Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is definitely not what you would think of to be a typical entrepreneur. She doesn’t have just one great company or show. Oprah’s first big gig was her being on the local black radio station. The managers of the station were very impressed with her oration and passion on the station, which allowed her to be able to make her way up through the rankings of the radio station and than also allowing her to be able to make it onto bigger radio stations.                 Her appearance on the radio stations has definitely helped her career explode as a entrepreneur. She has been able to successfully build her own TV show called  The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah is also the chairwoman and CEO of Harpo Productions. Harpo productions is a multi media production company that Oprah has created as a subsidiary of her entertainment and media company Harpo Inc.

Personally, I think that Oprah Winfrey has one of the greatest rags-to-riches stories. She had a very rough upbringing, her mother was an unmarried teen who was a housemaid which as you can imagine did not pay very well at all. She lived in such extreme poverty that she was bullied in school because she wore potato bags for her clothing because that is all that she had access to. Now Opera has a net worth of over $3 billion, she is the richest african-american of the 21st century, and she is arguably one of the many influential women in the world.

Why Oprah Winfrey's Partnership With Weight Watchers Is Like 'Winning the Lottery'Oprah is also a very big influence with her journey with the Weight Watchers program. Once she was diagnosed with pre-diabetes she really started to take action on her weight loss journey. Through her journey not only was she able to be a great influence to many women throughout the world but she was also able to influence many of the entrepreneurial minded women because she was taking care of herself and she was still able to work on her career and her businesses.

Many people do not view Opera as an entrepreneur but she is a boss of her own life and she has been able to do many things for all of the companies, organizations, and shows/radio stations that she has worked with and for.

Sofi Overton – Founder of Wise Pocket

New Kids on the Block: Wise Pocket ProductsSofia had first found the inspiration for her company when she had witnessed her older cousin put her phone in her boot because she didn’t have any pockets in her leggings to hold it. Since her cousin was older and was an influence to Sofia, she decided she would follow her footsteps and try it out too. As you would imagine it was very uncomfortable. Ever since that day when Sofia was only 11 years old, she has wanted to make life easier for active kids and better for kids in need.

Sofia had made her first prototype by adding a pocket at the top of a sock, one that would be big enough to place a phone in. The idea was working great and her customers were loving the product, but Sofia was not going to stop there. She has also now created leggings of her own that have pockets large enough to hold your smartphone. Her goal for this product was actually not to only hold your smart phone, it can also be for younger children Shark Tank Season 11 Episode 10- Everything about Wise Pocket Socks and Leggings as seen on Shark Tank! Unknown Facts - TheNewsCrunchto be able to hold their epi-pen or inhalers. In todays day and age where there is a large part of the population that have a multitude of allergies that can be a matter of life or death if they come in contact with their allergen.

Sofia’s company also gives back to the many homeless kids in the area. When you purchase a sock from Wise Pocket the give a new pair of socks to a kid in need. As Sofia states in the About section of her companies website, “Wise Pocket Products believes that if you make sure a child has warm feet they will always have a warm heart knowing that their community cares for them. So be WISE like my logo says and buy our products! After all, Warm Feet = Warm Heart!”

Lily Born, Kangaroo Cups

kangaroo cupLily is a young entrepreneur that saw a need and filled it to the best of her abilities. Her grandfather was struggling with Parkinson’s disease and she began to notice that every time he went to take a drink he would always be spilling the beverage. Lily raised a little over $6,000 on Kickstarter to put it into production and the startup of her idea. She developed a three-legged cup so that the chances of being able to spill the beverage significantly decreased.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects the movement of the body. This disease can be very aggressive and progress quickly or it could be a mild case and take 15-20 to be to a point of immobility. The people that live with this disease struggle with every little thing that they do and Lily’s cup is eliminating one of those struggles. With her design, it is easier for someone to be able to less carefully place something down on a table and not have to worry about the beverage spilling. With her product, Lily is also spreading awareness of Parkinson’s disease and showing people that there are ways to make life a little easier for those that are battling the disease.

The design of this cup is almost similar to the design of a sippy cup for a child. This is almost done on purpose because the design’s of cups for children are meant to be simple and easy to use. There are a few different colors and/or patterns that are available in Lily’s cups. The Kangaroo cup started out as a ceramic piece, but with enough funding and support they were able to produce the cups in plastic. Overall though, most of Lily’s thoughts went into the actual design of the cup because that was the most important part to her.

Cory Nieves, Founder and CEO of Mr. Cory’s Cookies

Cory has been able to cater to the masses by grabbing their attention through their stomachs. He first got started with selling hot chocolate in his neighborhood in Englewood, NJ because he wanted to raise enough money to buy a car for his mom. “I was tired of taking the bus,” he says. “And I wanted to help my mom.” He was able to expand on his offering and have cookies and lemonade for his customers. Cory and his mom did a lot of experimentation with many cookie recipes with his mom over a few months and he was able to find the best recipe and sell some delicious cookies to his customers. These cookies became a hit everywhere they took them, to races and festivals and many places where there clientele nearly doubled.

