Leigh-Kathryn Bonner with “Bee Downtown”

Leigh-Kathryn Bonner, a student at North Carolina State University and fourth generation beekeeper, needed somewhere to keep her beehive while at college. Unfortunately, dorms have pretty strict policies about what you can and can’t bring to college — and beehives weren’t exactly encouraged.

With the permission of the company she was interning for, she was able to keep her beehives on their roof. Shortly after, other companies heard about this project and wanted to be able to make an impact with bees in their companies and communities.

Bee Downtown soon became a business born out of Leigh-Kathryn’s pure love for bees. They now have over 250 hives at 40+ corporate locations such as Chick-fil-a, Burt’s Bees, Delta, and IBM are among a few of the companies that have participated. IMG_7506.JPG

The honeybee hives are installed and taken care of by Bee Downtown. They offer additional programming for their company partners such as hive tours, team building, and leadership development. The companies involved have access to exclusive events and contacts through Bee Downtown.

Not only is Bee Downtown helping the bee population grow, it is helping companies to grow through employee engagement and interaction. Bee Downtown is a great example of a company with a social mission that will impact many.

Bonner hopes that Bee Downtown will continue to “positively impact the environment, educate the public, and provide a turn key sustainability program for businesses.”

How DoorDash started on a college campus

Many unique and extremely successful businesses have started right on college campuses. Businesses like Facebook, Microsoft, and Reddit were all founded by college students. DoorDash was also one of these businesses.

Founded by four Stanford students, DoorDash got its start by trying to build “technology for small business owners and getting feedback on an app we’d built,” according to the website. They started working with a macaroon shop owner who expressed her frustrations with a surplus of orders coming in and a lack of drivers to deliver them.

Their new website was called PauloAltoDelivery.com. The team says that they didn’t put much thought into the initial design or look of the site, because they were just testing the idea.

The idea was obviously well received, with DoorDash being valued at nearly $74 million by its second year.

Something that I love so much about DoorDash is that they are encouraging an entrepreneurial mentality amongst their drivers. Similar to Uber, DoorDash drivers have flexible hours and are able to make extra money on the side or as a job. The company explains, “The impact we’ve had on local communities has been humbling: we’ve helped small businesses grow, offered underemployed people flexible work, and delivered delight to customers.”

DoorDash is a great example of a company that helps many different people at once — not only their customers, but also their employees and the small businesses that they make more accessible to others. It is important for a company to keep in mind their purposes for businesses and who exactly benefits from their activities.

The Honest Company

Jessica Alba is best known for her acting career. However, after experiencing her own personal dilemmas with finding beauty products that had good ingredients for her skin, she turned into a business woman.

“I created The Honest Company because you shouldn’t have to choose between what works and what’s good for you,” Jessica said, quoted in the “Our Story” section of the company’s website.

Jessica founded The Honest Company in 2011, which provides beauty, skin care, bath and body, baby, and home products — all created with the customer’s well being in mind. The company emphasizes transparency and safety throughout their brand. They want to be a brand that genuinely cares about people and encourages their customers to care about themselves, too.

Part of their transparency is detailing every single step of the process from assessing the materials for the product to production to packaging, etc. The Honest Company also shares their NO List, which is a list of over 2,500 chemicals/materials they will not use in their products. They are truly dedicated to the products they create and their customers can feel secure that it will not harm their skin.

The company focuses on using ingredients that are safe for your skin. They show their dedication to this mission by having their own in-house lab where they create their own formulas, so they know exactly what is going into your skincare routine.

The Honest Company is a great example of a company dedicated to transparency and the value brought to customers. As of recently, transparency is much more appreciated by customers. It is important to remember this when creating a company.

Rosie’s Workshop

Rosie’s Workshop was founded in 2016 by Blair and Jen Koss. At Rosie’s, you can find unique “lighting and home decor made with vintage finds,” as founder Blair puts it. Examples of the vintage pieces include instruments and old cameras.

Rosie’s Workshop is the perfect example of a business dedicated to design and storytelling. Each camera used for the light has a story attached to it. For example, one of the cameras is the same type that was used in one of the Harry Potter movies. When buying the light, one can read the backstory located near the camera. These backstories let the customer connect more directly with the product.

The workshops offered at the store are another example of how Rosie’s excels in the experience they offer to their customers. There are workshop opportunities for customers to make their own lights using their own cameras, which adds to the special connection they have with the products.

The name behind Rosie’s comes from Jen’s grandmothers who worked during World War II. The style of the 20s is very prevalent in the designs, in the metal and fabric chosen for the pieces.

Rosie’s takes the left-brained skills of engineering and combines it effortlessly with right-brained storytelling and design. Rosie’s is located in Ross Park Mall in Pittsburgh, PA. You can find them at www.rosiesworkshop.com to learn more about their workshops and products.

GossBoss

“I’m GossBoss.”

That’s how Cristin Goss introduces herself. Those three words completely encompass everything she’s built her brand up to be: power, confidence, and identity. Cristin is a brand photographer and visual storyteller working exclusively with female entrepreneurs.

Cristin co-founded a production company, Loose Canon Creative, in 2011. She worked as a marketing coordinator in a corporate office for almost three years. In 2016, she decided it was time to move on from the corporate world and start her own business.

Cristin not only produces beautiful images and videos for her clients, but she also provides them with the GossBoss experience. She greets the client at each shoot with a special gift, usually tailored to their brand. During the shoot, they feel like a model with their hair blown back by a fan and pop music playing in the background, along with a team made up of a makeup artist, hair stylist, assistant, and brand coach.

Cristin’s work in the corporate world led her to a passion of female empowerment. While men would be put in “power poses,” women would be posed with less strength. To empower the women she works with, Cristin asks them to strike the power pose.

I have been a photo assistant for Cristin for almost a year now and I’ve really seen how her business has impacted the lives of the women who hire her. It is inspiring to me to see the effort  she puts into giving the client the product and experience they deserve. She puts the highest emphasis on building up women and encouraging them to feel confident in their own skin.

During one of the shoots I worked on, Cristin flipped the camera around to show the client a preview of her portrait. Tears welled in her eyes and she put a hand to her mouth. “I didn’t know I could look like that,” she said. “I really needed to feel this beautiful.”

These kinds of moments will always stick with me. Cristin has taught me that being in business is all about the customer. The true value is in how you make them feel through the experience you create and the attention to detail.
