George Matus (18), founder and CEO of Teal

Now, he is the CEO of his own company (Teal) and has 4 full-time employees. Teal, a Utah based company sells drones and software. As a pre-teen and into his teen years, George flew many drones and was not very satisfied. He then made a wish list of what he wanted in a drone. That list eventually became what is known now as Teal Drones.

The Teal Drone can fly as fast as 70 mph and can withstand wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Matus claims that he as flown the drone as fast as 85 mph and is working on additions to bring that type of speed to his drones on the market. Teal Drones sell for $1,300 which falls in line with the standard pricing of that type of drone. Teal Drones can be used for anything from racing, to taking photos, and even aiding in search and rescue missions. Matus wants to market the product to anyone. He claims that his product works for experienced flyers and those looking to get into the drone flying game.

When asked about advice Matus has for young entrepreneurs he said, “The advice I would give to young entrepreneurs is to really find what interests you, and then it doesn’t feel like work.”

Daniel Katz, 21; Founder of No Cow

Beginning in his teen years, Daniel Katz frequently involved himself in a number of business ventures. He sold a plethora of items, including electronics, cars, snakes, a house, and energy drinks. After all of those ventures, Katz finally found himself a business that boomed. In 2015 he founded the company that is now known as No Cow. What began as D’s Naturals transformed into a 10 million dollar business by 2017 and changed its name (to No Cow). His business offers low-sugar and dairy-free protein bars, cookies, and nut butters. After making 10 million dollars in 2017, his business is projected to accumulate 20 million dollars in 2018. Another sizable money-maker came from an undisclosed minority investment from General Mills, establishing that No Cow has made a big splash in the food industry. Additionally, Katz employs 12 people. His operation is, clearly, not a minute one.

What is inspiring about such an entrepreneur is, obviously, his very early success. At 21 years old, Daniel Katz has been able to start a business that would take most entrepreneurs years to accomplish. His persistence in pursuing entrepreneurial paths is phenomenal. That persistence is a testament to Katz’s work ethic. He told that the beginning stages of No Cow included 18 hour days, seven days a week for him. All entrepreneurs should know that if you want success, you must put in the effort to obtain such success. Daniel Katz put in that effort, and he is now reaping the benefits.

“Get Your Textbooks Here!”: A new way to approach those burdensome costs

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis Perlego

Gauthier Van Malderen and Matthew Davis are two rising entrepreneurial stars in the world of college textbooks. Often, students are looking to buy used textbooks at reasonable prices, and, just as often, students cannot find used books at reasonable prices. Many have attempted to solve this problem, few have succeeded. Van Maderen and Davis, however, have managed to develop a profitable company off of this problem.

Their company is called Perlego. Van Malderen and Davis both already had entrepreneurial experience, prior to their team-up. Perlego can be likened to Netflix and Spotify, but rather than movies and music, Perlego is an online platform for buying, storing, and reading educational e-books. In order to bring in revenue, Van Malderen and Davis charge a monthly subscription fee, similar to Netflix and Spotify. Their company has already grown to twelve members, and their site has already amassed works from over 1,000 publishers.

Van Malderen and Davis have shown incredible insight into how this generation is so tech-dependent. With that in mind, their idea heavily relevant to this generation. So often, people have been transitioning businesses to online platforms. As college students know, textbooks are a burdensome expense without many cheap, online options. Perlego addresses that gap in the textbook market by offering a solution that makes obtaining multiple textbooks for a low-cost, easy.

I am inspired by this innovation because it is very applicable to my own life-experience. As a college student, books are burdensome, and this solution is very practical. There is a misconception that entrepreneurs have to have a break-through, unheard-of idea. This is not necessarily break-through nor unheard-of. Van Malderen and Davis took what they were experiencing and found a practical, not too far-fetched solution. Their intuition is inspiring and has prompted me to look into my surroundings for practical solutions.

Mobile Advertisements: Innovation in the Marketing World

Ed Hollands DrivenMedia

Creator of DrivenMedia, Ed Hollands (23)

One day, while in traffic, Ed Hollands had a “light bulb” moment. He saw three commercial trucks with completely blank sides and thought about how to utilize that space. The idea he came up with has made him a lot of money, 7,800 pounds per truck to be exact. On an average day in the UK, 55,000 people will view the advertisements that Hollands has placed on commercial vehicles. His startup, DrivenMedia, collects the, already mentioned, 7,800 pounds per vehicle plus VAT for a twelve month package. In addition to that, production costs for each vehicle is around 5,500 pounds. Hollands idea has proven to be very lucrative.

When questioned about his age, Hollands responded, “When making deals there have been some people who have doubted my capabilities because of my inexperience. In fact, the reality is quite the opposite, I am willing to bend over backwards to make opportunities work for my clients and investors.” He has taken on the stigma surrounding young entrepreneurs regarding experience and has flipped it on its head. Instead of focusing on the problem of inexperience, he has focused on his vision of innovating marketing in the UK. Traditionally, advertising done near transportation is on stationary platforms such as billboards. Hollands has innovated that industry by mobilizing advertisements. Companies now have the opportunity to advertise over a larger span of land, allowing for more people to view their advertisement.

Hollands has inspired me to think and work beyond the stigma that young people are too inexperienced. Rather than looking at that inexperience, I see youth as a new perspective to be brought to a situation. Clearly, Hollands displays self-belief in that he believes in himself and what he’s doing. He is motivated and is determined. His flexibility is displayed through his willingness to bend over backwards for his clients and investors. Hollands has found a niche in an industry for himself and has utilized his innovation to make money. His leadership and innovation are both impressive.

Rocking the UK Housing Market

Akshay Ruparelia, a 19 year old from the United Kingdom, has rocked the way people sell houses in the UK. Ruparelia’s site, Doorsteps.co.uk, offers a 97% discount on home selling. During a move, Akshay noticed that his family spent a massive amount of money on commission for estate agents. His site undercuts those costs. For example, Doorsteps.co.uk allows home sellers to host viewings, a process that, typically, is expensive for those selling through an estate agent. Doorsteps charges 99 pounds up front with no commission charges and has already become the UK’s 14th largest estate agency. Ruparelia’s innovation in the housing market has been dubbed the “Uber of the property world”. Obviously, the problem Ruparelia encountered included the excessive charges applied to those using estate agents, particularly regarding commissions. He moved to solve that problem after realizing the issue when his own family encountered those costs. Ruparelia’s problem-solving and visionary skills are skills to be admired.
