Why Wait?

A 13 year old girl just recently debuted her clothing line at New York Fashion Week.  Isabella Taylor asked herself the question that every young entrepreneur should ask themselves after creating an idea; why wait?  This is a lesson that all of us have been taught with the creation of our ideas.

So many famous and very successful businessmen say that their advice to young people is that once you have that idea, persue it.  It was taught to us through the many lessons of Prof. Sweet as well as the guest speakers brought in.  As the youngest designer to be carried by Nordstrom, her fall 2014 juniors collection is now available in 10 stores.  She is quite the success for a 13 year old.

She is also a great example of someone who found something they were passionate about, and followed it.  When asked about her recent success she said, “From a young age, my parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams. They told me I didn’t have to wait until I was older to be my own boss and do what I love.”  So many of us could take a lesson out of her book.

Omar Soliman: The Garbage Man

Omar is a co-founder of “College Hunks Hauling Junk.  This has become a very successful business in today’s world and has reached the ears of almost everyone in America.  What this business does is exactly how it sounds; when you have junk needing moved and hauled away, young college men will show up at your door to move it away.

This business got started in 2004 when Omar won $10,000 from a business plan competition at Universoty of Miami.  I remember seeing Omar appearing on the popular show “Shark Tank”.  He was actually presenting a new idea called “College Foxes Packing Boxes”.  Ultimately, he didn’t end up pursuing the idea with the sharks but it showed how Omar has that characterisitic of “always be moving forward”.  This is something seen so much in the millennial.

Omar has a great story that so many others should try to follow.  He had an idea at a young age, then executed it through putting himself out there in business competitions.  This is such a raw story that exemplifies the entrepreneur.

Never Mild, Always Wild

Ross Resnick is the epitomy of a millennial entrepreneur.  The proccess that he went through to become what he is today is very much in line with what we have studied in class.  At 25 years old, he saw a big problem and discovered “pain”.  What he did was transform the way we eat and our perception on those food trucks parked on the streets in a busy city.  He created a company called “Roaming Hunger”.

This company tracks nearly 4,700 food truck vendors in major cities and gives you the information to access them on a daily basis.  He said this was a random idea that really took off with people. Not only does this provide the vendors customers with where they can find their favorite food, but it also provides a way for these vendors to offer catering services as well as even help provide financing for them.

Ross Resnick had a goal of lifting the social perception that comes along with the “street vendors” and he has accomplished that.  He has made them more accessible, fun, and engaging.

Jordan Urbach; the prodigy turned entrepreneur

Jordan Urbach has such an interesting and different story behind his success as a young entrepreneur.  He is a 22 year old that had made a name for himself early on in his life.  At just seven years old, he became famous for being the first seven year old to ever play in Carnegie Hall.  He had a talent for music, and more specifically, playing the violin.

At only 17, he was attending Yale and doing great things.  Just recently, he launched a video app called Ocho that apparently has Vine on edge.  This idea is revolutionary.  The app is a combination of the concepts from Snapchat, Vine, and Facebook.  What I mean by that is this; it is an app that uses 8-second video clips to tell a story.  People who use this app are able to construct profiles made up of these videos as well as respond to other friend’s videos.  It is a very new and developing concept.  The entire focus around the platform is the 8 second video (hence the name “Ocho”).

Jordan has had a very interesting life and will surely carry that into any business ventures he has.  The concept of his app is something that uses key concepts from other popular platforms, yet, is considered a new idea.  In a world that is rapidly moving toward communication via media such as picture and video, this app is something that can catch fire on the horizon.

The Goldston Twins

Ryan and Adam Goldston are two guys that epitomize the “Millennial Entrepreneur”.  They have become some of the most innovative and interesting minds to follow in the past 5 years.  Their product is one that creates greater value to an already valuable product: athletic shoes.  These two brothers, born and raised in Los Angeles, found a way to create a shoe that literally makes you run faster and jump higher.

They founded a company called Athletic Propulsion Labs (APL).  This company is now a global success.  In 2010, within 72 hours of their basketball shoe being banned in the NBA, they sold nine months worth of inventory.  Bottom line is this, their athletic shoe changed the game for all.

Due to the success of their shoes, they didn’t stop there.  Not only are these guys extremely innovative, but they have a keen eye for creativity and style.  Along with their shoe lines, they came out with an athletic clothing line (which has also found great success).  When asked where they get their creative inspiration from, they say, “From the eyecatching things they see each day such as high preformance sports cars.”

It’s clear these two have surely found their niche and continue to develope it.  Their market is very targeted which has brought them great success.

Jack Dorsey is no Square

There have been so many great and successful entrepreneurs in our generation.  With the amount of technology and innovation happening in today’s society, there is almost no limit to what the mind can dream up.  Jack Dorsey is known for many things, one of them being his creation of “Square”.  This is a product that revolutionized the way people do business whether it be at a small hot dog stand or paying a friend for pizza.

Jack Dorsey was born in 1979 and quickly realized his love for science and programming.  His most notable work, along with Square, was becoming the co-founder of Twitter while attending New York University.

Square is a product that had the ability to change the transaction world as we know it.  This small, square shaped device is something that attaches to smartphones and tablets.  It is then able to accept payments from credit and debit cards.  Even though this product was released in 2010, it is still a fairly new concept.  The idea behind it is simplicity.

Jack Dorsey saw the market changing and had the mind to see where he could take it.  He saw a problem among small businesses and solved it.  Almost everyone today has a credit or debit card but it could prove difficult for a one man business to accept anything but cash.  Jack Dorsey created this product for the purpose of making the lives of small business owners and entrepreneurs more simple.  Turns out, simplicity sells.  Square Inc. is now valued around 3.3 billion dollars which is not too bad for a 38 year old.
