LaunchKey

Do you ever get tired of remembering all the different passwords you have? Ever feel frustrated with having to come up with a new password for each social media site you join? Well, Geoff Sanders, Devin Egan, and Yo Sub Kwon, the founders of Launch Key, definitely understand your pain. That’s what they created LaunchKey, a smartphone app that replaces all your passwords and  lets users sign into a site with a username alone. The software sends a signal to the user’s smartphone and he or she completes the sign-in by swiping the smartphone screen. download (6)

LaunchKey not only eliminates how many passwords people have to remember, but also helps with security breaches, particularly hacking. And while  there are some smartphone-based solutions that send a code to the phone that you must type in, LaunchKey has improved this because the LaunchKey app realizes you have your phone and sends you a message that is acknowledged with a swipe. And if someone else is trying to sign into your account, you can know that too! Also, it’s not for websites alone,it can actually work with anything that connects to the Internet. As Sanders said, “In theory, you could someday start a car with LaunchKey.”

Sanders, Egan, Yo Sub Kwon, won first place and best design with the LaunchKey concept at the Startup Weekend Las Vegas competition in July 2012. That same week, hackers had posted nearly half a million Yahoo passwords online. The team also got $750,000 in start-up funds from Vegas Tech Fund, founded by Tony Heisch and other Zappos.com execs. The LaunchKey App is now available for free in the Apple App Store and an Android version is coming soon! launchkey-pano_25641

Leap Motion

Have you ever wanted to control your computer simply by waving your hands in the air? David Holz and Michael Buckwald definitely have. That’s why they founded Leap Motion, a company which makes technology that lets users operate a computer by moving their hands in front of the screen. Users simply purchase a compact controller, (it’s only slightly larger than a USB flash drive) and then download Leap’s software. Inside the controller are infrared cameras that track all 10 fingers within the eight cubic feet of space in front of your computer. As long as a user’s hands remain within that space, he or she can slash at fruit, move objects, draw, paint, browse the Web, and much more. images (3)

In 2008, Holz started developing the software  due to his frustrations with the limitations of the mouse and keyboard. He spent nearly five years developing the cameras in the controller and eventually developed a prototype. He then teamed up with Buckwald, who was not only an entrepreneur, but also a childhood friend.

Although the prototype was not ideal for giving a demo to potential investors, (it was huge and took more than an hour to set up) Holz and Buckwald had one amazing investor- Bill Warner, the founder of Avid Technology. After investing $25,000, Warner worked with Holz and Buckwald for two years. Warner helped them build their start-up and develop a product that they would want to use. “There was real money being dangled to do military work,” says Warner. “But I encouraged the guys to think of who they love, and to make the technology for them–to build a direct relationship with those people rather than take the easy way.”

Things ended up working out well for Holz and Buckwald. They raised about $45 million from a group of investors and venture capital firms. Also, Leap Motion has grown from just 12 employees a year ago to 80-plus. Leap’s technology launched in Best Buy stores in late July and the company accepted $10 million in pre-sales from its web site, without any advertising.

ModCloth: eCommerce at its best!

images (2)ModCloth is an online retailer that specializes in vintage , vintage-inspired and indie clothing, accessories and decor. ModCloth was started in Pittsburgh in 2002 by Susan Gregg-Koger and her then-boyfriend, now-husband, Eric Koger. Eric started a web development business in 2000 and used his knowledge to help Susan launch an eCommerce site for the amazing pre-worn vintage items she’d found at vintage sales. The company began in the Kogers’ college house basement at Carnegie Mellon where they employed a student part-time to help with packaging and shipping. It now has, however, 450 full-time employees across offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. It is one of the fastest-growing fashion and home eCommerce ventures to emerge in the past decade and the company did more than $100 million in sales last year.download (2)

ModCloth is extremely popular with fashion bloggers, vintage lovers, and online shoppers in general because there are up to 50 new products a day on the ModCloth website. That fresh content is essential to making browsing the ModCloth site a daily habit. Also, ModCloth’s Be the Buyer program allows customers to vote on which designs are created and sold by ModCloth. Combine all this with ModCloth’s great customer service and it’s no wonder that in 2010, ModCloth was  named the #2 Fastest-Growing Private Company in America according to Inc. It was also named to Forbes 30 under 30 list for Technology in 2011 and for Art and Style in 2012. The Accidental Millionaire: Michelle Phan

imagesMichelle Phan has always had a fascination with art and cosmetics. Rather than pursue a career as a doctor as her mother wanted her to, Phan decided to pursue her fascinations instead. The result was her becoming  the most recognizable face in the YouTube beauty community as well as an accidental millionaire.

