The Beginnings of Under Armour

From an early age, it was clear to Kevin Plank and those around him that he had incredible entrepreneurial skills. Later, these skills were developed and harnessed to create a 4-billion-dollar company, Under Armour.

Some of Plank’s earliest memories were with his two brothers, buying cheap bracelets and t-shirts and then selling them for a profit on the street. Plank always came away with the most profit. As he grew up, another thing that Plank was very passionate about was football. To combine his love of business and football, Plank began brainstorming things that he believed he could change, for a profit. The problem he settled on was the weight of a cotton t-shirt under a football uniform after a game or practice; football players needed something that would dry faster and stay lighter while they sweat.

With his connections that he had made in his years playing football, support from his family, and a lot of credit card debt, Plank was able to get more and more orders. Word-of-mouth was a massive selling strategy for Under Armour because when one team liked it, five other teams wanted it.

Plank’s journey to make Under Armour is not glamorous or easy. He had to work hard, and at one point was at rock bottom with lots of debt. However, the vision he had and the smart marketing decisions that he used worked well for him. All of that combined with his hardworking nature rewarded him well.

Benyamin Ahmed’s Weird Whales

A massive topic in the business world currently is the subject of non-fungible tokens or NFTs. This is a market that is just beginning to really gain traction and become more popular. Since it is new, lots of people, including young entrepreneurs are taking their chances in this space. One of these entrepreneurs is 12-year-old Benyamin Ahmed.

Ahmed began to work on the code for his very popular second collection of NFTs in June of this year with some inspiration from another NFT collection and help from mentors and online tutorials. His finished product included thousands of pixelated images of unique whales called “Weird Whales”.

After launching this collection of NFTs, the collection sold out within nine hours. Including the percentage that he makes for every resale, Ahmed told CBC he believes he will hit $400,000 in gross profit by the end of this month.

I think this space has huge potential for entrepreneurs of any age, but particularly for a younger generation who has grown up using and being comfortable using technology to make an income, this will be huge. In an article from the New York Post, Ahmed was quoted saying, ‘“When people buy Weird Whales, they’re investing in me and my future,” Ahmed reportedly said. “If I carry on as I’ve been, I might end up like other tech entrepreneurs out there like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.”’ I think Ahmed will be an inspiration for other young entrepreneurs and show that although it takes some hard work and self-teaching, this will be an area where money can be made.

Catherine Cook and Her Yearbook

In 2005, Catherine Cook and her brother Dave were just two normal high school students without any kind of technology or business experience. One day, the two of them sat down to go through their Yearbook, as many students do, when they had the idea of combining their yearbook with the current technology boom. They proposed doing this by digitalizing yearbooks and putting them on the internet to create an interactive experience.

The pair decided to approach their older brother who was already a very successful entrepreneur and was interested enough in their idea to invest money into it and help them get the idea off the ground. I think looking back on this story, and their brother’s belief in this idea, you can see the foresight that these young entrepreneurs had to recognize that the digital age was coming and if they could harness that, it would take them very far.

The business began to grow significantly, and in 2008 it was the fastest growing social media site in the U.S. and had 11 million members. Over the years Catherine has been a huge innovator through MyYearbook and has been constantly brainstorming features to keep it popular and current. The most recent innovation the company has done is a huge rebrand with a new name, MeetMe. A huge takeaway that Catherine has mentioned from this experience is staying true to your vision, if you do this, no one will be able to knock you down all the way, and the growth of your business can be limitless.

Bringing the Beauty of Nature into Your Home-Dustin Anthony

Who doesn’t love having beautiful plants and flowers to liven up your home? What if it didn’t just flow with your décor, it became it? Dustin Anthony with his company BloomingTables aims “To bring the beauty of the outdoors – indoors.” These furniture pieces are beautifully crafted to show off a planter full of life underneath  that can be used as a functional coffee table, desk, or a beautiful decoration. The design is very simple and easy to use so that even people who don’t have a lot of plant experience will love having this in their home.

What started as a gift to Dustin’s girlfriend soon became a Kickstarter campaign and is now a full business in San Diego. However, things were not very easy for Dustin in running his business. After he made $40,000 dollars on Kickstarter in 2019, the pandemic hit. This resulted in the supply chain that Dustin was a part of becoming crippled. Although this was a set-back for the company, they were pleasantly surprised when business began to boom as people were spending so much more time inside and wanted to bring more life and beauty into their homes.

