his friend Christopher Zent, who is the VP of sales and COO, and started creating and marketing the product.

When they were creating the variability of the product, they wanted to make sure there was a product for every single hair style, clothing style, and life style. This resulted in multiple variations of hair products such as a pomade, a clay(clay-mation), and wax. All these have variability of having a slicked back style, a more controlled style, and a messy appearance.

In conclusion, David Alfonzo symbolizes someone who thinks outside of the box as well as recognizes a problem and found a solution to it. He saw that there has not been a hair product that is suitable for various styles and there is not a product that works to their max results. In result, we see the Hanz De Fuko product lines.

Warby Parker

Warby Parker is the most relatable  business that I personally have wrote about, seen in the news, and experienced first hand. The Glasses company started out by just a few college students who were given $2,500 through a seed investment via the college that they attended. After launching, the company was featured on Vogue.com and that is where it took off. In may of 2011, they raised 2.5 million in investments and then in September, the number had risen to 12.5 million.

By April of 2015, the company was valued at 1.2 billion dollars.

The way the company works, and they way it is insanely different than the regular way of purchasing optics, is via their app or website, the user can choose 5 frames, have them shipped to you, the user tries them on, and then you send them back. From there, you revisit the site and order the frames that you want at an insanely low price for a high quality frame and glass lense. Their drive was to essentially make it easier to order glasses and after personally doing the process myself, I had new frames with my prescription with just 30 minutes of work.

These guys inspire me, and should inspire us all, because they took an industry that is huge and consistently needed and bearing, and simply asked the question, “How can we make this easier and more consumer friendly?”. It reminds me of Carvana. Look at how they completely changed the way you can buy and sell a car. Just like with Warby Parker where you don’t have to leave your house, the same method is applied to Carvana.

Nelk

In most recent entertainment, the main goal seems to be to constantly create new content but also place yourself in an awkward situation that everyday people wouldn’t do. That’s what impractical jokers did and now the newest version, Nelk boys, are taking the scene. These guys are originally composed of three guys but now has expanded to multiple prankers and multiple camera crew. Nelk is unique because rather just staying in one city, they travel all over the US and pull different scenes such as dressing up as zoo workers or ruining a wine tour.

While their antics may seem stupid, they built their credibility and released a clothing line with their famous phrase, “Full Send” printed on the clothes and other various items. This idea is great because they coined that phrase and now it is just a common thing to say, and when it is said, it is free promotion for their brand. As they continue to grow, their horizon expands. Recently, they took a tour to Europe and performed different pranks such as stealing soccer balls while playing or pranking golfers in Scotland. They are in inspiration because it shows how something so small, and even quite stupid in a sense, can turn into a smart idea. Obviously they struggled at the beginning but now they are doing overseas tours and selling out their merchandise in 30 minutes.

Opt7 Re-Creating the Lightbulb

As someone who enjoys aftermarket modifications to my vehicle, I can personally vouch for this company who has designed and redesigned various lighting products for cars and other vehicles that change the way they look and offer an inexpensive route to upgrade the safety of your car. Opt7, founded by Kevin Kung, loved the way aftermarket lights looked on vehicles but at the time, in 2006, those parts costed nearly 1000 dollars. With his expertise in stage lighting and engineering, he created a new wave of HID lighting, which are the bulbs in most of your car headlights, that were produced efficiently, had pristine quality, and were inexpensive.

With their passion for a better and cheaper product, they gained entrance to automotive forums and the rest is simply history. However, they did not stop developing. There were other products that needed to be reinvented such as LED lighting, car mounts, and interior show strips. The company kept pushing themselves and their products to the limit and soon they dominated the aftermarket car lighting market. Now they serve off road vehicles which require rugged and nearly undestroy-able products and also motorcycle products that require consistency and heat protection. I have Opt7 lights in my car’s fog light mounting system and also in my headlight lamp brackets in my motorcycle and they surely live up to the test. Opt7 should be an example for all of us to follow because although the market they originally focused on wasn’t large, they realized that other people had a problem that could expand over a vast market.

Roy and Ryan Seiders

If you simply take a look around in your dishwasher or in your kitchen cabinets, most likely you will see a product that has the label YETI on the bottom. Roy and Ryan Seiders, brothers, originally tried forming a fishing rod company but instead they hooked something way bigger, a foot in the cooler market as the highest grade and highest price of products such as mugs, coolers, and buckets.

The company started when the two men were fishing, trying to stand on some sort of bucket or cooler that could provide them with 3 more feet of height to simply create more visibility. In addition to that situation, with the rod company that they already had started, the brothers would constantly be on boats and lakes fishing but struggle with a durable and long lasting cooler. With that, the Yeti was born.

Without even initially trying, the brothers ran into their problem of lack of durability and poor insulation. They noticed that there was not anything currently out on the market right now with those attributes so they took a shot. What makes them extremely innovative is that they keep taking steps forward. For example, in their early years, they moved from coolers to tumblers, and then later on down the road the brothers moved on to insulated buckets and grizzly proof coolers for the most extreme consumers.  The brothers continue to keep dishing out products and I cannot wait for their next addition.
