In a world where environmental issues are at the forefront of global concerns, one young boy’s passion for recycling is creating waves of change. Meet Ryan Hickman, a 13-year-old from Orange County, California, whose journey into recycling began at the tender age of three. What started as a small initiative has grown into a movement in southern California

In 2012, Ryan accompanied his dad to a local recycling center, where he experienced turning recyclables into cash. This simple visit ignited a spark in Ryan. The very next day, he decided to distribute empty plastic bags to his neighbors, encouraging them to save their recyclables for him. Little did he know that this small act would set the stage for a remarkable journey.

Today, Ryan’s Recycling Company has customers all over Orange County, California. His mission is clear: prevent recyclable containers from reaching landfills, gutters, and the ocean. Every week, Ryan dedicates time to sorting through cans and bottles collected from his customers, preparing them for a trip to the recycling center.

In 2016, Ryan’s story went viral, capturing the attention of web platforms, television, and radio stations worldwide. He has been featured on prestigious shows like Ellen, Little Big Shots, and The Pickler & Ben Show. In 2021, he founded his nonprofit organization, Project3R, with a mission to educate and emphasize the importance of recycling to children and adults worldwide. Scents to Cents – Hart Main

Hart Main

At the age of 13, Hart Main embarked on a unique entrepreneurial journey by founding ManCans, a candle company with a distinctive twist – crafting “manly” scents and packaging them in recycled soup cans. What started as a playful comment about the “girly” scents of candles his sister was selling for a school fundraiser turned into a thriving business venture that went far beyond his initial goal.

Hart’s initial motivation was to purchase a high-quality racing bike priced at $1,200. His parents encouraged him to fund the purchase himself, setting the stage for the creation of ManCans. The idea of masculine-scented candles was resurrected by Hart’s mother, Amy, and he used his $100 in savings to acquire supplies and a starter kit for candle making. The Main family’s kitchen became the candle-making laboratory, and from November 2010 to spring 2011, they produced their first 20,000 candles in-house.

“My goal was to buy the bike, then be done with it.”

But Hart had stumbled upon something that was bigger than the $1,200 bike. The early stage of the business was undoubtedly challenging. The kitchen was filled with piles of cans and candles, and the family’s living space transformed into a makeshift production facility. To source their containers, they began eating canned soup. As the candle production grew, they recruited friends and neighbors to help empty the cans, and soon they had the idea to donate the surplus soup to food banks. This act of giving was the birth of ManCans’ philanthropic mission.

In 2011, the Main family donated 200 cans of soup to a local soup kitchen, expecting the empty cans to last around five months. Their story garnered the attention of a Columbus news station, and soon, the Associated Press picked it up. This unexpected media coverage resulted in an overwhelming surge of orders for 4,800 candles from 1,600 customers. The family’s kitchen was no longer sufficient for their growing business, and they rented warehouse space and hired about five employees to help meet the demand. In January 2014, ManCans partnered with Beaver Creek Candle Co. in Lisbon, Ohio, for manufacturing and distribution, a partnership that continues to this day.

Not content with only catering to the male market, Hart expanded his business by launching SheCans, a candle line with scents targeting women. Both ManCans and SheCans candles are manufactured by Beaver Creek Candle Co. However, instead of donating soup, ManCans now contributes 75 cents from every candle sale to support soup kitchens in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan, recognizing that cash donations are often more valuable than food.

The Main family is directly involved in the creation of many of their candle scents, although some are suggested by customers. Notable scents include Fresh Cut Grass, Campfire, Bacon, Sawdust, Grandpa’s Pipe, and even Two-Stroke Engine. Perfumists in New Jersey work on scent development, mixing chemicals and sending samples to Hart until the aroma is perfected.

ManCans candles are now available in numerous locations across the United States, including McDonald Niklaus Framing in Dover and Kames Sports in North Canton. They can also be purchased online through the ManCans website. The success of ManCans not only supports the business but also helps feed the hungry and encourages young people to explore entrepreneurship at an early age.