I think this is a really creative idea as it is a décor piece that people can interact with. Right on their website, BloomingTables describes themselves as being “…an innovative option to incorporate their favorite botanical scenes into their homes. This living furniture line combines beauty and functionality, in a sleek and modern way.”, and I couldn’t agree more. On the website they also go into detail about the several benefits that this table can offer. Beyond growing decorative plants, you can grow microgreens that are super nutritious and can be added to several different foods. They also discuss the additions and features that they are working on for future launches.

I really love this idea and this company for many reasons. This idea to me is truly innovative and can be used in so many different ways. Besides having it as a decoration in a home, this would be an amazing tool in classrooms and teaching kids (or adults) more about growing your own food! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the design of the table, the customization that you can have with it, and the fact that the company is still working on the product and innovating it further.

Cristin Smith, Saffron & Sage

Saffron and Sage, a holistic health club, was created by Cristin Smith. Before her journey into healthcare, Smith used entrepreneurial skills in the non-profit sector working with companies and entrepreneurs to enhance their businesses by connecting then to their target market. She also worked in the finance and insurance world in the beginning of her career. However, what really led her to starting and working on her own company was an unexpected health issue. She was told after visiting with several doctors that her condition could require surgery and life-long medication. But she was determined to do her part by researching and making changes in her lifestyle. She worked to seek out holistic health care providers and more natural ways of living.

After traveling for so long to several different specialists and treatments, Smith asked herself, why isn’t there a single destination for these treatments, and one that won’t drain my bank account? Smith decided that if there wasn’t one available for her, she would make one. That idea from 2013 has now been transformed into a thriving wellness center which holds a multitude of classes and treatments for people. This includes sound therapy, botanical medicine, breathwork, meditation, and the list goes on.

In a blog post on Saffron and Sage’s website, Smith discusses her daily schedule, her creative process, what makes her the best entrepreneur she can be, etc. Then she explains her biggest tip for other entrepreneurs, look for amazing people and create an amazing support/business team.

Beyond the unique health services and education that Saffron and Sage provides for people, I am especially impressed by the website and the online services that Saffron and Sage provide. Even if you do not live in the San Diego area, you can still get access to their online classes and some services through zoom. Another option for people who don’t have the money to sign up for their online services is the company’s blog. After scrolling through, you can see a huge amount of health and wellness information that is completely free!

Smith is a true entrepreneur, and it is shown through her persistence in finding a solution to the health issues that so many have unanswered questions about. Her approach of holistic health and natural medicine is such a prevalent topic in our society right now, where people are getting sick but cannot find help.

Jacob Zander, Spreading Positivity and Inspiration Through Footsouls.

Jacob Zander, a 23 year old from Santa Barbara, became a young entrepreneur after taking a college business class. He wrote in an article last year about how he developed an idea that he had been pondering through this class. At the end of the semester, Jacob had a product and a vision that he was ready and able to pitch to an investor.

Jacob’s idea of Footsouls, insoles for Converse, started when he was an employee at Trader Joe’s. With his friends, he frequently discussed that, although they wanted to wear their Converse to work, they always opted not to as they were too uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. To gauge initial interest for his product and idea, he asked his co-workers about it and sought their opinions. After this, because of his teacher, friends, traveling, and TikTok, Jacob’s insoles went viral.

Through his company and with his product, Jacob wants to inspire people and spread positivity. The product itself, a cream insole with the lettering “Feel Your Soul” written on it, was created to remind people every time they put their shoes on, to go out and truly live their lives. In addition to the insoles for Converse, Jacob’s company has expanded to creating insoles for Vans, clothing, and roller skates! Along with this, the company has a “Smile Fund” that takes a designated amount of every Footsouls purchase and uses it to give back to others.

What makes Jacob particularly creative, is his use of social media to help his company reach so many people. Before Footsouls was even born, Jacob filmed his entire creative and business process. Transparency was a huge goal of Jacob’s.  He wanted to show others his success hoping that they would gain the confidence they needed to succeed. Then, once he was able to manufacture the insoles, he began creating and posting TikToks. He used this as a way to advertise but also to give people a behind-the-scenes view of packaging and shipping process.

Since 2017, when Jacob was just beginning his journey with Footsouls, he has come a long way. With the help of mentors, friends, and social media, Jacob is inspiring others to follow their dreams and live every day to the fullest!
