Lyft: Ubers replacement

Uber has 4 Million users monthly. Everyone knows who they are and they are definitly #1 in their business. So how is it even possible to compete with them? The answer is by doing something different and taking advantage of slumps in competition.

In the past year, Uber has been struggling with scandals over the past year. However, this does not change the way Lyft is trying to compete with their biggest competitor. Lyft has set itself apart from Uber by being the more environment friendly and less sketchy company. Lyft offers a round up option, which essentially, for those who select the option, it will simply round up their total by the dollar and then donate the pocket change to a charity of their choice.

The biggest point that proves Lyft will be Ubers replacement is their vision. Lyft has guarantied that in 5 years time, they will be a driver less and self navigating car service. annoying uber drivers are the worst, whether it is their music taste, awkward behavior, or just suspicious behavior and untrustworthy demeanor. Imagine if there were no driver and the passenger could control the music, talk about things in private, and no young women ever had to worry about their safety.

John Zimmer saw this gap in the business and so has began taking advantage of it. Wile the technology in the USA is not yet to the point of making this practical, it shows the general creativity and vision of this young millennial entrepreneur.

TenTree: Re-Forestation One Step at a Time

Everyone has heard the phrase “deforestation” at one point or another throughout their lives. Time and time again people choose not to think about it because in America, trees and shade are abundant and easy to acquire. This is not the case in many third world countries, especially those near the equator. Millions of people live without the shade and environment of trees.

TenTree seeks to get rid of this issue with a simple charity. For every item purchased from them, ten trees are planted in one of over ten countries. The items they sell range from hoodies and beanies to pants and socks. They have summer and winter clothing, all with a unique design from TenTree. All the products are made by TenTree and are ensured to be environmentally friendly since that is their main goal, the environment.

While the prices of the merchandise is slightly lofty, it is easy to justify the increase with the charity. Instead of just buying an expensive article of clothing for yourself, with every purchase you are changing lives. TenTree even offers a unique tracking system so as to let you actually see how you are changing the world.

Something that TenTree does a great job is giving their products visible meaning in the trees they plant. So many charities just ask you to donate towards a cause, and bye bye money, you rarely see how your personal donation helped. TenTree provides you with the exact number of trees you’ll be providing and help you track the growth so you can see exactly where your money went. It gives the donors more of a sense that they are doing something.

Tegu: The Best of Both Worlds

“You cannot teach creativity; all you can do is let it blossom, and it blossoms in play.” Recognizing that children can build motor skills, creativity, sharing, and even fractions and scale simply though play, Tegu set forth on a mission to create a toy with hidden lessons. The wooden building blocks come in various shapes, all of which are set to a 30mm scale so as to insure that they all work with one-another, are designed with strategically placed magnets on the inside completely concealed from sight. With this cool feature, children can use the blocks to build animals, cars, houses and much more. However this is not the most compelling fact about Tegu.

The company is based out of Honduras and has quite a unique story. Setting it apart from both charity’s and multi-million dollar company’s, Tegu took a unique approach to starting their business. While most companies think of ways they can make money and a desired product, and charities think of ways to help people, Tegu does both. When Chris and Will Haughey, the founders of Tegu, were starting their business they began by asking the question “Could we create a for-profit company based in Honduras that would foster a positive social impact through its business?” They began by finding an issue, framing it, and working from there. The issue was not the lack of an innovative magnetic building blocks however. The issue the brothers discovered was 30% unemployment in a struggling economy in South America.

Tegu could have built their thriving company in America, closer to friends, family, and their primary market, but that was not their mission. The factory in Honduras is self-sustaining and employs otherwise jobless Hondurans giving them the chance to make a living and earn promotions. Tegu discovered a new way of charity combined with business and they are thriving. They were the first of their kind, making them the best of their kind, and they are proving it.

That night his whole family designed their own with markers and elastic. As time went on, friends began to ask about them and an interest for them became apparent.
