Revelations Tee Co.

Revelations Tee Co. Was founded by Grove City student Eleni Kasianides during her work for a business class. She wanted to find uplifting clothing that was faith-based, but not tacky. So often in the Christian market, there are bright colors and flowers with common verses taken out of context. Revelations Tee Co. strives to be unique, the subtle branding encourages questions. The hope for the line is that wearers will desire to be intentional with their faith, and share when asked in public. The first collection is scheduled to drop on Monday the 21st, entitled “Pleasant Words.”

Above all, Revelations aspires to glorify God in the choices we make. To share our faith and go boldly into the world with love. Revelations stands for more than just the book in the Bible. It also represents the constant eureka moments we have with God and the ability we have to share those moments with others.

The circle logo encompasses several Easter eggs, for those who know to look for them.  The circle with an olive “branch” from John 15:5, and the “Book of Life” in Daniel 12:1. Even the three dots represent something bigger; the trinity. Symbolism is packed into every piece and special care is given to ensure theological accuracy.

As Christians, we are called to stand out. To live and act intentionally. Revelations hope to marry style and faith in its debut collection. The initial drop will include six original designs from Bible verses and worship songs. It will feature different styles and sizes to accommodate a variety of styles and preferences.

Johnny Cupcakes

Johnny Cupcakes, an odd name for a bakery. A nickname from co-workers, Johnny Earl has been serving “fresh-baked” T-Shirts across multiple locations for several years now. Johnny Cupcakes: A T-Shirt Startup That Gained a Cult Following Through Unique Marketing and Word of Mouth

The idea came when he was creating new designs for the rock band he played for. He came up with the first Johnny Cupcakes design, featuring a skull and crossbones with a cupcake replacing the head. After wearing it in the office, everyone seemed to want one! Johnny began selling t-shirts out of his truck, and focused on customer experience instead of marketing. A known prankster, he loved the idea of “tricking” people into thinking he was running a real bakery!

“Our bakery aesthetic is so convincing, that customers are usually convinced they are walking into a bakery expecting to get a cupcake. My inner-jokester still gets a kick out of fooling hungry shoppers. Cupcake or not, customers usually leave with a t-shirt or a great story. However, one April Fool’s Day we sold real cupcakes and hid all of our t-shirts!”

The Famous Pink Box

The iconic pink box has been taking over Instagram, TikTok, and the world. Crumbl Cookies was founded by two cousins;  Jason McGowan (CEO) & Sawyer Hemsley (COO). While attending Utah State University they embarked on a mission to find the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Thousands of dollars in dough and failed ideas later, they perfected their recipe. They opened their first location in Logan, Utah in 2017. Slowly, the duo added flavors to their menu and began to gain traction. They experimented with adding additional services, such as pick-up and delivery. All the while maintaining its mission to deliver high-quality cookies.

Back at college, they began to build the brand. The “Crumbl Pink” came from a neighbor’s classic car. They felt the pink was so recognizable, it was soon adopted as the official color. The box shape was harder. Using a college competition they entered Crumbl to try and find their ideal packaging. Some initial attempts were cake boxes, and one even looked like a mini oven! When they saw the pink rectangle, Jason knew. The design for the popular “4-Pack” allows four cookies to rest perfectly inside an oblong box. After the audience votes were in, confirming their pick, Crumbl had its packaging.

By December 2018, multiple locations had been opened and the duo introduced their rotating menu concept. Not only are they constantly adding flavors, but they are revising  and improving old favorites too. The pink box inspires the “Taste Weekly” trend. Customers will film with partners in the car, rating the flavors each week. From this, Crumbl gets direct feedback on fan favorites, while spreading the word about the delicious desserts.

Creating the Future of Publishing

Often Entrepreneurship students are asked to think outside the box. To find pain, find the problem and brainstorm a solution. This is the exact formula the creator of Canva, and Aussie native, Melanie Perkins followed. After struggling to create her high school’s yearbook she knew there had to be a better way. She believed that in the future, publishing would be streamlined, and connected through the internet for collaborative work. Adobe and Microsoft were not accessible to high school students. “People would have to spend an entire semester learning where the buttons were, and that seemed completely ridiculous,” she said in one interview.

She told her boyfriend about her idea, and it took off from there. Transforming her living room into an office she began to research and develop her idea. The pair created Fusion Books to start. Students could collaborate online and submit them to a printer. From there they would be delivered to schools all across Australia.