In 2006, Michelle Phan started a personal blog in which she discussed different makeup tutorials. After receiving  requests for further instruction, she began posting tutorial vlogs on Xanga under the username Ricebunny and  began publishing on YouTube in May, 2007. Although they were uncommon at the time, Phan implemented some special effects and voice-over narration in her videos. These unique styles proved to be quite popular and Phan’s video’s became viral after they  were featured on Buzzfeed in 2009 and 2010.In particular, her “Lady Gaga Poker Face Tutorial and Lady Gaga Bad Romance Look brought her over a million subscribers.images (1)

After noticing that Phan included some of their products in her beauty product review videos, Lancome made Phan their official video make-up artist. In 2011, Phan co-founded a monthly beauty subscription  service (now called Ipsy) that is filled with various beauty products that are associated to tutorials on her website. Phan also became a YouTube advertising partner and launched FAWN, a YouTube MCN (multi-channel network) in 2012. In May 2013, Ipsy hosted Generation Beauty, a conference in Los Angeles for beauty bloggers and online beauty content creators. And in August, 2013, Phan in conjunction with the L’Oreal Group launched a new cosmetic line called EM Michelle Phan.

Humdinger Wind Energy

Shawn FrayneIn 2004,  Shawn Frayne took a trip to a small fishing village near the cost of Petite Anse, Haiti. This village  was not connected to an electrical grid, and the only lighting available was diesel-powered or kerosene-based. A member of an MIT team,Shawn realized that instead of using  kerosene lamps, white LEDs powered by a very inexpensive wind generator might be able to better light homes and schools in the area. Turbine technology, however, is too inefficient at these scales to be a viable option, something Shawn discovered after trying to design this affordable, turbine-based wind generator. Under these difficult constraints of cost and local manufacture,  Shawn invented the world’s first non-turbine wind generator, the Windbelt generator.

The small tabletop proof-of-concept of the world’s first membrane-based, non-turbine generator has since undergone several transformations.  These include: the  microBelt, the Windcell, and most recently the Windcell Panel.  These new inventions are taking wind power into places and applications previously inconceivable. Shawn and his team are aiming to make the Windbelt one of the key tools of energy harvesting in the 21st century.

From Trash to Musical Treasure: The Inspiring Landfill Harmonic

Favio-Chavez-

How it began: Several years ago, Favio Chávez was working at a massive landfill south of Asunción, Paraguay. He became  friends with the families who live among the trash and work as recyclers.  Chávez then figured out how to make musical instruments using the scraps of dirty oil cans, jars, wood, forks and other junk in the Cateura Landfill. He also created an orchestra with local kids as the members.

Chávez  is a musician with experience forming classical ensembles. He initially put  a few instruments together for the children who had nothing to play with. He was not planning on creating a brass and string section from scratch. After hearing the good sound that the instruments produced, however, he decided to perfect them. Using the help of a resident garbage picker named “Cola,”  Chávez constructed smooth sounding, built-to-scale cellos and violins, an astonishing feat considering that he used only basic carpentry skills and scraps from the landfill.

Landfill Orchestra Chávez’s orchestra now has 30 members and although is has been a big commitment for the children and their families, they have received worldwide recognition. They’ve performed several places such as Argentina, Brazil, and Germany. A U.S based film maker even made a documentary about them and their inspiring story.

The children and  Chávez  say that ultimately the goal of the music project is to educate the public about a world problem that they feel shouldn’t be ignored. Were it not for Chávez and the Landfill Harmonic, these children would never get a chance to learn how to play an instrument or be a part of an orchestra. To many of these children, music is a form of hope and a true joy. It is the best part of their lives.

“I made this orchestra to educate the world and raise awareness,“ says Chávez. “But it’s also a social message to let people know that even though these students are in extreme poverty, they can also contribute to society.  They deserve an opportunity.”
