Not Before Tea

Henry Patterson was quite an imaginative young man, even from a very young age. When he was 5 and wanted some new toys, his mom suggested that he sell some of his old ones to buy a new one. Henry’s budding entrepreneurial mind then began to expand as he not only sold toys by themselves but with other, seemingly unrelated toy, in one case he says, “I loved doing this (selling his toys on ebay) and got quite imaginative putting Ben 10 on a tractor and selling him as Farmer Ben 10!” From then on, Henry knew he wanted to run his own business.

But what could a now ten year old do? The ages of fancy new tech startup owners and cutting edge online real estate moguls usually hover around early twenties to mid thirties, Henry needed to find something that he knew well and could do better than anyone. Then one day, he found it. What Henry knew better than anyone was how to be a kid! Looking back to the days of selling his toys one ebay, Henry, with some help, started the Not Before Tea company.

Not Before Tea sells items for kids. Small toys like animal blankets, stuffed animals, and children’s book (written by Henry himself) are all sold by Not Before Tea. Items for parents with small children are also sold, items like diaper bags and changing mats. Even room amenities are part of Not Before Tea, things like rugs and playful wall stickers.

Henry’s young but determined entrepreneurial spirit shows us all how powerful the right idea can be if you’re passionate about it and are willing to see it through with all you have.

Strongest Coffee in the World

In America today, at least 50% of the population drinks some form of coffee. That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 million Americans. Coffee is enjoying a lofty position in the hierarchy of mainstream trends. But coffee, having been consumed in the United States since its conception, is no trend. Coffee popularity is booming and so are the number of people supplying it. However, in a world dominated by Starbucks’ pricey lattes and Dunkin Donuts’ mediocre attempts to follow suit, as well as many others, how could a new coffee company ever stand out? By having the “strongest coffee in the world.” That is the motto of Death Wish Coffee Company. Death Wish coffee started as a small coffee shop in Saratoga Springs, NY, founded by Mike Brown. Mike created his own blend of beans and combined it with his own roasting technique to create his differentiated product. Progress was steady until Mike and his team won Intuit’s “Small Business Big Game” competition, landing them a 30-second commercial spot during Super Bowl 50. Since then their sales and business have grown exponentially. Death Wish Coffee were sponsors of the New York Comic Con, NASCAR, and the special Olympics, they event sent their coffee into orbit with the International Space Station. From their humble beginnings, Mike and his team have adapted and grown their product to disrupt their market through differentiation and will reap the benefits of their hard work, well into the future.

Are You Kidding?… nope not kidding

Socks. We all wear them (or at least we all should) and most are pretty boring. White tube socks are basically the sock equivalent of white rice. Who would want to eat white rice and ONLY white rice everyday? Likewise, who would want to wear only white, black, or brown socks day in and day out? Brandon and Sebastian Martinez grew tired of boring socks and decided to do something about it. Brandon, at the age of 5, began to design his own line of zany, wacky socks with his older brother Sebastian helping him to sell them. From their humble beginnings to generating $15,ooo in 2014, Are You Kidding and these two brothers have come a long way. But crazy socks and even crazier profits aren’t the only amazing thing about this young sock company, they also give back. Are You Kidding They have partnered with a multitude of charities which include: Autism Speaks, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics Florida, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, and The Live Like Bella Foundation. With a healthy business and the rest of their lives to continue to grow it, the sky is truly the limit for these peewee entrepreneurs!

Flying High

In the exploding world of novel technologies, drones have captured many people’s attention. Drones combine ease, stability, and a small learning curve with speed, agility, and often video capability that takes RC enthusiasts to new heights and gives creators new ways to capture footage.

One company rising in through the crowded pool of drone products is Teal. Teal was founded by George Matus when he was 18. Drones caught George’s eye when he was in middle school and he began to tinker, fly, and come up with a wish list for features not yet available in drones of the time. Now Matus is 18 and with $2.8 million in seed funding he has launched Teal into the sky of drone production. Teal and George Matus work as a perfect example of pure passion driving a business to profitability.

Nuts About Ice Cream

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream; except, its not ice cream this time. Its Al Ice!

Al Ice is an almond milk based frozen dessert that was founded by three millennial entrepreneurs: Buster Milani, Marion Noovao-McCamish, and Matt Billington. Since launching the product in 2015 the group of students, who call themselves Olelei, new flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, and berry have been added. The product sells in local food stores and they produce 150-200 units per month but they have plans to expand to meet demand.

The idea was launched when CEO Matt Billington noticed many milk and soy based ice cream-like products on the market but no products with almond milk. With so many dairy and soy allergies popping up these days this product fits right in with the needs of the market. The success of Al Ice has garnered several awards in addition to their sales. Al Ice took third place in the 2015 Young Enterprise Awards and second place in the 2016 Young Enterprise Awards as well as the group Olelei receiving the Pacific Peoples Excellence in Business Award.

With the market demand for sweet treats and allergen conscious alternatives, Al Ice could have a promising future and that is only helped by the youthful vision and determination of its founders.

Fire Department Coffee Burns the Competition!

For those who are not yet fortunate enough to know the rush of being a first responder, let me give you a short glimpse of it.

It’s two in the morning, tones* drop. The piercing scream of high pitched wails rip through your sleepy paradise and alert you that someone needs your help. While still half asleep you dress yourself and gear up as you hear the call come through on the radio, “Station 53, EMS 17, Station 50 for a working dwelling fire*…” Those last three words seal the deal. It’s go time. You and your crew jump into the fire engine and pull out into the night. Lights flash in the darkness and the howling sirens shatter the stillness that once was all around. After a long nights work the fire is finally out and you and your crew are back home at the station, exhausted. Good thing your shift only has another eight more hours left to go! Now if only you had some better coffee to drink than stale “donut shop” k-cups.

With stakes as high as life and death and work hours up to and exceeding 24 hour shifts firefighters, police officers, and EMT/Paramedics all need a coffee that works as hard as they do. That’s where Luke Schneider comes in with Fire Department Coffee.

Luke is a firefighter and paramedic for the city of Rockford and also a former Navy serviceman. He and his fellow firefighters set out less than two years ago to make a coffee suitable for the early mornings and late nights of a first responder. Luke and his team are, no doubt, very familiar with the anecdote I began this post with and they did something about it. Their coffee is roasted to order and shipped all over the country from fire houses to people’s houses. However, Fire Department Coffee doesn’t just make great coffee, they give back in a big way.

Fire Department Coffee has this to say on their website about their charitable efforts toward first responders and vets alike, “A portion of every order goes towards supporting firefighter and military charities.” As well as Schneider saying that Fire Department Coffee was, “built around the concept of giving back.”

Fire Department Coffee’s unique position of being a “works as hard as you work” coffee that tastes great and gives back has blown away the competition. Even in the short amount of time that they have been roasting and distributing coffee, they have seen success across the nation. Schneider and his team have truly set a fire that no one can put out!
