Kiel James Patrick

Kiel James Patrick spent years exploring the East Coast and its vintage clothing stores, and antique shops. Kiel found interest in the age old quality and American made goods, which became an inspiration for the Kiel Jame Patrick brand. Combining timeless patterns and designs Kiel began creating hand-made bracelets and belts, using supplies from local businesses in Rhode Island. Kiel has made sure that every one of his products are one hundred percent USA made. Belts and bracelets grew into bags, boat shoes, necklaces, earrings, clothing and much more. From craft shows for fun to selling in Brooks Brothers, KJP has consistently been growing and developing, becoming more recognizable and known for quality, style and integrity.

Rent the Runway

If you could wear a $2,000 Badgley Mischka gown to a formal, would you? I would! In fact I actually did, all because of Jenn Hyman and her ingenious creation of Rent The Runway. In 2009, Hyman created a company that changed the formal, prom, wedding and party game. Rent The Runway holds a warehouse full of designer dresses for women across the country to rent and wear. The dresses range from completely casual to full on wedding dresses. The system is simple. Find a dress online, or in a RTR Store that you love. Pick the dates you want the dress, and wait for your dresses to arrive! Rent The Runway has thousands and thousands of dresses to choose from along with pictures and reviews from other women that help you find a dress that will flatter you and your body type. Recently, RTR added more components to their site. You can complete any outfit by renting necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even handbags! What do you do with the worn, dirty dress that you looked stunning in? Simply stuff everything back into the garment/shipping bag and send it back to RTR for FREE! Rent The Runway allows women to feel like a million dollars (literally), save money on dresses that may have been stashed in a closet and never worn again, and never have to leave their desks to shop for them!

Rocksbox

Recently, Meaghan Rose created Rocksbox; a different but relevant jewelry shopping experience. Rocksbox began with Meaghan’s own jewelry collection. As she was lending out her pieces online, she quickly saw the need for a simple and easy jewelry shopping process. From women in the business world to stay at home mothers, no busy person wants to spend their free time being stressed on keeping their accessories up to date and spending hundreds on high quality jewelry.

To be a Rocksbox “Shine Insider”, women sign up at rate of $19 a month. With the membership, women are able to rent an unlimited amount of jewelry, borrowing 3 pieces at a time, and swapping the sets at anytime. The sets are high quality and designer jewels averaging at around $200 a piece. Rocksbox also has an option to buy any of the jewelry that they rent, and members get $10 monthly towards a purchase of accessories.

Women of Rocksbox can wear new styles all the time without spending tons of money or time hunting through boutiques and department stores. Meaghan Rose and Rocksbox are definitely making an impact in the style world!

Sskeko Designs: Liz Bohannon

Sseko-Designs-logo

In 2008, fresh out of college, Liz Bohnannon moved to Uganda in hopes of making a difference for women and their lack of opportunity and funding for education. Instead of creating a charity for the women in poverty, Bohannon wanted to make a long term difference; teaching women life skills and how to survive on their own.  After several ideas and attempts of creating products and systems to help the women, Sseko Designs was born.

After creating a final prototype of the Sseko Sandal, Liz and her husband moved back to the United States, hopeful to sell their sandals to boutique owners. Each Sseko Sandal included a pair of bases and a set of ribbons allowing customers to tie and style the shoes in hundreds of different ways.

In February, Sseko was featured on ABC’s Shark Tank. “Unsuccessful”, Liz and her husband left the show with no support from the the Sharks, being told that their company mentality was crazy and essentially would not work.

The opposite happened. After being on the show, the company grew tremendously. One Sseko woman responded to the Sharks by saying “We don’t need that rich Mizungu (white man) to succeed. We’re team Sseko. We’ll do it without him.” Since Sseko began, the company has grown from three to forty seven employees. A new workshop was built, five times larger than the first, and forty two women have since gone through University. Sseko women also receive seventeen different educational classes while working  including family planning, first aid, budgeting, and  interview skills. Sseko has gone from one product line to five, and now also has 350 retailers around the world. In addition to being featured on Shark Tank, Bohnanon and the Sseko label has been covered by Fox Business, Vogue, The Huffington Post, People magazine and several others.
