Coffee Joulies

Ever burned your tongue on a fresh cup of hot coffee?  How about refilling your coffee cup after it gets too lukewarm and cold to enjoy? In March of 2009, two Dave’s who grew up as neighbors and classmates in New Jersey came up with a solution to the hot drink problem.

Coffee Joulies are metal coffee bean-shaped beans that contain the thermodynamic ability to create the optimal temperature for hot drinks. Inside the beans are a special phase-change material which melts at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Once put in your coffee cup, the material starts to melt, which in turn absorbs an incredible amount of heat and cools your coffee down extremely fast. The heat is stored in the Joulie beans and then when the coffee reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit (the perfect temperature), the heat is released back into the coffee to keep it at the optimal temperature for drinking.

This keeps your coffee hot 3 times as long, and cools it down very fast. The beans are made in the US from 85% of recycled stainless steel using hydro power from Niagara Falls.

The business began on Kickstarter, earned 3rd place in the Kickstarter hall of fame for raising enough funds to make Joulies in the US. In 2013, Joulies profits and publicity skyrocketed when their product aired on the show Shark Tank.

My family owns multiple Joulies, and I can personally attest that this product works and is a viable solution to an ongoing inconvenience. For more information, you can check out http://www.joulies.com/

Edge

Ed Hardy and Kit Logan are prime examples of millennial entrepreneurs. At ages 16 and 17 they have created and developed a steady revenue stream based off of an app called “Edge.” This app is targeted towards skiers and snowboarders alike looking for what lift lines are busiest, how far and fast they are going, and the ability to compare speeds with others. This application is connected with Facebook and FourSquare, location based media tools, so skiers and snowboarders can connect with other users.

With this new technology, skiers and boarders can search which slopes are busiest, which lifts are backed up, and also what restaurants are locally available. Lift operators have said that this will aid them in being more efficient as they can use the GPS technology to track lift lines and slope traffic.

As an avid skier myself, I love the idea of being able to forecast which ski runs I should avoid while tracking my speeds and racing my brothers.

Hardy and Logan’s app has already launched in Apple’s app store and has attracted many investors, giving the company plenty of venture capital. Logan stated, “Once we have built enough users, the aim is to become the Waze of skiing.” These young entrepreneurs have clearly established themselves in the ski and snowboard market and are well on their way to entrepreneurial success.

The Empowerment Plan

Veronika Scott is a social entrepreneur at her core. While living in Detroit, she realized the astounding number of the population who were homeless. Roughly 20,000 people are homeless and living on the streets of Detroit currently. She began to recognize that many homeless shelters are overwhelmed and many are turned away. She thought to herself, “What can I do?”

Introducing: The Empowerment Plan. A humanitarian project which manufactures coats which are able to transform into sleeping bags, and hires homeless women as the seamstresses who build these coats. The coat is self-heated and waterproof, and the latest version has air-resistant polyethylene on the outer layer which acts as a barrier. The inside of the coat has a Thinsulate and Steelcase fabric to store a person’s body heat. This coat won an International Design Excellence Award from the Industrial Designers Society of America in 2011.

Ms. Scott said, “For revenue, I want to sell them online to individuals who can afford to buy them. Anyone purchasing the coat will automatically be given a second one that can be sent to various shelters and charities anywhere in the world.”

Her mission is to aid in rebuilding the lives of these people trapped in the cycle of homelessness and bring hope to a desolate area of Michigan. She possesses the drive to implement and continue to build this business on the basis of a nonprofit mission. Her passion to serve this often overlooked community is inspiring and encouraging.

TOK Project

“The fact that these girls were being trafficked set in as I realized this was not the type of entertainment we’d signed up for. I was shaken to the core by the dead look of despair in the young girls’ eyes, but from that moment of pain came hope and resolution: something must be done.”

Micah List said this about an experience he encountered in Bankok. Founder of a new start-up by the name of “TOK Project”, Micah has become an inspirational example of combining personal passion for business with a passion to serve those God calls his servants to love. TOK project originated with hats but has since shifted towards unique men’s ties and bow ties for any and all occasions. Custom bowties, regular ties, or pocket squares can also be ordered. This company has two locations: one in Detroit, Michigan, and the other in Pittsburgh.