As you can imagine, Cory and his business got a lot of publicity not only because of his amazing cookies but because he was so young and had such a thriving business that so many try and achieve. In 2015, Cory was invited to be The Ellen DeGeneres Show. After his appearance on the show, the demand for Cory’s cookies sky rocketed more than they ever had. Cory also made an appearance on CNBC’s The Profit and earned Mr. Cory’s Cookies a $100,000 cash infusion. This allows for Mr. Cory’s Cookies to be able to launch a website, hire some cookie helpers, and ship their cookies across the country.

Mr. Cory’s Cookies now offers 14 different flavors of cookies and has very high hopes of expanding in the future. Although Cory’s business has done very well for itself, after he has graduated from college he has plans of leaving the company and starting something new. He did it once, what’s stopping him from doing it again?

Brandon and Sebastian Martinez – Founders of Are You Kidding

“You’re never too old or too young to start a business… you can be 7 or 70.”
– Sebastian Martinez, the 13 year old CEO.

“If we’re not learning to give back then what are we really doing for the world.”
– Brandon Martinez, the 15 year old Director of Sales

#KIDSHELPINGKIDS

These young entrepreneurs have been able to live out their passion of designing and selling their own line of fun and funky sock that are able to benefit others throughout the world with the proceeds. Brandon and Sebastian have a “Kids Helping Kids” initiative that they are very passionate because they are able to give back to their community and give other kids a chance at enjoying their lives too.

They have a wide variety of socks for you to choose from, you could choose one of the design that is non-specific to a charity or they also have designs that they have made to reflect a multitude of their charity collections. Also, they have created a way for you to make a custom pair of socks for your own charity or foundation, all you have to do is email them to start the consultation phase. This a fun way of giving to different foundations because you aren’t just giving them a donation, you are also promoting their foundation and spreading what they do by just buying and wearing a pair of socks. In my own personal experience with this company, you feel a sense of connection with them because you both share a passion of helping others in a fun way.

Are you kidding has a wide variety of local and national charities such as Stand Up To Cancer, Make-a-Wish, Amigos for Kids, Autism Speaks and many others. The boys wanted to have a fun and unique way to give back to their community that someone would remember, and I think they have done a great job at that.

Adelle Archer, CEO & Co-Founder of Eterneva

“It’s in Tracey’s honor that I’m working to help thousands of families preserve their own loved ones’ legacies.”
— CO-FOUNDER ADELLE ARCHER

The way that this thoughtful and powerful business came to be is through the loss of Adelle Archer’s mentor, Tracy. Tracy was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer at only the age of 47 years old. Tracy was set to do many great things during her life but she was worried that she was not going to be able to create a great legacy for herself. Tracy was soon reinsured of how many lives that she had impacted by people sending her letters of how she had affected their lives. After Tracy’s passing, Adelle was the guardian of Tracy’s ashes and she had them turned into a black diamond ring to capture her sparkling spirit and for close keeping.

Eterneva was created for those that have lost loved ones to have the ability to have their ashes that have been turned into a diamond to either hang around their neck as a necklace or be worn around their finger as a ring. This company is not just mass producing meaningless diamonds, they are caring for each and every individual’s loved one’s ashes. This process only requires two tablespoons to a half of a cup of ashes or hair to be able to turn them into beautiful and meaningful diamonds. This process takes about 7-10 months to complete. Also, this process starts at a cost of $2,999 . This company has 5 steps to get this memorable and meaningful piece to you including the following:

  1.  Receive your welcome kit – You receive a package including a video, instructions, return postage, and the needed tools for you to send them your loved one’s ashes.
  2. A remarkable transformation – They isolate the carbon from ashes, which will start the process for the making of the diamond(s).
  3. A diamond emerges – This is when the magic of the process is truly revealed in the raw diamond that is created.
  4. Cut, polished, set by masters – Your diamond is cut in Antwerp, graded and engraved, possibly colored and set in personalized jewelry.
  5. An unforgettable homecoming – This is when your jewelry is returned to you.

Eterneva was named Consumer Startup of the Year by the Stevie Awards and was featured on the show “Shark Tank,” where it received an investment from Mark Cuban. Although Adelle has created a company, her accomplishments do not just revolve around her business. At only the age of 23, she graduated as valedictorian with her MBA in Entrepreneurship from the Acton School of Business, which is considered the ‘navy seal’ program for future entrepreneurs. She than spent 4 years as a Product Marketing leader in Tech, where she was able to launch major products to market with partners like Amazon, eBay, Square, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. Adelle has been able to provide her customer with an experience that they did not even know they needed in their life, she has made it possible to always have the ones you love right there with you.
