The Music of Today

In todays world we see a lot of competition between music apps. There’s Pandora, Apple Music, Soundcloud, and the almighty Spotify. Daniel Ek, the creator of Spotify has recently changed the way people use music apps. Spotify was the first music app to eliminate per song costs. Ek created Spotify as a subscription based music app giving consumers the ability to download as many songs as they want for one flat rate. Ek also allows a free version of the app to be used, but with a slight inconvenience, advertisements. Growing up, Ek created websites for different companies and then dropped out of school to work on different business ventures. He was a very good student and was always interesting in new technology. Ek is now the CEO of Spotify and runs operations. Ek is proud to say his company was the first company to allow free streaming, leading to the discouragement of piracy and illegal downloading of music.

From a very young age, Ek was always interesting in business and making money. By the time he was 18 years old he was managing a business of 25 people by creating websites. Ek is extremely driven and always wanted to do something. After he had become a millionaire he still wasn’t satisfied and wanted to do something else, then the creation of Spotify came about. Ek saw a problem and created a solution, Ek did not like pirating of music and didn’t like the illegal downloading of music so he created an app that is better than all others. He is very innovative in the sense that he created a brand new type of app that would change the face of music forever. Ek also took a huge risk by going against the flow of the other music apps and he ended up changing the way music apps will be forever. As well as taking risks with Spotify, Ek also dropped out of school, which is very risky itself. Ek is an extremely entrepreneurial individual and has a very entrepreneurial mindset when going after projects. Ek is never happy with the way things are and is always striving to improve them.

 

Facebook Founder

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook is one of the worlds youngest billionaires. It all started when he was 12 years old. He created a program for his fathers dental practice, he also created online games for himself and his friends. As Zuckerberg’s interest in computers continued to increase, his parents hired a private computer tutor. Zuckerberg often outperformed the computer tutor. Zuckerberg decided to take his programming to the next level and developed the early version of Pandora. As young Zuckerberg was developing this, he had many job offers from Microsoft and AOL, but denied all of them. Zuckerberg started working on the social media website, Facebook, in his college dorm room at Harvard. Two years onto college, Zuckerberg dropped out to focus on completing Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg is a very successful young entrepreneur and has very many entrepreneurial traits. One trait that is clearly visible in Zuckerberg’s upcoming is his ability and desire to take risks. One instance that shows this is that Zuckerberg dropped out of college to pursue what he was trying to accomplish. Risk Taking is easily one of the biggest traits that create a successful entrepreneur. Zuckerberg is also determined, he was very determined to persevere with his company and wouldn’t let anything stop him. This is also shown when Zuckerberg dropped out of college, not even himself furthering his education got in the way of his dream. Zuckerberg wanted to do things the way he wanted it and wasn’t afraid to tell other people no, he denied many contracts and didn’t want any help besides the men he was already working with. Zuckerberg is very inspiring and shows what is taken to follow dreams from a young age and still shows what it takes to run a successful company.

Plastic Clothing?

Turning plastic into clothing came from a brother-sister duo at Colgate University. Growing up right by the beach, the brother and sister noticed a waste problem. They realized they wanted to do something about the problem and came up with a solution. The duo pitched an idea to turn plastic bottles into swimwear, earning them $20,000 at a mock Shark Tank. After winning, they raised nearly $25,000 more, and ended up launching the company, Fair Harbor Clothing. The concept is very neat and is quite simple, bottles are broken down into polyfibers which are then spun into yarn and sewn into clothing. The duo started selling by going to over 200 Trunk Shows. Today, the business has grown greatly, Fair Harbor worked with the Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator to create board shorts and woman’s swimsuits using 11 plastic bottles and a little bit of cotton and spandex for shaping. 

The plastic to clothing design is very innovative and is a great idea. I think this idea is a great way to help with global cleanliness and waste reduction, a large problem in the world today. They take and use 11 bottles for clothing and the company is continuing to grow their inventory and options which helps to use even more recycling. I think it would be cool if they took bottles and other plastics straight from the ocean and helped to clean the earth by recycling and actually cleaning the ocean. However, the company is a great idea and is great for the planet and society.

