After watching a Michael J. Fox Foundation video, Erin Smith began to wonder about Parkinson’s disease. She saw that the facial expressions of patients were different and thought that it could have some sort of medical significance. She did tons of research before finally creating FacePrint. FacePrint is a tool that can be used to diagnose or monitor Parkinson’s disease by using facial indicators. It only needs a webcam and a computer. It is inexpensive and can detect the disease within milliseconds. It has similar facial recognition to Facebook and snapchat. Erin once stated that FacePrint “Is the selfie that could save your life”. It is about 88% accurate and is continuously getting better with more improvements. FacePrint has been featured in large magazines like Fortune, NPR, and Forbes. She has also won several awards for her invention. Currently Erin is working with Michael J. Fox Foundation on a study and to continue research.
