Spotify

Spotify was founded in Stockholm, Sweden by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. Spotify was developed in 2006 in response to the growing piracy problem that the music industry was facing. Two years after developing the software they launched and made music free for people who only had to listen to advertisements every so often. Ek and Lorentzon realized that there was no way to prevent pirating music with the way it was being sold at the moment, so they found a way to give the listener all the music they wanted, while compensating the artists.

Spotify grew rapidly and became known as the number one name in music. Spotify’s main rival, Apple Music, came into the market in 2015 and also launched a pay per month subscription to listen to music. Spotify was designed as a platform to listen to music, but has adapted and molded into different areas. Spotify has linked up with different services, like Hulu and Showtime, for linked subscriptions.

Spotify has innovated and adapted to stay ahead of its competitors. It started as a solution for people pirating music, and innovated and changed into the largest name in music. Spotify succeeds because of the relationship that they build with the users, building community playlists and events.

Travis Scott

Travis Scott is a secular rapper who grew up in Houston, Texas. Scott comes from a family of musicians and started playing the drums at three years old and continued to learn more and more about music as he grew up. Scott attended the University off Texas in San Antonio until he dropped out to focus and pursue his dream career. Travis Scott’s music started getting a lot of intention and suddenly, he was one of the most popular rappers. Scott’s story however, doesn’t end there and it hasn’t been a simple world of success with music. He showed an entrepreneurial spirit and mind with how he branded himself.

Travis Scott is very famous for his music, but he has used that popularity to expand into other areas of earning revenue and popularity. Scott has done several collaborations with Nike, designing shoes and clothes that have become sought after and very expensive on the resell market. His shoe designs have been super unique, even for Nike. Scott took a classic Jordan Retro 1 high and made the swoosh bigger, but then flipped it backwards and people fell in love with it.

Fortnite took the gaming world by storm and Travis Scott realized this so he seized an opportunity and performed a virtual concert in the game for more than 12 million viewers. This concert in the game was completely free, but Scott made a fortune off of his merchandise line where he collaborated with Fortnite.

Finally Scott also did a collaboration with McDonald’s and created a $6 meal. Scott was able to reach a much younger market with this meal and attract new listeners to his music. McDonald’s chief marketing officer Morgan Flatley said, “His ability to kind of see where culture is going and have a hand in where culture is going is really unique.” Travis Scott has time and again showed an entrepreneurial trait of always being able to adapt and find new ways to make money and attract new consumers to his brand.

ASRV

ASRV is a premium sportswear company that was founded by Jay Barton. Barton always had frustration with the quality and functionality of sportwear. ASRV has become a well known brand in the sportswear industry and it is known as one of the highest quality brands that you can buy for training. ASRV prides themselves with creating on new textile technologies to create the most versatile and unique sportswear on the market. ASRV continues to innovate their products with new technologies that relate to everyday needs, such as moisture wicking material for sweat, to their Viral Off, which is built to shed viruses off.

Barton says ever since the age of 9 years old he had a salesman mentality and loved to sell anything. In middle school Barton started his first “business,” buying beads from flea markets and weaving them into necklaces to sell to girls at his school. In high school he launched his own t-shirt company, making t-shirts to sell to his friends and groups at school. Barton launched two sperate ecommerce companies in his early 20s, a sunglass and a watch company. Neither company was successful however, because they were both lacking one thing, authenticity. Barton started his company, “ASRV,” with a whole list of “do’s and don’ts” for creating an authentic brand. ASRV launched six products to a super targeted market and did almost $1 million in sales.

ASRV sets themselves apart from all other major sportswear companies because they focus their designs on sportswear mobility and functionality with a streetwear fashion look. Barton says their company spends a majority of their time researching and spotting fashion trends outside of the sportwear industry so that they can keep innovating to match the needs of their consumers. The company has time and again innovated and catered to the specific needs of the targeted market that they have identified.

Garrett Gee Snapchat Guru

Garrett Gee, now 30 years old, sold his snap business to Snapchat for $54 million. When Gee was younger he had a smartphone and used a scan app which scanned UPC barcodes used to purchase retail products. Gee hated the app however, and decided to delete it. Gee searched for a better scan app that was more user friendly but couldn’t find one. Gee decided then at the Brigham Young University that he was going to make his own app that scanned Mobile QR and Barcode scanners called, “Scan.”

After a massive success with the app he decided to make a company with his classmate called Scan Inc. In two years they raised $8 million and upgraded the apps features and adapted it to customer requests. By 2012 Scan had been downloaded over 25 million times and generating $60,000 per month. In 2014 they decided to sell the Scan app for $54 million to Snapchat.

Gee has a very creative personality and loves to explore, these traits played a key role in him being able to solve a problem that a lot of people didn’t see. Almost everything on his list of things starts with the word, “creating,” I believe he succeeded the way he did because of this personality. Today Gee is traveling the world with his wife and three kids, while still not touching the $54 million in their bank account.
