SunSaluter

Some people set small goals that are reasonable for themselves. Some aim big. Like 1.5 BILLION people big. That is what Eden Full has set out to do and she is well on her way. While in High school Eden came up with the idea to build a solar panel that would rotate with the movement of the sun to maximize efficiency, using thermal expansion, instead of traditional electric motors, which make it low cost and low maintenance.

While applying to Princeton, she mentioned her idea, the SunSaluter, got in, and soon started working with a professor to make the impact that she had always dreamed off. Although, the trial run did not go as planned. The prototype failed to live up to expectation on while being implemented in Kenya. But Eden didn’t let this deter her. Instead she used her experience to learn how to help the people of Kenya better and understand the work that was needed to get her product up to par. She applied for funding, won scholarships and found a company, Rosseicollis Technologies Inc. to help with construction and engineering. To date, Eden Full has helped over 6,000 people get clean water and power and is still working on helping more. Who know, maybe she will hit her goal of 1.5 billion in her lifetime with the right help.

Joe Gebbia was living in an apartment in San Francisco was struggling for some extra cash. It dawned upon him to rent out a bed in his apartment to people looking for a place to stay at a much lower rate than traditional hotels and get to explore the country with without breaking the bank. He and his friend, Brian Chesky, thought they may have stumbled onto something and wanted to explore the possibilities on a bigger scale. Thus Airrbnb was formed; a company that uses regular everyday people’s homes to create amazing experiences and opportunities to explore the world.  People can rent out a bed, room, or even an entire house if they wanted to for a short period of time or even for a year.

The company has become traveler’s best friend while on a budget. Who wouldn’t want to stay in a rustic little cottage in Ireland next to a sheep farm? You can even stay in a castle if you want! A

CASTLE! Now, seven years later, there are over 1,500,000 listings in over 190 countries. Joe has spoken globally about both entrepreneurship and design, and received numerous distinctions such as the Inc. 30 under 30 and Fortune 4 0 under 40. Airbnb is a great example of taking an idea that has been around for a while and turning it into something novel and new. Airbnb has reinvented the idea of traveling.

PaperKarma1

Have you ever opened your mailbox at home and for a second gotten a little excited thinking that you had mail, but on further inspection realized it was only junk mail? Not only is it an annoyance, but it is a complete waste of paper. With PaperKarma, you can eliminate this problem. Founded by Brenda Ribera and Sean Mortazavi, PaperKarma is an app that can help you eliminate paper waste and lower the clutter in your mailbox.

The founders of PaperKarma saw a problem: each U.S. household receives about 850 pieces of unwanted mail per year. For every piece mail you want, you receive about 20 unwanted ones. This adds up to more than 100 billion pieces of mail per year for the United States. That is a huge amount of paper waste that could be avoided especially in an age where paper products are dying. Almost everything is and can be electronic, so junk mail is even more of a waste.

PaperKarma

PaperKarma works by you taking a picture of your junk mail, sending the picture through the app and then PaperKarma unsubscribes you and takes you off the mailing list. It’s that easy. So whether you care about your carbon footprint, or you just want to stop getting those ridiculous amount of junk mail, PaperKarma will definitely make your mail a little less cluttered.

FITGuard

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “sports related injuries?” Concussions are the first thing that many people think of. There are about 3.8 million sports-related concussions per year, and that’s with only 47 percent of the athletes that have concussion symptoms actually reporting so. Because of this lack of reporting, serious neurocognitive injuries can occur, especially at the high school level a large portion of which can be attributed to the lack of technology available compared to the college or professional level.

Founded in 2013, Force Impact Technologies set out to help eliminate the lack of reporting and lower the risk of neurological damage by creating the FITGuard, a head-injury awareness mouthguard. Founders, Anthony Gonzales and Bob Merriman were college athletes who witnessed the impact of concussions first hand, and with their degrees, decided to make a product that would help them and their fellow teammates to be more aware of each hit that occurred during an athletic competition.

With the technology embedded into the FITGuard, the mouthguard can detect rapid changes in acceleration that breach a predetermined threshold and alert the user through flashing of LED light or by a free app that connects through Bluetooth. Athletes or parents could access this information in real time or even coaches could have their entire team sync to the same cloud and could monitor all their players during sporting events. The FITGuard is only a small glimpse into how technology can and will be integrated into sports in the future.
