Academic earth

Richard Ludlow saw the potential of the internet becoming a learning place, and he managed to achieve it through his website called Acedemicearth.org. The non-profit website aimed at bringing quality education among students and that too free of cost. He rejected an offer of a full-time job and admission in an MBA course to come up with the idea of Academic Earth at the age of 22. Th website even offers courses from some of the most prestigious colleges in the world. Richard certainly proved that entrepreneurship is not all about the money and some good cause too. His example also shows that non-profit entrepreneurial endeavors are important as well.

Benelab

Jack Kim is a Seattle teenager that founded Benelab, a search engine that generates donations. Kim had made some search engines in the past and quickly learned the power of a search engine in generating revenue from little traffic. He says the search engine’s mission is “to make philanthropy easy and more accessible.” After establishing the “no adults” rule, Kim began recruiting classmates to be part of his “nonprofit organization with a startup vibe” team. Kim is unsure about what will happen to Benelab when he graduates, but his goal is to get the company to $100,000 before high school ends.

Main put in an initial investment of $100, his parents put in $200, and they all worked together to develop the candles as a group. The available scents include: Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Fresh Cut Grass, Grandpa’s Pipe, and more. Today, ManCans candles are in over 60 stores across the country and have sold about 9,000 units. Main will stick with selling ManCans’ inventory until he has to shift his focus back into school.

myYearbook

Catherine Cook came up with the idea for myYearbook when she was 15 along with her brother.  They decided to make the ute when the realized that the yearbook at their current school struggled to bring students together. At the time, neither Catherine or her brother knew how to program. They found a team of developers in Mumbai and sent them hundreds of spec sheets and pen-on-paper wireframes. they were able to launch in their high school in April One of the main advantages of this company was that there was no risk to starting a company while still in high school and living at their mom’s house.  The worst thing that could happen was that they couldn’t get anyone to join and that we would fail, but then they could still succeed in college. One of the main disadvantages was that it was hard to be taken seriously at first because they were still teenagers. Their site gained 1 million members within the first year.  At that point they realized that myYearbook was going to be a great success and climbed to 32.7M members. recently they have sold the company for $100M and are living very comfortably at the moment.

Fever Smart

Fever Smart is an app that monitors the temperature of anyone with a fever or other illness remotely from your phone. The app analyzes this data with a thermometer patch attached under the arm which feeds the data directly to the app. This app started with a college student named Collin Hill learned the importance of monitoring fevers first-hand when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma before starting college. During his chemotherapy, Hill had to constantly take his temperature since he was more susceptible to infections. One night he went to bed after measuring a normal temperature only to wake up a few hours with a high fever that took him to the ER. When looking back at his time being ill at Penn, He had realized there was a simple solution to this problem. Fever Smart was that solution which could help others in his situation at the time even more efficiently. After coming up with the idea he paired up with Aaron Goldstein who now has the position of CEO. Aaron worked with Colin while he was ill as his friend. Now the Fever Smart system is primarily helping with monitoring children temperatures from newborns to children with fevers. Ever since the product launched it has been praised universally. Along with that Aaron was named Entrepreneur Magazine’s college Entrepreneur of 2014.