The Controversial Vlogger

Logan Paul, the now 23 year old vlogger and business owner, has created quite a name for himself. Logan Paul is possibly the most popular YouTube vlogger and was an extremely popular vine star when the app was available. He started by making comedic YouTube videos for his classmates when he was in seventh grade. Gaining popularity, he then moved to vine as well. He posted clips that consist of stunts, comedy sketches and a variety of public pranks. He has recently ventured into his own merchandise company and acting. Maverick, the merchandise company Paul founded and named after his parrot, has recently started bringing in millions per month. He also has sponsorships with HBO, Hanes, Bic, Dunkin’, Nike, Verizon and Pepsi. This brings in around $150,000 per Facebook post and $80,000 per Instagram post, creating quite a bit of income for himself. He starred in small movies such as Thinning, Foursome, Airplane Mode and few others, and this is just the introduction to his acting career. Paul brought in nearly $12.5 million in 2017 and he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Paul is a very successful young entrepreneur and he will continue to grow as much as possible. Paul stated in a video posted in 2017 “And it’s so crazy because … I’m just getting warmed up”, he has bought a $6.5 million home, a Mercedes truck, and bought a school bus to pimp out as well. These are just a few things he likes to do and Paul has done a huge number of different things throughout his entertainment career. He is very driven and does not want to be told things are impossible. He also stated in the same video “Don’t be afraid to go right when they go left”. This shows how he is motivated and driven and he feels that nothing can stop him. This is very important because he shows that no matter what he is going to do what he loves and nothing will get in his way. He wants to be different and wants to create something great, and he is well on his way. Logan Paul is extremely passionate and loves what he does. Paul’s passion is simply a driving force for himself and he strives for excellence in everything that he does. He states he doesn’t want to be the biggest businessman or the best actor, but he wants to be the greatest entertainer on the planet.

Smart Scents

It seems as if entrepreneurs keep getting younger and younger. A 13 year old boy, named Hart Main created what would become the Beaver Creek Candle Company. The company started off producing and selling ManCans, a new kind of candle. ManCans are candles that have many manly scents such as bacon, campfire, coffee, fresh cut grass, and plenty more. The idea came about when Hart was teasing his little sister about the girly scented candles she used to sell for a fundraiser. With a bit of financial help from his parents they created the product, ManCans. ManCans is in approximately 150 different stores nationwide, and is very successful. From ManCans he has created other products for the company as well, including SheCans and specialty scented candles that smell and look like apple pie, cherry pie, and more.

Hart Main originally launched his business because he wanted to earn $1,200 for a bike to compete in triathlons. Hart has now surpassed his goal by a great amount. His business has given 100,000 cans of soup and $35,000 to 25 soup kitchens in four states. What is very interesting about this company is that all products are hand handcrafted, and each candle is carefully prepared, packaged and shipped by people in their workshop. They guarantee a high quality, long burning candle that pools evenly and delivers fragrance from the first light to last. This company has been surprisingly successful and they only plan to keep growing.

This young man, and his company are very inspiring to young people and he shows that entrepreneurship has no age. This young man started his company at 13 by simply noticing that candles are very femininely scented. Hart then created his product in pursuit of a goal, buying himself a bike. All entrepreneurial ideas start with a problem and I believe this demonstrates that concept perfectly. He noticed there were no manly scented candles, and wanted to do something about it. From that, the Beaver Creek Candle Company was born. As a person this shows that Hart is very goal driven, determined and innovative. Hart Main is also genuinely a great person and this is shown by his efforts to help soup kitchens by giving them soup and a portion of all of his sales. He is a great guy with great intentions and I hope this is an insight to others of what makes great entrepreneurs.

Ten Million by 21

Daniel Katz is an entrepreneur who launched the business “No Cow” when he was 18 years old. Less than three years later, the company has grown into a ten million dollar company. Daniel says “I’ve always been the curious, entrepreneurial, obsessive there’s-got-to-be-a-better-way type.” Daniel had his own little business at nearly 12 years old. Growing up he sold electronics, cars, snakes, and energy drinks and even a house. Daniels passion for fitness and his obsession for solving problems came toDaniel Katzgether at age 18 when he started No Cow. He, like many others have problems with dairy so he created his own non-dairy, low sugar products.

No Cow was started in 2015 after Daniel’s solution to stomach aching protein bars that contained dairy. He created low-sugar, dairy-free protein bars, cookies, and a variety of nut butters. Last year they received an investment from General Mills and 2X Partners in which the company changed its name, reconfigured packaging, and hired a CEO. Before hiring the CEO, it was a one man operation, Daniel was working 18 hour days, 7 days a week and living at the office. He has come a long way since and Daniel’s No Cow is now projected to book $20 million in sales in 2018.

Daniel’s story is very inspiring and really shows what kind of person he is. This entrepreneur is driven by his desire to solve problems and help others. By creating his products in No Cow he started by simply creating the products for himself and then moved to selling them to others with similar issues. This is a great idea because he has come up with a solution for a huge market, fitness is becoming increasingly popular and I’m sure other people had been looking for products like this. He is an extremely hard worker and is seriously committed to his job. Not many other people would live in their work office off of an air mattress and 10 for $10 cans of vegetables. As an aspiring entrepreneur it is reassuring to see teenagers are able to effect the world of business just as much as anyone else can.