With a motto of “Do your Part”, TOK Project incorporates its foundational values through donating 25% of all profits to aid against the fight of sex trafficking in Riga, Latvia. People are sent to build healing relationships with the trafficked girls, educate orphanages and schools about trafficking, raise awareness, and the other in Pittsburgh. and even challenge the men taking advantage of these young women. TOK’s desire is to mobilize a young generation to end human trafficking.

Micah and the TOK Project represent true innovation. He shifted a paradigm by putting together fashion and social justice: a revolutionary and impactful blend. The company seems to target more fashion-oriented young men, but also those who desire to take part in the fight against human trafficking. There are very few companies specifically focused on making unique ties and bowties for men, which differentiates the TOK Project immensely. In addition, the drive of Micah and his team to aid in the social good as well as looking good is fundamental in any startup. BeachMint

Founded in 2010, BeachMint transformed the retail industry. Diego Bardakin and Josh Berman understood how to frame the unique problem of a lack of stylist options in retail and combined that issue with celebrity appeal.

BeachMint allows users to get personal recommendations for BeachMint’s exclusive merchandise. Merchandise within BeachMint include t-shirts, jewelry, skincare, and shoes. Each type of merchandise section relies on a celebrity designer. Some people connected presently with BeachMint include Kate Bosworth, the Olsen twins, Jessica Simpson, and Justin Timberlake. Users can go onto BeachMint’s website, and have a personal e-commerce shopping experience with celebrity endorsement.

These two young entrepreneurs realized the trick to creating a novel approach in the social commerce approach. What is very interesting and inspiring about these two is that they actually have no expertise in fashion or jewelry. By creating an extremely fresh and compelling website with a current twist of celebrity lines within the fashion industry, BeachMints skyrocketed. Bardakin and Berman raised more than $75 million in venture capital from only owning their company 4 years.

In the entrepreneurial field, it is critical to find out what people want, and give it to them. As simple as that. Berdakin and Berman recognized a problem and need in a niche retail industry, and became passionate about their solution. Their success does not define them, though. Their creativity and drive is what is inspiring and admirable for any young entrepreneur.

The Brilliant Entrepreneur

After studying hotel management at Penn State, and then beginning a hotel referral service, Neil Goldman initiated a brilliant concept into his business. From owning a broker management hotel service taking overflow business from local Austin hotels in 2008, Goldman began asking his hotel partners to donate $1 per every overnight hotel reservation to aid different children’s charities.  In 2010 this change was made, and matching the $1, “Hotels for Hope” donates $2 to a different children’s charity each time an overnight reservation occurs at any of the 1,000+ hotels Goldman is partnered with.

A Simple Act can Change the Worldimage

This simple concept is ingenious because it encourages people that there is a way to change the world through the simple, very common, act of booking a hotel room. The business model is unique because the people booking rooms are charged nothing. Hotels for Hope handles all aspects of booking the hotels, and out of those profits, donates to charities of choice including “Rock for Kids”, “A Glimmer of Hope Foundation”, “Live Strong Foundation”, “Special Olympics Texas”, and many others.

Hotels for Hope is a for-profit business making a significant social change in the lives of kids through a simple act. Everyday people are so drawn to this business idea because it is proving that having a social impact in the world is tangible. Over 90,000+ nights have been booked through Hotels for Hope, and more than $185,000 has been donated to children’s charities. The company foresees total donations to exceed $1 million dollars by the end of 2015.

Child_with_LIVESTRONG_sticker_700x400An Inspiration to All

Personally, I see Goldman as a truly   inspiring entrepreneur because of his unique social change twist in his business. I appreciate Goldman’s innovate thought-process in his ability to apply a world influence in a competitive industry. The nature of his business exemplifies the fact that he recognized and evaluated his position in the hotel industry with a new perspective, and then took action. Not only is his thought process and ingenuity commendable, but inspiring through his desire to use his hotel management skills to change children’s lives through these foundations. Neil Goldman is the type of business leader I desire to become and aspire to, and I truly admire and respect his passion to serve others while owning a for-profit company.
