Ben Pasternak

Ben Pasternak, an Australian native, first became famous for his development of a brain teaser app, Impossible Rush. He developed this app when he was bored in his high school science class, because what else is there to do in a boring class? Ben believes that apps should be created by the intended target consumer. I think this is a brilliant idea, and most of the time ideas come from problems that the inventor is having themselves. Therefore, a brain teaser app with the target audience of kids should be created by kids. Most apps are created by adults for kids, but who better to know what children really want in a game, then children themselves. Sadly, Pasternak sold the app for only $200. Rush Impossible ended up over taking tinder and raking in over 130K on the first day of his release. Ben then created an app called Monkey, a randomized video chat for children, with very strict codes of conduct. It was funded by over 2 million dollars in investments. The app aimed to decrease loneliness among teens around the world by randomly connecting users from all over. He also created an app called Flogg, very similar to eBay, a bidding app build for teenagers. Ben also has some different beliefs that could make him look very smart in the future. He has never learned to drive and thinks that cars are big and ugly, and will look like locomotives do to us today in 50 years. If he could tap into the new modes of transportation, who knows where this young entrepreneur could take us.

Mikaila Ulmer

With a list of achievements that most 80 year old’s would envy, Mikaila Ulmer, the founder of Me & the Bees Lemonade, has achieved a lot in just 14 years of life. At only 9 years old she took the nation by storm by getting a $60,000 investment deal with Daymond John on Shark Tank. Then only 4 years later, she was features in Time magazine’s most influential teens of 2017. Mind you she was only 13! For those of you that may not realize it, that’s like being a first ballot hall of famer. The lemonade company is based out of Austin, Texas, and uses wildflower honey, flaxseed, and mint in their products. Her idea came from combining two things that came into her life at the same moment. Her grandmother sent her a recipe for flaxseed tea and then she was stung by a bee twice. She was scared of the bees and started looking into them. This is where Mikaila learned about bees and took a particular interest in saving them. Now the award winning product has swept the nation and the proceeds from the lemonade sales go to saving the bees She attributes a lot of her success to her parents driving her to work for things from a young age. If she wanted something she had to earn the money to get it. She has also written a children’s book on how to start and grow a business. At 20, I think I could probably learn a lot from this book.

Noa Mintz

Noa Mintz was only 12 years old living in New York when she started her first business, Nannies by Noa. The 2012 founded nanny agency that she thought of through her own family’s struggle to find a reliable babysitter. After helping her mother find a better babysitter, she started helping her mother’s friends and the idea just took off. The agency is almost like a dating app in which Noa matches up families and babysitters. She hires all of her own sitters, and puts them through a rigorous vetting process, including phone interviews, in person interviews, and background checks. All of which are run by herself of course. But in 2015, Mintz actually hired a CEO to run her own business. Can you imagine in being 15 years old and hiring someone to run your own business? She hired a 26 year old woman to run her company, and they even have their own office space in New York. Noa did this because the business was becoming too time consuming for her to keep up with her school work. That’s right, Noa is only entering high school, so the 40 plus hours a week that she is putting into the company will be too much for the rising high school freshman. Nannies by Noa grew its customer base over 300 percent from 2014 to 2015. The company also has a secure financial backing from Noa’s father’s private equity firm. Noa plans on graduating from high school before launching her next business venture.

Matthew Mullenweg

Matthew Mullenweg is a 34 year old from Houston, Texas and he founded the web software that we are currently using. That is right! Mullenweg is the founder of WordPress. WordPress is a website building software that focuses on accessibility and ease for its users. Matt realized that it was extremely challenging and expensive to build a website. Before companies like WordPress you had to go out and hire someone to build it for you, or learn how to code yourself. Matt believed that everyone should be able to create a website, whether they knew how to code or not. The philosophy behind the web platform is that anyone should be able to get a WordPress site up and functioning in less than 5 minutes. It’s customers do not care about the technology behind the site, most of them are just there to share their information. The largest takeaway that Matt has given with WordPress is the concept of giving customers decisions and not options. This may confuse some, but the idea is to make everything easier for everyday people to use. When you give every day people options, that they are not educated on, they get confused and do not know what to do. When you give people a decision there is no confusion and people have the ability to work. WordPress is an extremely easy to use platform with tons of different widgets to use for a million different functions (which you have the option to choose from). Take myself for example, last year I created a blogging site about the dying game of golf. The website had a blog section, a browsing section of all the courses I have played, and a section where readers could learn about me. I made all of this with only a couple of hours of work and no coding experience. I still cannot code by the way. Matt is also a college dropout, but do not get any ideas. He is a pretty unique character, considering the fact that he helped found WordPress at 19. WordPress makes a majority of its money from subscriptions, but also a small cut from advertising.

Adelle Archer

Most people may have never heard of Adelle Archer. She is only 27 years old and she is the co-founder of Eterneva. Eterneva is a very unique company that takes people’s cremated ashes and turns them into diamonds. For $7,000 a person can have their loved ones ashes turned into a diamond. Sadly, Adelle got the idea when her business mentor died of pancreatic cancer in 2015. Archer wanted to find a special way to honor her mentor, and upon a discussion with a technician she discovered that a diamond could be created from ashes.

The 8 month process may sound a bit odd. Adelle addressed a very unique niche in the market. Sadly, people die at many different stages in their life. In the unfortunate event that a woman’s husband passes away, she could get his ashes turned into a diamond and carry him with her wherever she goes. This does not have to be a young woman or a married couple though. An urn of ashes is not going to be passed down for more than one generation, but grandma’s diamond would last many more than one generation.

This is also a growing industry, in 2015, the number of cremations surpassed the number of burials for the first time ever. Adelle has changed the relationship with loss. The loved ones who purchase the diamond are updated throughout the process. The small startup company did $280,000 in sales last year and is projected $2 million in 2018.

LeBron James the Entrepreneur

Most people do not think of LeBron James outside of the professional basketball player. While some consider him to be the greatest basketball player of all time, not may consider the entrepreneurial skills he holds. LeBron not only markets himself, but also has his own brand and clothing line.

The number one thing that people should take away from LeBron James is his personality. First of all, he is never in trouble with the law, the media , or his teammates. I believe that respect in your craft and among your peers is a key to success. Unlike many athletes, LeBron James has never been into any serious trouble with the law. Keeping your nose clean is extremely important when it comes to marketing yourself. Looking at this from a prospective of marketing yourself, it is extremely hard to get a job when you have an offense on your record.

Secondly, LeBron James does an extremely good job at handling the media. He is very respectable and understanding that this is how reporters make a living, but he does not compromise himself or ever lose his temper. Just ask Tiger Woods how public image affects entrepreneurs. After his incident with his wife, Tiger lost major sponsors like Gatorade and Gillette, costing him millions of dollars. James also is a very good teammate. While he expects a lot from those around him, like a good leader, he realizes that they do not have the same talents as he does. This is something that entrepreneurs must understand, they need to rally their team or co-workers in order to see the vision that they see.

LeBron James is not just a phenomenal athlete. He is a leader that does things the right way. This is why he has a rumored billion dollar contract with Nike. He keeps his nose clean, his family close, and respects those around him. He even named coach Greg Popovich, a man who has beaten him twice in the NBA Championship, the greatest NBA coach of all time. He shows respect where it is due.
