Ryan’s Recycling Company

Ryan Hickman, a brilliant, young, millennial entrepreneur, has a unique story behind getting his business started. From the age of three, Ryan was always disturbed by paper and plastic being left on the floor. Because he was so irritated by this, he wanted to take action. Because he was so young at the time, he started to fix this problem by taking action and picking up his family’s trash off the floor. Along with this, Ryan would go with his dad to take his family’s recycling to the recycling site. He made five dollars each time he would do that with his father for his family. Because he enjoyed doing this, and began making small amounts of money, he began thinking about furthering his “business” by offering to do the same thing he was doing for his family, also for his neighbors. By seven years old, this brilliant kid launched his own company that was known throughout his county. Ryan Hickman’s story is a great example of how even the youngest children have desires and ideas that have great potential and could turn into a successful business. Ryan’s business began with a small idea and turned into a successful business. Ryan’s story is a great example of how someone can take either a pet peeve or hobby and turn it into something more fruitful and successful. Just like Ryan, many young children might have a little hobby or pet peeve that could lead them to a greater idea which could formulate into something even bigger. Ryan’s story is inspiring because his business is both an ethically good idea, but also a brilliant one. After reading Ryan’s story as a millennial entrepreneur, I hope that more children would not be scared away by their age and will follow their passions and dreams because they could develop into something amazing.

Kylie Cosmetics

Kylie Jenner, a very successful millennial entrepreneur, used her social media platforms, as well as her fame through the show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” to advance her networking. Because she had a large platform to begin with, her cosmetic business launched quickly and successfully. Since her early teens, Kylie and her sister, worked alongside the retail store, Pacsun to create a clothing line that teenage girls, specifically, would enjoy. Building off of that experience of reaching teen girls through retail, Kylie started up a cosmetic brand that was launched in 2015 and took off because of her massive fan base. Because of her great interest in fashion and makeup, Kylie was very successful in her business. Creatively, Kylie came up with different names for the makeup in her brand such as: Kyliner, and Kyshadows. Along with coming up with creative names for her products, she also created tutorial videos using her snapchat platform to explain different makeup routines and products. A critical and interesting piece to Kylie’s story as an entrepreneur, is the fact that when she began creating her business, she chose to begin to set herself apart from her family by separating herself from them on special platforms in order to make a name for herself to expand her business success. Kylie is a brilliant millennial entrepreneur because she saved money and built revenue by not spending on advertising but rather used her media platforms to spread word of her business. She uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to formulate videos and tutorials about her business and products. By using social media as her main source of marketing, she can reach millions of people and therefore maintain a large fan base while also maintaining a very successful business. Kylie Jenner is a great example of a millennial entrepreneur because she strategically uses her social media platforms and fan bases to launch and maintain her business.

ManCans

Hart Main, a young boy and brilliant millennial entrepreneur, at age 13, took up the brilliant task of creating candles that were targeted toward men by creating more manly scents. As a child, Hart would make fun of his sister when she would sell feminine scented candles for school fundraisers. Hart found himself giving his sister a hard time for selling only feminine scented candles to those at the school, until he realized that he could do the exact same thing but do it for males. Hart mentioned his idea to his parents, and they graciously poured money into his business idea, and helped him come up with the name of his company called “ManCans.” The company began to rapidly grow and develop, and later reached 6 figures annually. Along with an increase in revenue, the ManCans were sold in every state in the country. I find Hart inspiring because from even such a young age, with a small dream, so much came from it. Hart took his idea to his parents, who poured money into his idea, they then began trying out different scented candles, and once they liked the scents created, they began selling to customers. After teasing his sister, Hart put more thought into what he was teasing her about and sought to fix the problem. He took the right steps to fill the gap, and now, at a very young age, he owns a six-figure business. Hart’s story proves that even from a young age, an idea can develop into something more fruitful, and for some, that could look like something as big as a 6-figure business. Hart’s story also should inspire those who have even the slightest nudge to create or start a business to look further into actually taking action and developing the initial idea.