To further his mission of promoting entrepreneurship among young people, Hart and his father, Craig, co-authored the book “One Candle, One Meal.” Each chapter of the book incorporates valuable business lessons Hart learned throughout his journey. Their aim is to inspire and educate the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Hart Main’s achievements are not limited to the candle business. Despite his early success, he has aspirations beyond the world of candles. Hart plans to attend Kent State University to major in economics with the goal of becoming a sports agent. His story exemplifies how a casual idea can evolve into a thriving business with a philanthropic mission, all while inspiring young entrepreneurs and giving back to the community. It’s a testament to the power of determination, innovation, and the willingness to seize unexpected opportunities.

Hiring better with Hyred

Profile photo of Ida Johansson

Ida Johannson is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and founder, passionate about people, leadership, machine learning and Gen Z products. At 18, she dropped out of high school and founded her first company, Hyred, a platform within HR tech that used machine learning to improve decision-making in recruitment. The company was acquired in June 2023. She built the company for 5 years, entirely bootstrapped, and expanded the business to four countries and to a team of 50 people. As a self-taught software developer, her expertise lies in combining technology and product innovation with a Generation Z mindset.

What began as Turn in 2019 became Hyred in 2022.

I started Turn Consulting on my eighteenth birthday in 2019 and right then and there we knew very little about what kind of platform we were building. What I did know was that we were going to turn the recruiting industry upside down (hence Turn). Today, almost two years later, we know more about our position in the market and it is time for a new solid foundation to stand on for our brand.

Hyred is an online platform that connects youths with part-time job opportunities based on their skills, availability, and location. It offers an internal payment system for security and convenience. Users can build their skills through various part-time jobs, and these skills are recorded on their Hyree Card. This platform empowers youths to choose how and where they work while gaining valuable work skills. Employers can also join to post part-time job listings for free and efficiently find suitable candidates. Hyred aims to help businesses reduce costs and find quality workers by tapping into a nationwide pool of skilled young talent. This allows users to gain skill badges and achieve financial and professional independence in the digital era.

Ida is based in Stockholm, Sweden. With her business, she’s not only trying to help businesses be more effective in their hiring process but also helping students and young adults get recognized by companies. In our highly competitive business world, it is often difficult to break into the workspaces. Her innovative company is helping students get part-time jobs and is changing the hiring process for the better.

CodeSandBox

A Unified CodeSandbox Experience

Bas Buursma

Meet Bas Buursma, the powerhouse at CodeSandbox, where he not only co-founded the company but also holds the impressive titles of Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Board Member.

But Bas’s journey to CodeSandbox is not your run-of-the-mill story. Before diving into the world of web development wizardry, he served as the Commissioner of Internal and External Affairs at v.v. Drienerlo. He was the mastermind behind the thrilling internal and external competitions, all while juggling the sponsor, promotion, and website committees within the football association.

Bas Buursma’s educational journey is equally fascinating. He started with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Twente, and then he kicked it up a notch with a VWO in NT (Natural Sciences), complete with a side of Management & Organization and Research & Design at Dr. Nassau College Quintus.

CodeSandbox is a smarter way to share code. After high school Bas worked at Catawiki and his co-workers shared code using Slack which while effective,  could often be slow and tedious. After this revelation, he began to build CodeSandbox. Imagine not having to deal with the hassle of saving code on your local machine or wrestling with GitHub just to share your work. His solution to code involved link-coded sharing.

“If you’re just going to troubleshoot some code, you don’t want to wait for anything to download or install, you just need to open it,”

Bas, alongside his co-founder Ives van Hoorne, dreamed up a platform that’s a game-changer. It boasts an online code editor and a nifty prototyping tool, all accessible in your web browser. They’ve crafted virtual sandboxes where coding dreams come to life, and you can effortlessly share your creations with colleagues.

Bas used his abilities as a storyteller to gain partnerships one of which was Kleiner Perkins. Bas and Ives received a call from a partner at Kleiner Perkins one evening, and that call marked the beginning of their journey. Following a trip to San Francisco in early 2019, CodeSandbox successfully raised a Seed round of $2.4 million, which enabled them to expand their team and grow the company.

And to wrap it all up, at CodeSandbox, Bas has his trusty allies. Tamás Szumori, the Data Analyst, and Oskar van Eeden, the Head of Business Operations, are right there in his corner, reporting directly to him. Together, they’re making the magic happen in the world of web development.