Next, Melanie and her boyfriend-turned-business-partner set their sights on a new goal, Silicon Valley. During a conference in Perth, she was invited by Bill Tai to San Francisco to give a second pitch. There, Melanie had more time to go into detail about Canva, although it didn’t appear to go over well. “I thought that he didn’t really like what I had to say. He was on his phone, and I thought that meant he wasn’t really engaged in what I had to say about the future of publishing,” she said. In reality, he was busy forwarding her information to his contacts. She had great success after building relationships within Silicon Valley.

In 2012, her idea finally came to fruition. Lars Rasmussen, a co-founder of google maps, took an advisory role to help find a developer. The trio welcomed new team member, Dave Hearnden. After their first funding round, they had 1.5 million in investments- they had completely oversubscribed. The Australian government matched that total in a bit to keep the growing company along the native Aussie shores.

The site went live the following year, and revolutionized content marketing possibilities. As of today, Canva has assisted in the creation of over 2 billion designs. They are accessible in over 190 countries and continue their quest to help individuals publish anything, anywhere.

Have you used Canva before? I love using it for everything between Instagram posts and stories to staying organized with school. You can check them out on their socials or visit their website to get started!

Taking Care of Bees-ness

“Playing by nature’s rules since the 1980s” reads a banner on the Burt’s Bees website. Established in 1984, Burt’s Bees was founded on the principle of simple living and sustainability. Burt Shavitz used to work as a photojournalist in Manhattan but moved to Maine to escape the concrete jungle. He sought a simple life in the forest. Shortly after moving, he discovered a wild bee colony, he learned how to make a living from the honey and became the local bee man. As he was driving one day, he picked up Roxanne Quimby, a hitchhiker, who also used to work in Manhattan. They talked about bees and the pair hit it off. Roxanne found a book of recipes and using what Burt taught her about the hives was able to make lip balm and candles. During the early stages, Burt labeled their beehives so if they got stolen by bee thieves they could find them again.

They loved emphasizing a low-impact lifestyle and preserving the nature around them. They began to sell more commercially and build the brand. Once successful Roxanne decided to sell her stake in Burt’s Bees. Her philanthropy encompassed both charities and the woodlands of Maine that she loved so much. She donated over 90 million to charities and purchased 87,000 acres of wildlands in Maine which she gave to the National Park Service.

Burt continued with his original plan. Living out of a renovated 300 square foot turkey coop which he transformed into a cabin. The brand grew and he lived off a settlement from the 1984 court case, where Roxanne sued Burt. He was quoted as saying he was more hurt by the loss of the partner than the brand. As of recently, Burt’s Bees sold to Clorox for $970 million. Although no longer involved with the company, Burt continued to do what he always intended: to live with the land. His trusty dog Rufus was enough company for him.

Although to some his story may not look like a happy ending, it is a beautiful example of pure intentions. Burt never wanted to be globally famous or make tons of money. He believed in living respectfully and by nature’s rules. His products are made with the best nature has to offer. His brand never caused him to be greedy or seek more profits. When faced with lawsuits he decided to settle and maintained his dignity. He did not slander his former partner. Burt shared his gift with the world and then went back to his beloved land. He continued to play outdoors and keep bees until he died peacefully at age 80. His values live on through the products and are trusted by countless families across the world and although departed, customers can still recognize his friendly face on the trusted yellow seal.

Have you seen these shoes?

Have you seen these shoes?

These are BANGS Shoes, created by Hanna Davis. After teaching in China, she noticed the green canvas work shoes worn by locals and was inspired to create change. She came up with the idea to use shoes to help workers provide for their families and build self-sufficiency in other countries. Backed by her family, she was able to invest in an initial shipment. She had a website, business cards, and a model. She paid the manufacturing fee and was delivered no product.  As she started over and began to save again, she worked as a bartender. One night she struck up a conversation with an elderly couple who took an interest in her. They began to ask her about herself, and Hanna began to grow uneasy at the targeted questions, not wanting to disclose the specifics. She took down their information and later that week, decided to look him up. The man turned out to be a retired VF executive. VF is a corporation that owns outdoor adventure and apparel companies such as Vans, Supreme, The North Face, Jansport Dickies, and more. Two months later, George and Gayle Darrah become signed investors and business partners.