Christopher Gray- Sholly

Christopher Gray, a man raised in utter poverty, knew he could never graduate from college because his parents could hardly pay and provide for his everyday needs. Although he truly believed he could never financially reach the day when he would receive a college diploma, it was still a big desire he had to get a college degree. Gray got right to work applying for scholarships and financial aid. Miraculously, Gray received over a million dollars to the college he wanted to attend. Because of his own personal experience, being blessed by the absolute generosity of others, and his heart for people in poverty, much like himself, Gray wanted to start up a platform that could help students who are seeking a college education but have limited resources to do so. He began processing ideas and brainstorming possible solutions to this ongoing issue in society. As a result of his brainstorming, Gray founded an online platform that assisted college students financially. How did it do this? His platform, called Sholly, assisted students in their financial barriers for college by helping them find the best scholarships and financial aid out there. Because of Gray’s personal experience and devastating troubles in poverty, he sought to help others in the same way he was helped through scholarships. Gray created Sholly to make the process of finding and achieving financial scholarships quicker, with larger sums of financial help. College is a decision of dedication. Even for people who do not find themselves in poverty, college is still a big chunk of money. Imagine students like Christopher Gray, who desire to continue their education but do not have the resources to do so. Gray is a brilliant millennial entrepreneur for his unique and intentional business model.

Brian Chesky- The Rapid Rise of Airbnb

Brian Chesky and his buddy Joe Gebbia were the creative founders of Airbnb who started their idea small, but it slowly began to grow exponentially over time. The whole idea of Airbnb all started when Chesky and Gebbia realized how limited they were financially. Living in San Francisco, they wondered how they could create some kind of business to help formulate a better income. They started contemplating and constructing ideas but came to the conclusion of starting a business where they would rent out air mattresses to the people in the apartment complex, or just simply to the people in the surrounding areas of San Francisco. They found this business idea beneficial because the hotels in the surrounding areas were often completely booked. Competitively, Gebbia and Chesky truly began their journey. They called their air mattress rental business “Air Bed and Breakfast.” As this small idea began to grow, “Air Bed and Breakfast” was later condensed to what we now know as “Airbnb.” As the air mattress idea began to grow, the development of Airbnb expanded to a greater idea of renting out houses, cabins and many other traveling rentals. As Airbnb began to rise in our society, it became some of hotel’s biggest competitors. In fact, Airbnb seemed to disrupt the hotel market. This seemed to be the case for the uniqueness which provided privacy, better experiences, and neater views. Today, Airbnb has a worth of $31 billion more than Hilton and Wyndham hotels together. Additionally, Airbnb is slowly disrupting the Marriott. What seemed to be a small business of air mattress rentals, became a shockingly popular trend of destination rentals that have changed society. It all started with two broke men who thought of a simple need for the community around them and ended in a multibillion-dollar business. This could be your story too.

Michelle Phan- IPSY

From a very young age, Michelle Phan enjoyed creativity, specifically using her creativity through makeup. Because she was too young at the time to do her own makeup, she would do it on her mother. Phan says she loved makeup so much because she believed it was almost like creating a story or narrative using her extensive creativity. Fast forward a few years, and Phan had to decide the route which she would take for schooling after high school. Her mother really wanted her to go to school to become a doctor or teacher. However, Michelle wanted to pursue her passions even if it sacrificed a greater salary. Pursuing her love and passion for makeup, Michelle committed to an illustration school where she could continue to use her creativity and imagination. Michelle had an exceptional work ethic which was exemplified through the way she worked her way through illustrator school. Michelle got a job at a restaurant during her schooling to assist herself financially. Eventually, Michelle longed to have a legit occupation. She applied for a sales position at Lancome (a cosmetic company). Unfortunately, Michelle did not get this job and began to consider other job possibilities other than the restaurant which would benefit her creative side. Phan started up a YouTube channel where she talked about herself and beauty tips for girls. The viewers appreciated the beauty tips very obviously, so Phan focused on cosmetics in her videos.
After many years of YouTubing, the head of Lancome contacted Michelle after seeing one of her videos including a non-sponsored Lancôme product. Phan’s video popped right up when the owner of Lancome researched a question about a cosmetic product. It was after this that the owner of Lancome reached back out to Phan to see if she would accept their job offer as official video makeup ambassador. Phan accepted the job offer and has loved her job since. Using her YouTube platform, she invented the idea of Ipsy in 2011. Ipsy is a community of people who value cosmetics and ship sampling bags to the subscribers of Phan’s platforms. Ipsy included most cosmetics involving hair, makeup, or skincare. Because of her commitment to her YouTube platform and subscribers, Phan’s company, Ipsy, now holds a value of more than $500 million today.
